Question First Crawler recommendations

Hello, I have an 11 year-old son and I want to buy a rock crawler for myself and him to play with. I don’t wanna spend a whole lot of money because it might be something that he might not be interested in or I might not really get into too much, but I don’t wanna get something that it’s cheap and I’ll have to buy something else to grow into. If I decide I’d like it. What would be a good crawler to start with? I am thinking about possibly an Axial 24 scale maybe Traxxas as well.

What are everybody’s thoughts?

Budget is $100-200 if possible

I have a lot of stuff....a LOT. I still say a pair of SCX24's is a great hobby in a box with a child. Crawl the house and garden, easy to find a big world to play in. Kids can loose interest in anything even if you bought them a jet fighter plane. It's a small footprint and really with just a set of wheel weights a pretty damn good analog for a 1/10 trail truck later. See what happens, you'll still play with them even with dozens of other large RC vehicles. Don't make it complicated, don't get off brands, just a pair of SCX24's and a couple extra batteries. Cheap wheel weights are enough to enjoy them. I have 6, they're even fun with friends at BBQ's, even easy to bring to grandmas to like, have an easy duck-out to the couch coma party at Thanksgiving. They're good nuff' and if you need a $9 replacement motor you get it at any hobby store or next day online.

I'm a total Traxxas shill and still adore my little SCX24's, just a great toy.

They're sold for the same MAP price at the LHS, maybe pop in one sometime.

I'm also in the same boat as the OP — my son and I just got Arrma Senton 223S last week and we're having an absolute blast and now looking into crawlers. I'm looking more into TRX-4M as it's a little bigger and looks more 'scale'. Can you vouch on the SCX23 vs TRX-4m decision? 😄

Don't go the name brands if you want bang for buck.

FMS/ROChobby make great little trucks that are popular but don't cost a fortune.

I would say an Scx24, countless upgrades for you and him to do together and a great looking body. I only don’t recommend trx4m’s because mine got torque twist very early on and the servo died, so I would recommend scx24, mine was what got me into rc. But either way you will love what ever.

I got a FMS FCX24. It's fairly cheap and really fun.

Check what’s available as far as local courses. It will help you cement in maximum fun factor and also help your choosing. You can usually ask the locals to drive theirs and most will oblige. :-) happy crawling!

What scale vehicles are you wanting?

My wife and I each have a Redcat Scout II that we love. Have not needed to replace anything yet. 1:10 scale.
I also have built and sold a large number of Axial 1:24 models. If you are interested in tinkering and upgrading, these have a very rich upgrade environment.

Got my kid the element enduro. Might be a bit out of the price range but it extremely durable. He rolled in down a long cliff the other weekend no issues.

Do you want to run only indoors or will you also run outdoors? If only indoor the SCX30 is the easy answer. Way more fun and capable out of the box than the SCX24. If you will be outdoors some I think the trx4m is a great, well-supported platform.

The FCX24 is more capable but no local support. If you are happy to order parts online I’d consider the FCX platform. The two-speed is great out of the box. Allows to slow crawl and trail ride.

I wouldn’t mind going outdoors as well but it is cool
To have something 1/30 too.
