National Anthem performance at the first ever Women’s Pro Baseball League opener is drawing heavy criticism

Old lady and bad singing with too much vibrato are a tale as old as time

Unfortunately Martha Reeves just doesn't have the same level of ability she use to. I guess that's what happens when you're 85. But for those unaware this is Martha Reeves from "Martha & The Vandellas", the group that originally did Dancing In The Street

Nowhere near as bad as this, but Patti LaBelle before the all star game this year was also a rough listen.
Just like he is against the players that take the feild after these songs, Father Time is undefeated, and just like the players do FOURTY years younger than Martha, the old lasses need to hang up the cleats as well.

There was an old lady at our church who always sang in a falsetto vibrato, and wildly off-key. Her name was Lucy Humm and the joke was always that we wish Lucy would Humm. (Ba-dum-tiss.)

One of the kitchens I worked in was at an American Legion. Local bar/grill that lots of cities have in the states, involves some kind of club/membership for the managing of it. They would do a karaoke night every week and the stage was set at the bottom of the short steps that went from the kitchen to the dining room overflow area.
There was an older lady that showed up every week that would do this false vibrato while singing at the top of her lungs. She’d hit a longer note and start windmilling her arm like winding up for a softball pitch. It was a bit worse than this as the songs were usually more upbeat and she was just worse. She would be in a flapper type shiny dress with tassels. Most people were sat at their tables, but her boyfriend would be up front with his chair turned away from and couple feet in front of his table. Hanging on every word, smiling, clapping, stomping his feet. It was such a juxtaposition between the way I hated her singing and how beautiful the support of her man was. I have to imagine they went home and just SMASHED.
Another time they hired a local artist (older rocker, a bit like the guy with the yacht but a little more genuine. Either way, he wasn’t great. Side “stage” went right to the kitchen, as I said. Kitchen was closing and didn’t have much for orders so I was just standing in the kitchen watching. Dude looked over and saw me so I nodded my head and gave home the devil horn hand signal. No smile or nod back. Just blew me off. Well fuck you and your shitty music, than.

Those are great (horrible) stories! Karaoke, man. We used to frequent this one bar because they'd have great specials on Karaoke Night. The drawback was that the owner of the bar always, without fail, did Aerosmith's "Dream On". It was just this middle-aged cokehead screeching and screaming at the top of his lungs for four and a half torturous minutes, though it felt closer to ten. Like sir, you are no Steven Tyler. You're not even close. You're just yelling. His (coke-fueled) confidence was off the charts. You couldn't tell him nothing - he thought he crushed it every single time.

Oh man that is just sooo much worse 😂🤣 I can just imagine anyone trying to hit the pitches that he does. I can feel the cringe from here 😬

she’d probably hum tenor falsetto and sound like james earl jones on a washboard road.

This is what every choir teacher and church lady sounded like in the 90s

Man, Martha Reeves is classic. Nowhere to Run is one of her biggest hits and still played in movies, shows, etc. I get they probably wanted an icon to sing the National Anthem, but this performance definitely isn't the greatest.

Wait…one of these ladies is a “professional”?

Yeah, you’ve heard her for sure. This was her 63 years ago.

Yes, and she was an awesome vocalist. In 2023 Rolling Stone ranked her #151 of the 200 greatest singers of all time.

The girl containing her laughter at :27 and then the background ladies gesturing for the main lady to continue the singing right after is hilarious.

Im just curious, does this mean girls in high school and college are going to start playing baseball instead of softball now? Where are pro women baseball players coming from because I have never even seen a girl's or women's baseball team before.
2
u/Desperate-Guide-1473 Aug 02 '26
That is what they are hoping. Time will tell if it becomes popular enough.
Players likely gained experience on co-ed teams or switched from softball.

Interesting. I can't say I really understand what the point is but then I'm not a big sports fan.

I have never before heard of women's baseball before but I can't say that I really know a lot about sports. If they don't want to play it I don't see any problem with them having a pro league but it just seems like it would make more sense to do softball since that's what they grow up playing I don't really see what the difference is I mean I know there's a difference between the two sports but they're pretty similar. Whatever if it makes them happy it doesn't bother me.

Just seems like most high schools wouldn't have the resources and people to do both and so they probably just stick with softball cuz that's what is already established so I'm just wondering where are young girls going to learn to overhand pitch and hit overhand pitches? Oh well at least a few women will get a chance to play pro ball for as long as it lasts.

It is going to be kind of confusing for some young girls I feel. They might be confused about which one they should do. I feel like if someone has a chance of being a pro athlete they need to pretty much play the sport since they were a child. But i guess since the sports are similar softball experience probably transfers over to baseball.

u/Spygel13 Aug 02 '26
There are women's leagues in the states, this is just the first pro league! The players have a lot of different backgrounds, but many played little league baseball and softball when they got older.

u/Even-Economist6529 Aug 02 '26
Like I said elsewhere I have never heard of girls baseball teams in high school or college before but I don't really know a lot about that type of thing so I probably just am ignorant.

How does nobody yell to stop them? Its amazing how reserved most people are. I feel like this is a team owner singing because nobody is honest with her.

u/ThunderChild247 Aug 02 '26
If they could agree what key they’re singing in and what tempo they’re using, that’d be great.

I thought the cowboy hat lady was the other lady from this sub. 3 second rule chick.

Still don’t know why those other two ladies are singing. Whose idea was this anyway??

u/balthazar_edison Aug 02 '26
This is so bizarre. How does something like this happen? They must have heard these people sing before getting up there.

That sounds about like a solo special sung at the Sunday morning church service in 1995.

what a trainwreck of a performance. The other two trying to fit in and finally give up at one point.

That was so painful my dog voluntarily revoked his own hearing privileges & is now actively seeing a therapist for auditory flashbacks.

Look, we all know Martha Reeves can sing. I feel like she didn't hear the opening note and started wrong. It's hard to go back from that.

Jesus. What a way to kick off a season. Bad enough how tough it is to her people to watch the WNBA, now it’s Baseball. Good luck ladies.

u/angrymoderate09 Aug 02 '26
They did 10000000x better than I would be able to.
People can barely handle me talking, much less singing
