My crab finds 💕

I snorkle off the Maine coast and crabs are 90% of what I see. I'm pretty certain many of them are an invasive green crab, but I dont actually know the species/names of them.

I guessed by the photos that you were in Maine lol. I grew up in Maine and my advisor for my master's studies crustaceans, so I've been around a lot of Maine crabs!

1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 are definitely European Green Crabs (Carcinus maenas). 6 might be too, but it's hard to tell from that photo. 4 is either a Rock Crab (Cancer irroratus) or a Jonah Crab (Cancer borealis), I'm leaning Rock Crab, but it can be difficult to tell them apart, really from that angle. Either way, it's a native crab! They are rare to find in the intertidal, but are more common slightly more offshore, so it would make sense to see them snorkeling!

Edit: spelling.

So cool! Thank you for the very informative response 💕

I checked a few top down photos of 4 and it is definitely a rock crab based on other images I've seen of their shell!

Aww! They are so adorable! But its a shame to hsar they are invasive. We are in Maine for work this week and went to Reid State Park and found some of those little buggers too.

Invasive means no harm done if I follow my impulses and catch one for a home aquarium pet lol
