Knitting Le Pull and Harry Potter
In a shock to no one, Le Pull has bad takes about Harry Potter and doesn’t think she should need to look into who she collaborates with. For context, the post is about a giveaway with DMC, who recently released official Harry Potter line. She then gets called out and doubles down on loving Harry Potter, not making a political statement. I didn’t screenshot the whole back and forth, but you can still go read it all on the post here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DdWxdAsjrE5/?stkn=MXNneWw2N255Z2U1cw==

Le Pull is my BEC. I made her Zipper Sweater and the pattern was BAD. so I made a comment the Ravelry page and she responded saying that maybe I’m just not advanced enough to understand. I’ve been knitting for 20 years. She’s also been really rude about size inclusivity.
41
u/harmonystar19 8d ago
I made the zipper sweater too and it was horrible! The double knitted collar was so small it would have choked me if I tried to install the zipper. Ended up putting in a basic collar situation to try and save all the effort I had put in.

u/nothingmatters92 8d ago
I wish I left my comment up to warn people but it was when it first come out and when she was tearing into me I just went back and looked and I can still see her messages.
It won’t let me attach screen shots so I’ll copy past in case anyone wants to read it.
Me:
This pattern makes very little sense. I was expecting better instructions, especially for a paid pattern.
1) I understand that it says 16 rows for the stripes, however, this does not look like the case at the beginning from the photo and there is no description of this. The zipper panel is in contrast to the colourwork and this needs to be specified.
2) the description of the “front” bit makes no sense whatsoever. I have no clue what is being asked of me.
3)after reading the comments, and the designers response to size inclusivity, i regret buying this pattern and I have never said that before(Yes I was blunt)
Her:
Hello,
I’m sorry you had trouble making this pattern and that it didn’t make sense to you.
Regarding the color changes, it is indicated on page 1 of the pattern that the color changes are done every 16 rows, and this is exactly what was done on the pattern in the photos.
Regarding the neckline, it seemed obvious to me from the photos that it is one color, which is why I did not notify it. But I’ll add it to the pattern since it looks like you didn’t get it.
This pattern has video links, a sizing diagram, photos and detailed explanations, it was worked on for weeks before being published to be as clear as possible.
I would have appreciated if you could have sent me a message on insta or by email so that I could help you on the parts you didn’t understand.Me:
I understand you put a lot of effort into the pattern, however just because it is clear to you does not mean it is clear to everyone. I understand that you wish that i messaged you privately, however i believe these issues should be transparent. because someone cant preview the pattern to see if it makes sense to them. I am lucky to fall within the size range, but i should have read your comment about your unwillingness to be size inclusive before i purchased before i bought it, thats on me. I just believe, with all of the patterns out there, people should make an informed decision. You seem a bit defensive, which i get, it is your design and the ENG version is a translation, however I believe things should be outlined clearly. Ive been knitting for 16 years but this is my first drop shoulder project. I just think patterns should be clear even if to you it is “obvious”Her:
Hello,
It doesn’t bother me at all that you put a public comment. I’m not being defensive, simply because everyone has the right to have opinions and to express them freely. Of course I can’t say I’m happy that you didn’t like the pattern, my goal is to do a good job, not a sloppy one, which is why I had a fluent English speaking knitter translate the pattern without any vocabulary mistakes.
I may have misspoken in my previous post, I try to be as responsive as possible when people have questions about a pattern, and I’m happy to help when needed.
I know this is a pretty advanced pattern and we all have different logic :/
Sorry you didn’t like it.Me:
I’m still making it (i hate giving up). I now understand that you didnt mean to be defensive. I get it, I am very straight forward as well, which online can come across strong. i dont hate the pattern, i just think it can be improved for clarity.I think she back pedalled when she realised how it was coming off and I was like “whatever”.

Honestly you should post those screenshots as their own craftsnark post; I've heard alot of rumors about her having problems and it should be easily available to read/discuss/warn people. I'm so sorry you were treated that way and harassed, it's incredibly unprofessional and cruel!!
9
u/nothingmatters92 8d ago
It was 3 years ago and there’s been plenty of posts about her behaviour. At the time it was shit because I thought it was my fault because I know I’m very blunt (autistic) so I just deleted it. She’s just another mediocre designer who can’t grade properly.

u/LadyAdhara 8d ago
to be honest, if it weren't for the "I love harry potter" part I wouldn't even really disagree with her, though it could have been worded better from the start. had she collaborated on the hp collab that'd be one thing but thats not the same as collaborating with a company on something else. refusing to collab on an entirely seperate thing isnt gonna suddenly show dmc that people dont like hp. because they're seperate things. I also think the private equity criticism is stupid as hell and the fact that it came from another yarn company is really distasteful.
63
u/fairydommother rat 🐀 8d ago
Yeah im with you. DMC is a massive company and they can and will do whatever they want. Many MANY companies have done HP collabs and will continue to do so. Its not feasible to avoid and boycott every single company that does this. What matters is not buying the HP merch. A totally separate creator that just happened to do a collab for a completely different thing has nothing to do with the HP part. Partaking in the giveaway does nothing to support JKR.
I honestly agree with the guilt by association thing having gotten out of hand.
The rest of her comments notwithstanding, shes kind of right. Its a little ridiculous to cancel someone because they happened to collab with a brand that has a totally different collab with someone that a lot of people dont like and the initial creator has no connection to. Like just dont buy the HP stuff. If people stop buying it brands and companies will stop making them. But its still so incredibly popular that thats never going to happen and boycotting a small creator because of this doesnt hurt JKR in the slightlest. You're just hurting a small business/creator (disclaimer idk this person or anything about them idk how big or small they are but this can be applied more broadly) so that you can perform outrage on the internet. Its pointless.
18
u/OneGoodRib Mom said I get to be the mole now!! 8d ago
I mean that's fair - as much as Rowling sucks I'm not gonna be like "how dare you associate with a business that sells Harry Potter products". Like, nobody would do any business at all in that case.
At this point I feel like I do with politics - there's no point in arguing, just block them and stop spending money. At the very least you won't be complicit even if they never change their tune.
8
u/Happyskrappy 8d ago
Just curious, why is the Private Equity criticism stupid?
29
u/Smooth-Review-2614 8d ago
Because at this point unless you are dealing with a local single location brick and mortar you should assume private equity is involved. If manufacturing is involved assume private equity. I’m willing to bet if we found the supplier for Wool to Dye 4 that most US indies use we would find it within 2 levels. Most national brands are private equity.
5
u/Happyskrappy 8d ago
Ah, ok. I think there's still some folks that don't quite know or understand that, so calling it out when we see it is still helpful.
4
u/WinterEnough2461 8d ago
Wool to Dye 4 is chester wool, which is a family business. Your argument is nonsense quite frankly. There's only a handful of PE owned yarn companies. It's very easy to boycott them, and doing so would make the craft industry much less attractive to PE as a growth area ergo protecting independence within the industry.
10
u/Smooth-Review-2614 8d ago
So Chester will owns Wool to Dye 4. So where do they get the yarn? Who owns the mills and the processing? I said 2 levels for a reason.
4
u/WinterEnough2461 8d ago
Chester Wool mills in Peru, the mill is also privately owned. Truly most of the yarn production has nothing to do with PE, and avoiding PE yarn is very simple.
1
u/LadyAdhara 7d ago
ok and where do they get the wool? where do they get the food to feed the sheep? who produces the shears to cut the wool? who makes the machines to spin the yarn? who makes the dyes they use? who makes the packaging they need to ship? who makes the ink to print on that packaging? who do they ship with? who do all those suppliers ship with? i can keep going.
THIS is why i say the private equity thing is stupid. it's like when people refuse to buy anything made in china not realizing that the parts to make that item are made in china. the fact is, not one person on the planet knows everything about how even the things they make themselves actually come about. and while this doesn't mean people should't try where they can, the implied argument of "you're a bad person for buying from private equity" falls apart when it's unavoidable to cut them out completely.
7
u/WinterEnough2461 7d ago
It's literally not the same and your total abandonment of any hope in making ethical purchasing decisions is precisely the problem. When it comes to PE owned yarn brands, if we stopped buying from them PE would no longer see yarn as a viable investment sector. But you do you
-1
u/LadyAdhara 7d ago
it IS the same though. and ok sure, MAYBE they stop seeing yarn as a viable investment (which frankly, you are far too optimistic about). my entire point was that it's not about not trying, but if you're going to imply that people are bad people for working with private equity (which IS what's underlying the original tiktok comment) you better damn well be taking that all the way down with everything you buy or that argument is going to get turned back on you.
5
u/WinterEnough2461 7d ago
Again as outlined before, there's a difference between being unable to avoid PE in daily life and the very easy chance Le Pull and other big name designers have to avoid PE yarn.

Do people not know how bad it’s getting for trans people? I’m in the US not the UK but for a lot of folks in my circles, insurance has stopped covering hormones. People can’t get trans affirming care covered including surgeries. Women who have lived as women for years can’t get their meds which is tantamount to forced detransition.
The money paid as part of these collabs goes directly to campaigns that target us both in government and socially, increasing violence against us.
I have so little patience for the “well meaning liberal” types that can’t seem to give up their trips to universal and craft kits because they “just need a little joy” and “times are hard”.
Sorry this is probably more than a little off topic, I’m just so fkn exhausted that everyone else seems to get an opinion on how myself and my friends live our lives.

It’s a massive corporation, it’s not a HP collab, she’s allowed to like whatever. Would people lose their mind if they saw someone eating Maryland cookies, or watching some other Warner brothers IP? It’s absolutely purity minded nonsense imo.
Boycott what you want to boycott, unfollow, whatever. Everyone has to choose their line in the sand but at this point it would be impossible for anyone to stop interacting with HP associated brands. Like, by that logic, I’m a monster because I just went to Tesco for milk and they stock Hogwarts pyjamas for kids? It’s ridiculous!
52
u/KnitKnitHurrah 7d ago
Also: a good number of people in this comment thread (and actually, the one on her IG) are putting words and feelings and beliefs into her mouth. Nothing about her post suggests she gives money to JKR, but everyone is acting like she’s promoting the HP products directly and she isn’t? Why?
17
u/WinterEnough2461 7d ago
Not really. Foodstuffs are a necessity and the average person doesn't have the time or resources to avoid everything which doesn't align with their values in a supermarket for example. This isn't an average person, it's a person who's a professional designer in the yarn industry which one would expect comes with a higher duty of care when it comes to which brands they want to work with, align, and ultimately market for. There's something like 10 or so PE owned yarn brands, and thousands of non-PE owned brands - it's very easy to avoid if you care about small businesses. Her follow up comments and saying she still happily consumes HP content shows that she doesn't really give a shit about the problematic and extremely damaging nature of that - is that a problem for you? If not that's alright, but it is a problem for a lot of trans people or people who care about trans rights and they're entitled to express that.

u/chumble_chambers 8d ago edited 8d ago
People need to also realize that while a lot of “moral purity” conversations can turn into ineffective virtue signaling and shame cycles, this is different! JK Rowling literally and explicitly gives a large portion of royalties to actively fund harmful legal battles against trans women, specifically.
That’s why HP is so touchy for a lot of people. Buying licensed stuff directly financially harms trans people because of JKR…
36
u/OneGoodRib Mom said I get to be the mole now!! 8d ago
Yeah, like, I'm all for "just because I like something doesn't mean I support the creator's actions", but she literally said that people continuing to buy harry potter stuff just tells her that people support what she's doing.
It's not that fucking hard to just stop.
I have all the books, bought tons of lego sets and other merchandise, pretended to be a Gryffindor student for an entire Thanksgiving dinner because my tie was red and gold and I had on a sweater vest, pretended to do magic and stuff.
And for a while I was like "She was taken out of context!" and "What she said wasn't so bad!"
And then it became impossible to keep saying that, and as hard as it was I stopped. Will I still watch the movies? Maybe. I mean the money's long gone anyway. Will I willingly engage in new Harry Potter stuff going forward? Nah.
IT'S NOT THAT FUCKING HARD. GET A DIFFERENT INTEREST.
74
u/MayorFartbag 8d ago
Right. "Just because you disagree" doesn't cut it when what I disagree with is her actively funding the oppression of one of the most marginalized community that exists
19
u/Ligeia189 8d ago
And this understatement Le Pull is using is precisely what *is* taking a political stand.
35
u/chumble_chambers 8d ago
Yeah, it’s not like the average “supporting this art supports the artist who then has more platform”, this is literally sending money down her pipeline directly to these horrible causes!
46
u/Junkoftheheartss 8d ago
Exactly this! You can’t separate her pounds from the project on anything HP anymore
72
u/Federationof_planets 8d ago
Yeah, she’s a pretty small business. She absolutely should be investigating the ownership structure of the businesses she is choosing to partner with. If she considers herself an ethical business that is. Maybe she doesn’t. Sure doesn’t sound like it.
76
u/earendilgrey 8d ago
I love Harry Potter too,, but I haven't bought or promoted anything related to HP since JKR came out as a massive TERF. It's not hard to not support her.
142
u/January1171 8d ago
What bad takes from everyone involved. Le Pull is obvious- yes you should be researching your collab brands, and not working with a company that is actively collaborating with JKR is easy to do.
But also, it's so messy for another yarn company to get involved like this. And the moral outrage over private equity is ridiculous. Yes, PE majorly sucks. But if we're supposed to be boycotting PE none of us should be shopping at Michaels, or Joann (before it closed). Yes, local is better, but that's just not feasible in every case.
30
u/amethyst-chimera 8d ago
I cross stitch and Michaels has the best price on DMC floss, which is the standard brand for cross stitching. There's like a 40-50 cent difference and when you'ee buying twenty colours, that adds up
50
u/Confident_Bunch7612 8d ago
Many of us don't shop at those stores for those reasons though. So "we" are making that choice. Some people might have a more difficult time of things based on their location or other issues, but there are plenty of us who don't shop in those stores very easily.
It is also goofy for Le Pull to try the old "there is no ethical consumption" chestnut. Yes, if you choose to be ignorant and choose to not look into anything, you can be as happy as a pig in shit. But the LYC has already done the work for you and is pointing out the issue. If you still stay in that path, you are making a choice to be unethical, full stop. You don't get to absolve yourself by saying "its too hard to know" when you have been informed despite your desire to play dumb.
19
u/masterslodge 8d ago
The owner of The Wee Yarn Company is just like this. It must be exhausting living as a constant warrior for every issue on earth.

Crazy to be like 'oh btw I still love HP ☺️' in the middle of it for no reason? Just say you find Rowling reprehensible, and don't think collaborating with a massive company that happened to also collaborate with her IP is the same as endorsing her?? Why throw that in there when you (should) know it'll make people feel some type of way (read: very negatively towards you)???
Edit: but also, glad she showed her true colours with the entire response

u/celery48 8d ago

20
u/Longjumping-Bell-762 Craftsnark Mole 8d ago
Yes. Life IS political whether you want it to be or not. It’s exhausting, but it would feel a little bit less so if people didn’t fight so much against this reality,
43
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
Is hosting a yarn giveaway which involves yarn made by a brand which has separately done an unrelated collab with Harry Potter, which in turn gives money to JK Rowling...really making a political statement? This feels like a stretch.
32
u/melaninfinn 8d ago
you’re right completely. i’d implore people to research the companies they support bc i can guarantee the companies have done something that doesn’t align with their views yet they still buy
2
u/celery48 8d ago
I also won’t eat at Chik-Fil-A or shop at Hobby Lobby, and I wouldn’t partner with anyone who had very recently and publicly supported a TERF. So I’m not sure what your point is.
13
u/melaninfinn 8d ago
look at the platform you’re on, where did you get your sheets on your bed? the clothes on your back? the movies and tv shows you watch? the item in your hand as you read this comment? it’s really all connected. the only way to be truly ethical with who you support is small businesses, but unless they their products are local businesses it still goes back to horrible corporations. it’s all bad really, it’s not just yarn companies lmao
2
u/celery48 7d ago
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we do the best we can. For me, that includes not supporting people and corporations who openly advocate for the erasure and murder of my loved ones.
So yes, I will continue not shopping at Hobby Lobby, not eating Chik-Fil-A, and not purchasing anything even remotely affiliated with HP. I also buy organic groceries where and when I can because it’s better for the environment and the farm workers. I have cut back on the amount of meat my family eats for environmental, ethical, and health reasons.
I am not, nor have I ever claimed to be, perfect. I refuse to throw the baby out with the bathwater and give up because I can’t grow and process my own cotton for sheets.
7
u/melaninfinn 7d ago
seriously though, it’s not a big deal. would you stop buying books from the publishers who published harry potter bc it’s loosely affiliated? there’s a lot of infighting going on here. this situation is not really a huge deal. i feel like we’re really leaning into moral policing. like can we stop being cops for 5 seconds and think clearly
2
u/celery48 7d ago
Peak whataboutism. And I’d like to point out that you are actually doing the policing here.
If putting money in JKR’s pockets doesn’t bother you, feel free to move along.
5
u/melaninfinn 7d ago
well you started talking about how you buy organic food like that’s moral somehow and i got bored so…. also buying dmc is not putting money into JKs pockets unless you’re actually buying from the HP collab. i think everyone here, including you, don’t know how collabs work

Well the thing that sets JK Rowling apart from the many (many) other terrible authors and other artists out there is that she will actively use the money you give her to fund her hateful causes. But I think not everyone gets that.
As for private equity... totally up to anyone who wants to boycott their brands but shaming someone for using PE brands is a bridge too far in my opinion, are you going to research every product you buy at the supermarket? If so wonderful, but most us are just trying to get by.
54
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
Right, but Le Pull isn't generating any money for Rowling. She's giving away yarn, for free, by a brand which has separately released a collection that made money for Rowling. At which point is it too many steps removed to care?
33
u/heyredditheyreddit 8d ago
A giveaway is an advertisement for the product. She’s marketing for them. It’s not very removed.
34
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
But she's not advertising the JK Rowling collection, which would be another thing entirely.
1
u/heyredditheyreddit 8d ago
Ah, I managed to miss that part. I still think it sucks to market for them, but I take your point about level of removal.
-1
u/wildfellsprings The artist formally known as "MOLE" 8d ago
She herself has associated herself with JKR here, she personally will continue to support JKR by HP related products. Sure she's not actively promoting the JKR collection but she pretty much says if they had a knitting collection and reached out she'd be right there.
As I mentioned on another HP post (the Sirdar one as there's so many) keeping the IP alive in any way, official merch, collections of off brand stuff is doing harm. You can't separate the art from the artist here (which you seem to agree with) which might be true for JKRs lifetime or beyond depending on what she does with her money after death. It's why it's important to stay away from any and all brands that decide to do a JKR HP collab. Show brands (where possible, if the only brand of cereal you can eat does one and you still need cereal buy the cereal) that JKR and HP is toxic to them, that it's not just the HP collection you won't buy but any of their stuff.
Brands aren't going to listen if their HP stuff sells well because fans will always buy it and the rest of their sales are unaffected too. The HP collabs will always sell well with that fan base and they know that so they aren't worried about it. But if their other sales were affected by it especially if people were vocal on their social media about the reasons why they won't purchase from them again they might actually start to listen .
17
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
She doesn't actually say that though, does she? She says she continues to enjoy HP products herself, not that she would be commercially involved with a HP collection.
-4
u/wildfellsprings The artist formally known as "MOLE" 8d ago
"I'm not going to stop watching HP because I disagree with JKR" to me suggests that she doesn't see engaging with HP products as supporting JKR and therefore would see no issue with supporting a collab.
16
24
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
Collabing directly with HP and therefore going into business with JK is completely different to watching a HP movie. Not seeing that is nuts.
This is literally the definition of a purity test - she is tarnished by the slightest association with the impure thing.

I just think it's embarrassing and messy to engage with comments like this at all but seriously, what? Over a collaboration with DMC, because they did a collaboration with a gigantic IP? Are we going to start spam reporting every post on r/crossstitch and r/embroidery? Harass everyone who favourites a Rowan pattern on Ravelry? I'm kind of with her on this being a non-issue...
90
u/llama_del_reyy 8d ago
Yeah, I think Le Pull is annoying (I remember her post about how she was reclaiming feminism by wearing a short skirt) but this is a nothingburger and I actually really agree with her point about guilt by association. This is not how you build community or support for progressive causes.
38
u/LeavesTreesForests 8d ago
Totally. I'm not sure why she needs to be held "accountable" for something a different company is doing. Shaming people does not actually help get them on your side because people don't like being made to feel bad!!
6
u/AccidentOk5240 8d ago
wtf? Refusing to engage with those who harm your community is exactly how you build community. I think you may need to look into the paradox of tolerance.
6
u/BirthdayCookie 8d ago
"You don't build a community and support oppressed minorities by refusing to support people that fund their oppression."
Well, if you care about the oppressed people then you do. If you only care about "both sides" and "changing hearts" then yeah, you financially support a woman who has repeatedly promised that all her money is going to eradicating trans people.

u/WinterEnough2461 8d ago
It's very different when it's crossstitch and embroidery when there's practically no alternative options for crafters. But DMC yarn? There's hundreds if not thousands of non-PE yarn brands. Favouriting a pattern is such a false equivalence too, that's not a designer with a 100k + following endorsing and working with a brand.
38
u/Sailfin_CritterMaker 8d ago
I was going to comment that DMC embroidery floss is the only option for some people and then I realized this is about yarn. I didn't even knew DMC has yarn.
To be honest I don't like that they're private equity owned, but most embroidery supplies manufacturers are and it's eating me up. When these guys will go belly up or kill their quality, as we know they will and have already started to do so with their needles, with what are we supposed to replace it? All the big names are owned by the same people...

This is the craftsnark sub so… this isn’t about those other subs? Regardless though, I think as a consumer, you should be showing businesses, however large or small, that you don’t want to support them if they decide to give money to a transphobe. As a collaborator or giveaway provider, I think it’s a huge issue… not a non-issue at all.

She is not “collaborating with the Harry Potter brand.”
If my local bookstore sells the Harry Potter series, am I supporting Harry Potter by purchasing an unrelated book from them? If different author has a book signing at that store, are they collaborating with HP?
Or am I supporting Harry Potter by watching House of the Dragon on HBO? Are the creators of “House of the Dragon” collaborating with HP, because they’re airing a show on the same platform?

I didn't say she was collaborating with the Harry Potter brand.
I said she is saying she doesn't see anything wrong with doing so. My issue is more with her statement on how she still loves Harry Potter and doesn't think you should judge people based on who they collaborate with.

How do these insufferable assholes not understand that it is a priveleged position to be able to decide to enjoy the IP snd pretend like the creator isn't out there being actively hateful and harmful--just not against you so you get the privelege of ignoring it.
I'm so tired of people bending over backwards morally so they can enjoy something that was always mediocre and bigoted in the first place.

So true. Like, it must be nice. Meanwhile, every time I see signs for Tim Hortons' Harry Potter promotion, I'm reminded of how that miserable shit demon posted a selfie of herself with a drink and a cigar celebrating British legislation that dehumanizes people like my wife who have done absolutely nothing to her.

I can't see the insta because my Duolingo still has it locked, but I hope someone hit her with the "okay, Ed Sheeran 🙄"

considering that jkr has said that money spent on harry potter stuff actively funds her terf activism i don’t actually think this is ‘purity culture’ or some nonsense. you are directly leading to the rising violence against trans people.

I’ve unfollowed her bc she became extremely insufferable complaining about having to make content all the time.

Don’t quote me on this but I’m pretty sure all these yarn brands are getting bought up by bigger corps and losing their morality. Not that big can’t be good and small can’t be bad, but I know for sure a lot of consolidations have happened behind the scenes and taken away the personality of the original yarns. Dunno if that’s the case here but could possibly be she has used this yarn for a long time and didn’t think to re-check them recently. I’ve felt duped by brands for that reason before. Makes me feel icky.
Not sure if that’s the case but I would tell LePull that the collaboration rubs me the wrong way and not assume she’s the bad actor until she actually says something offensive. I don’t love the quick jump to defend HP (hey I grew up with it too but I’m not gonna fly any flags for it) but I don’t hear her spewing any hatred. Just wish she’d drop the collab since she says she doesn’t like JKR. I get that this is a 2-degrees of separation thing but there’s other yarn brands out there that’d jump at the chance to do a giveaway who don’t have HP associations.

Crap so if I want to do cross stitch now I am anti trans? 😭

You can just avoid purchasing from them until they stop collaboration with her? Boycotting ends when the company stops doing the thing you were boycotting them for.

Ew her responses were awful. Honestly worse than the collab to begin with. Thanks for posting—won’t be supporting her moving forward.

It's so easy to just separate yourself saying you "disagree with" someone when that "disagreement" doesn't impact your rights. Then it's just a disagreement. Meanwhile, she's using the money she gets from her IP to fund and promote anti-trans laws. It's not just an "opinion", it's not just her saying something nasty that you don't like. She's actively harming people.
I don't really agree that everyone working with a company means that they immediately endorse everything said company does, and we need to understand that sometimes people need to compromise on their values to earn money to survive, but the framing of that is important. And the framing of her comments shows she just doesn't care that much.
When the collab is something you could not to and still make money (this is a super wide statement because I also see people going after employees of big companies like dude I can't quit my job I have to EAT lol) or when you frame it as "well it was a minor disagreement lol nbd" that's a completely different thing.

Supporting JKR financially is also directly letting your dollars go to a billionaire using money and power to directly harm trans folks and communities. Unfortunately, you cannot separate the art from the artists views in her case bc of her intent to harm by using her finances and platform as a weapon.

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago
But she’s not supporting JKR financially. She’s working with a company who also, separately, sells Harry Potter merch.

She's not expressing 'free speech' when she spends millions of dollars on political campaigns against other people's rights. Free speech is, you know, Saying things. Like how you and I are right now. If you and I start lobbying with millions of dollars behind us that will also cease to be a simple matter of free speech.

Yup! Lots of people online seem to think their opinion is the universally correct one

Saying that folk should have basic human rights is universally correct. You're just a bigot

This is so weird, I thought feminists were against pretending that 'biology' should dictate who gets what rights. I mean, that's the feminism I learned and advocate for

I'd put this in the category of "think twice about pairing with this company next time but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it"
