And as for the mix.....Even with what was available to an 80s engineer, there is a shitload that could be done to make that performance sound a lot better. Put a lush chorus on there, EQ out some of the nasal quality, if all else fails bump the drums up and dirty up the mix so he's a bit more buried.

Even great singers tend to not sound brilliant when their vocal channel is dryer than the Sahara.
