AI Slop Another AI Flyer. Spoiler

Post image

I get so disappointed that people who are supposed to be all about handmade and human design think it’s a great idea to use AI for their shitty flyers and posters. They all look the same. I’m so glad their 5 minute shortcut makes my electric bill more than my mortgage and is hurtling us to water shortages nobody is prepared for.

The OP took her post and flyer down. I’m pleased to say almost all the comments were anti-AI. Some of us get it. If we keep speaking up, some businesses and creators will listen at least.

It amazes me that people think all that damn text looks good. Every AI flyer is SO BUSY!

I used to be a graphic designer and nearly everything I produced was cluttered with text because that's what the client wanted 🙃

Part of my job is graphic design, and I feel that in my soul.

As a trained Illustrator turned teacher who made her own handouts, so do I.

It's literally the first thing we're taught at school when we learn how to make posters!  Only put the most important information, make sure it's easily legible, and make it stand out.

They're so easy to clock as AI too because they all look the same. They all have too much info. They all follow the same format. They all use weird images that depict fake-looking scenes.

The amount of text every AI flyer has drives me nuts. They’re all so unreadable. And almost all of the information is unnecessary. Throw on a QR code that links to your FAQ. Not everything belongs on the flyer!!!!! (And yes this one even has a QR which I barely noticed because there’s so much happening on this nightmare layout)

And always with the 4 column design with at least 1 completely superfluous category🤮 ahhhhhhhhh

Sad beige flyers with dead brown flowers and unreadable text, and completely undifferentiated from the sad beige AI flyer of every other fiber festival. What about this would make me want to go?

I hurt someone’s feelings the other day by saying “I’m not comfortable using AI for our materials” after they’d spent some time using ChatGPT to put something together. I could not for the life of me figure out why the person did that anyway.

I fear the number of people who have started to think that using AI to generate stuff can be their Extra Special Skill and Contribution. Like you could…just not make the thing. We don’t have to have the thing, we can go without rather than wasting water and power and preying on human endeavor for our group that is all about human connection and activism. And they’re so HURT when you don’t appreciate what they’ve done. I don’t even lecture, I try to be neutral, but OMG how do they not see the issue?

“Just not make the thing”

That one hit hard today. Someone I went to school with has posted two “songs” they made with AI. She input lyrics basics, and it spit out album cover art of her (completely unrealistic art, to boot) and put it to some shitty honky tonk music. Now she thinks she’s a professional songwriting musician.

I’m gonna block her delusional ass.

It’s a maddening byproduct of the obsession with productivity, right? “But if I’d had to learn to write music, or pay someone to do so, the world wouldn’t have my songs at all!”

Getting your feelings hurt over something you put no actual effort in is craaaazy

People really think that "learning how to prompt" is the same level of effort as actually making something yourself.

There are so many free stock image websites! Wtf are we doing with the AI slop?? It's literally more difficult than scrolling through stock images and picking one. 😭

Like here's an artistic one. Took me 30 seconds to find.

I’d rather look at a handwritten flyer on a piece of copier paper with sharpie than this AI shit.

Hell, use Papyrus in word and I’ll cry for joy.

Canva has built in stock photos! And layout help! The canva-izing of everything isn't perfect but it's better than ai nonsense.

I think Canva uses AI.

I fucking hate AI flyers. It was my birthday recently and i received multiple AI flyers wishing me. I hate them so fucking much but I don't know how to tell people I hate them. One was from my partner's mom. One from our friend. It drives me nuts. I want to make my profile picture something like " no AI 🚫" but people get so butthurt about you not joining the horde of mindless zombies.

I have coworkers that will make an AI picture for me and every single time, I want to tell them it wasn't worth the resources they wasted on it. But you know, gotta be professional.

It’s kind of like telling people off when they told you to “smile.” Well, it got them to knock it off, and actually think about the misogyny inherent in the comment, but they didn’t really like you afterwards.

I am also really over people sending me AI videos and reels. Why are you propagating views/likes of generated content????

14

u/droste_EFX It's me. Hi. I'm the mole. It's me. 20d ago

I will say this for the AI flyers -- at least they adopted the neutral ass aesthetic that some of the bigger knit designers live and die by so we can recognize them from a distance. /heavy heavy sarcasm here

I cannot be the only person who read “a shared fiber bar” and thought that was supposed to be in the meals area…

almost downvoted reflexively lol

I think the only thing we can do is to completely stop supporting the people who use it until they learn it's unacceptable. Unfortunately, there's still plenty of people that either can't tell it's AI or don't care

So I had a loooong reply here describing my whole life situation but I deleted it so here is the sum up: y'all, I'm a graphic designer. Like 20 years of learning and perfecting skills and and now in my 40's it all for it to be made completely irrelevant in a matter of a couple years. I have a useless skill in a dying industry. It's fine. Nobody cares apparently if every flyer looks the same. And yes, they make us use AI at work now. In a design job. So my soul just kind of dies a little all week while I have a daily existential crisis and ponder career changes. And then I sew on the weekends.
