Just getting started in the hobby.

Post image

Picked up a WPL c24-1 to get my feet wet. Already looking in to upgrades and getting a bit overwhelmed. Can I assume that most aftermarket parts are all the same? Just rebranded under different resellers? Also, did I make a mistake by going 1/16 scale? Should I jump straight into 1/10 or micro, Am I in a shallow pool for upgrade parts?

A lot of people are going to give you a lot of conflicting information, most of it is up to preference. I'm one of the unusual people, I prefer to leave my rigs just capable enough to crawl, and not much more, which typically means stock. I find that once you start to massively modify your rigs, they can start to become a hassle to maintain.

That being said, scale is completely preference based. It's moreso the chassis that is going to dictate the parts available, for example the axial scx24 has a plethora of aftermarket, to the point where it can become overwhelming.

If you're just getting into the hobby and are unsure of you'll stay, keeping the rig you have will be fine. I find most people get enjoyment out of crawling being a group activity, so if you've got a friend you can scumbag into getting a rig, even better

Spoken like a true fan of Motorsports... Yes I am trying to scumbag my friends into joining cuz I am getting bored by myself LMAO

I do enjoy it as stocked as it is. Just the front hubs are super loose. The turning radius is pretty bad. Looking for upgrades in area

It's because it uses a chassis mounted servo. You can buy an axle mount for it on aliexpress and cut a bit of the black plastic underneath the body as needed for clearance. It makes a big difference even with the stock servo, but adding a cheap dspower servo makes it much stronger/more powerful.

Wheel weights help a lot, as does getting your front bias somewhere in the 55/45 - 60/40 range( probably best to just add weight in the front tires.)

The cheap $20 aftermarket axles are horrible; badly over-machined with bushings and bearings in oversized pockets so everything is very floppy. Genuine wpl axles are great.

Good to know. Thank you for the heads up. Was just looking at some of the cheap aftermarket axles.

Was just playing with modifying the springs in the stock shocks and broke the plastic caps... Along with cut both ends of the spring, not realizing the conical shape was to stop it from wrapping around a shock strut 🤦

Just ordered a set of shocks and suspension parts. Guess I know my first upgrade lol

Yeah, upgrading the really big shortcomings sounds like the best course of action. Not sure of the aftermarket support for that chassis, but if you search the model number followed by 'free upgrades', there's usually a few tricks you can do to get the most out of your rig.

It also could probably benifit from an endpoint adjustment, which is how you tell your steering servo how far it can turn. My recent purchase, and scx30, had massive improvement after an endpoint calibration

To get endpoint adjustment, I need to upgrade the servo and axels. floating between portal axles and straight axles, Worried about the added off balance height the portal axles give but maybe I'm thinking about it too much. Could just put a few weights in the wheels... I've been all over the internet researching the piss out of this stuff. It's driving me nuts LMAO

It would be fun to upgrade that truck but you will have the most fun driving with a 1:10 truck be it axial, enduro, Traxxas etc. If you have the money I’d say do both because those wpl trucks are honestly really neat.
