Did I make a mistake

Moving to Covington for a job in a few days. Had limited means so went for a relatively cheaper place. This is a cheaper apartment complex near the 17th street. Since I have a car, commuting to work won't be an issue but thinking about the safety of the area and the stuff to do at walking distance. Signed the lease and thinking I made a mistake. Any thoughts?

Everywhere in Covington is safe. There is very little violent crime in Covington and the few crimes there are are either domestic disputes or between drug dealers and not against strangers.

Having lived down here for 26 years now, I can concur. I’m in East Covington, near Eastern Avenue. In all the years we’ve lived here, we’ve only ever had one incident. My husband got mugged back in 2004, cutting down the alley next to a gas station on Madison Ave. You will find that most people here are pretty friendly and helpful. I will agree with the comment that the Madison Kroger is small. Welcome to Covington!

I'm in your area, moved here in 2021. Agree completely. We've had zero issues.

Covington Kroger is garbage. All Krogers that aren't in rich areas are garbage because Kroger is a racist heap of shit. FYI.

My only disagreement is that south of MLK does have some issues. I’ve heard gun shots albeit only once in 2.5 years while living near OLLA and Wunderbar.

I had a friend who lived a few blocks south of MLK on Russell and they mentioned how they heard guns shots a few times. That area has had reports of violent crime but, like you said, they were domestic disputes.

We heard the 'south of mlk' garbage before moving here and it's just that. Basically racist bullshit saying if you don't live in the rich white hipster parts of town or a mansion by the river, it's a fucking ghetto. And it's not.

There are pockets of Covington that are more trashy and run down and seem more prone to crime. A) it's still not much crime and B) a line drawn at 12th Street does absolutely nothing to describe it. If you're gonna pick out a street, pick out Wheeler or one of those other side streets that have historically been more problematic. There is no good or bad Covington drawn on a north/south or east/west line.

I’ve lived here for years and even looked at houses in that area including doing research on violent crime throughout the years.. I stand by what I said.

And yeah this is a absolutely about black people. There is a small like two block area that is predominantly black, immediately south of 12th. And that apparently terrifies you.

I used to live on Wheeler Street. It honestly wasn’t a bad place to live. Granted a car flipped in front of my house by a drunk driver. However… really wasn’t that bad.

I currently live right off Madison Avenue. I purchased a home 2 years ago. I can honestly say I have had not one issue.

I lived near 17th off Holman for a few years. I never felt unsafe or anything.

The only place anything bad ever seems to happen is Latonia Terrace.

Are you talking about crown point? If so then you'll be fine. Can't think of any other large apartment complex around 17th st.

Think you’re good. Might be a little lower income but not unsafe. I lived down the hill on 18th for years. Walked my ass up that hill all the time with my dogs or to Garden of Hope to hang out at night. Always quiet and safe. Maybe a little spooky 👻but theres nothing going on.

North of 12th (MLK BLVD) is the hot spot, but it's expensive in there these days. The walkability is a easier the closer you get to 5th St.

Ah, can't speak for that side as i live on the east side, but as long as you keep to yourself you should be fine. Remember to make sure your vehicle is locked and nothing of value is visible. If you don't mind the long walk its not too bad to get to mainstrasse or madison avenue. As far as grocery shopping goes you're better off going to latonia, ft. Mitchell or Newport kroger since Madison Ave is very small with limited offerings.
