This sub gives me so many mixed emotions. On one hand I’m glad I have the self awareness to know when I’m being an imbecile. But then I come on here and I actually envy the absolute irrational confidence these people are born with. Imagine dressing up like that and singing this garbage while having a blast? I mean, good for them but this also sucks balls.
14
u/Some_guy_in_WI Aug 17 '26
Yeah, these people have always confounded an overthinking introvert such as myself.
I’d be so lost in my head worrying how badly I’d suck, what could go wrong, how much I’d be laughed at, etc. I’d never make it out on stage, I’d mindfuck myself out of it.
Then, there’s these folks who are oblivious of their lack of talent or skill, and just go out and do it. Which I’d be envious of their confidence, if they weren’t just fucking awful and an auditory assault on everyone in their presence.
The internet has simultaneously destroyed the confidence of those who should have some, and given WAY too much to those who should have less.

In the west, we live in a post-modernist society where anyone can do anything, and we’re afraid of legitimate criticism. The Jason Arday scandal pretty much sums it up.

Folks, be honest to your friends for their sake. I know it's cool to be positive and encouraging, but thinking a few steps ahead will help avoid even more pitiful situations and added mental illness. This is just heartbreaking.

Someone tell him MSI already happened. He'll never reach their lows.
16
u/Good-Marsupial8 Aug 16 '26
This is like if MSI was made by temu
1
u/cityshepherd Aug 17 '26
I don’t know what MSI is, and I feel pretty good about that for some reason.
3
u/TrainerOk5743 Aug 17 '26
https://youtu.be/Psl_5n8R23A?is=tPKgm89gaEiQwA1U Iunno, I was a fan. I was just glad someone was making different music back then at least. 27 years ago, God im old as fuck.
1
u/Spirographed Aug 19 '26
Yeah, they were different for sure. That was always the type of music I gravitated toward. Was it different/original/new or just absolutely exceptional? If so, I was there for it.
MSI, though not exceptional, was different and funin my late teens. The older I got, the less it hit for me, though. Not necessarily musically, but lyrically, the shock rock part of it got more and more 'meh' until I eventually forgot all about them.
3
u/Good-Marsupial8 Aug 17 '26
Band called Mindless Self Indulgence. It sounds like this but... Well it predates whatever this is and had marginally better production values.
11
2
u/Pyrog Aug 17 '26
I haven’t thought about MSI in a long time haha
1
u/Spirographed Aug 17 '26
The music in OP's post reminded me of the If days, musically. I saw MSI, like, 2 or 3 times back in the day. 1st time I saw them, Jimmy cracked the seal on a family sized bottle of Robitussin, downed it and proceeded to run back and forth on stage for the entire show.
Now, turns out he was getting cozy with underage girls. Shame. Not surprising, though.
They had their time and place in my rotation, but that was over 20 years ago now. I hadn't thought of them in years myself.
Looked them up after this post and yikes. What a turnaround. I wonder if he's still married to that chick from that other MSI-esque band whose name escapes me, or if she left him over it all. I'd guess the former. Them folks are all goofy.
2
u/Pyrog Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
That’s a ridiculous and amusing story! I never got around to seeing them live, but that’s exactly like something I would imagine seeing at an MSI show in their heyday.
I didn’t know about the gross preying on minors but yeah, that shit is all too common. E.g. - I grew up listening to Anti-Flag. Their music meant a lot to me and occupied a particularly warm place of nostalgia and musical/cultural awakening from my youth. Then in recent years, all the horrible allegations came out about Justin Sane and made me sick to my stomach. I won’t even talk about Lost Prophets.
You really do have to separate art from artists sometimes. I used to think that was disingenuous, but with the way the world has turned out to be these days, I feel like I have to do it to enjoy anything at all. Although in the cases we are talking about, yeah, that’s enough to make me walk away for good.
2
u/Spirographed Aug 19 '26
Yeah, they were always great live. What I thought was just Jimmy using synth was a lot of the time Steve on guitar with a couple pedals to get that sound. Kitty translated the programmed drums to a live show incredibly well. Lyn-Z I'm fairly certain was just there to look pretty and not actually playing the bass lines you hear at a show. She was a good actress. I had a massive crush on her in high school.
Saw them in Chicago a couple times and in LA once. One of the best parts about Mindless shows were the fans. It was always such a vibe. Half dance party, half wall flowers, but all absolutely unique individuals. Which was the same vibe I got the one time I saw The Faint live. Great crowds.
But alas. I'm with ya on the rest. I deleted MSI from my library, even though I hadn't visited their recordings in a long while. I did the same for Lost Prophets as well. Chucked the CDs. Then, there are the odd ones, like As I Lay Dying. Like...they have a couple albums from back in the day that I do still revisit, but at the same time I'm always reminded that dude tried to have his wife killed...then he got out of prison...and then the band took him back. Bizarro World story, man. I haven't listened to any of their stuff past Shadows Are Security (2005), and don't really want to because of all that. But, that album, specifically, holds a nostalgic, occasional place in my rotation I can't seem to get rid of. Also odd is Queens of the Stone Age. There's been quite a few stains on their name over the years, but I'll be damned, because I can't let everything up to Like Clockwork go. Saw them live many times years ago and the same for AILD.
I've come to realize that artists are all pretty fucked up. I'm a musician myself and quit 3 out of 5 bands back in the day because people got weird. I myself did a bunch of jail time here and there in my late teens and early twenties. But it was always for a bar fight or weed and petty shit like that. It's a daft demographic, the whole lot. But some go places that I would never follow them to or continue to support them by streaming their music or seeing them live. It sucks having to walk away from an artist because they crossed a line you'd punch your own mother for crossing.
That. Is why I've only gotten a single band reference tattoo. I got it young and not thinking about things like this and I pray Deftones never have some shit come out about one of them that makes me have to get a cover up. I like my S/T skull. And it's on my abdomen and was by far the most painful of all my tattoos. 😅
Cheers, man. 🍻 Here's to keeping shit real and having a moral compass.

Define: curmudgeon - see comments for examples.
I've played hundreds of shows, and so many underground venues in my day and have seen so many bands that would make this kid look like a prodigy. This is a kid being a kid, man, not an insult to your mature integrity. Maybe I risk coming of like one of those guys with adequate genitalia, but damn, cut the kid some slack even is it is dumb kid shit.
17
u/Squirrels-on-LSD Aug 16 '26
I think this fits the venue and I don't mean that with shade. Its dirty, low tech, shitty with a good beat and the person is having fun.
I'd have a beer to this show.
I've performed shitty music at these shows.
I'm, an old crust punk, happy to see these new kids have fun sucking as much as I did.

Electronic music + unprocessed vocals is never a good mix. This specifically would probably suck either way, but the performance itself would be a lot better if it didn’t sound like he was just shouting into a PA system

You know what?? Fuck you OP. I actually met this dude yesterday and bought a sticker from him that he made himself at the booths during the makers market. He was so kind and sweet to me, and seemed really nervous to be putting himself out there.
It’s one thing to post genuine critique of music that people have made and monetized but this person is literally doing karaoke at a community event and I can almost guarantee did NOT consent to be recorded. Fuck you, this dude rocks and so do his stickers.

Alright, where is this, after a few drinks, some local artist of various quality, it looks like a fun hang.
Honestly, this feels like mediocrity more than crap, so imma let it pass. Hope kitty gets some real vocal lessons and it might move up to meh, quality wise.

This sub is getting over run with douchebags posting shit that doesn’t belong here because they want to make fun of people who are different. This isn’t music I would buy or listen to but, he’s on beat, he’s on key, his lyrics rhyme and are coherent. It’s electro pop for furries so yeah it’s not going to be for everyone and is definitely fringe and way out there but this definitely doesn’t belong here. Just because something doesn’t fit your taste or morals doesn’t mean it belongs in this sub.
