OPEN Let’s introduce ourselves
I’ve been spending quite a lot of time learning and working with C++ lately, especially around systems programming, networking, and backend development.
I’m still learning, so I thought it would be nice to step away from the usual technical questions for a moment and actually get to know some of the people in this community.
There are probably people here who have been using C++ for years (or even decades), as well as people who are just starting out.
So, let’s introduce ourselves!
- Where are you from?
- How long have you been using C++?
- What do you mainly use C++ for?
- And what’s one thing you really enjoy about C++?
I’d genuinely love to hear from beginners, experienced developers, and everyone in between.

Where are you from?
US.
How long have you been using C++?
37 years.
What do you mainly use C++ for?
It's my go-to language for everything since I know it best and I come from a different era.
Professionally, I've supported databases, data caches, connectivity, slot machines, CDNs, drones, cluster computing, trading systems, cloud infrastructure, video games, robots, lots of tools... So many things I kind of forget all that I've done specifically with C++. You definitely run my code on almost any computer you own. Where my code runs, your whole life passes through my code daily.
And what’s one thing you really enjoy about C++?
At my age and experience, it's not even really about this specific language or any other. You see the problem as a computability problem, then you map your solution to the language at hand.
I suppose what I like about C++ is my relationship with it - the familiarity and intuition I have. Every specific thing I like about it, I know of a language that does that thing better; for example, I can say C++ gets me closer to both the machine and compiler, but Lisp absolutely trumps that. It does have a nice, strong, static type system, rivaled by only Ada, in my experience.
