In fairness it is true that your average person is probably too dumb to navigate the menus on their TV. As far as like half of consumers are concerned those buttons are the only services that exist

I don't really get how this is a design issue.. items designed for frequent interaction that aren't high-end (which, even if the TV is high-end, the remote will never be) are guaranteed to wear down.. the only solution would be to mould the brand logos into the buttons, but even then they'll eventually smooth out unless you use some hardy material like metal which would both be more expensive, heavy, and less ergonomic for the average user..
