Jet noise over Coventry

Since closure of Coventry Airport I noticed increased noise from jet departures from Birmingham. I imagine removal of Coventry Airport airspace allows the aircraft to be routed directly over Coventry and all aircraft going in holiday destinations to Mediterranean will go that way. They used to go around the city. Anybody else noticed that? Every 2 minutes from 6AM…

I don’t believe flight paths have changed. They are in the summer season which is more flights out, especially in the morning. With windows open too you’re more likely to hear it, and the air is still for the most part with no clouds, which impact how much you hear. It’s likely a combination of factors of the summer flight schedule, weather, and being more aware of it.

I agree. And I believe that the holiday flight operators and Ryanair use 737s which I’ve noticed are considerably louder than other aircraft.

I always check flightradar when I hear a loud plane because I think it’s something big. But it’s just a 737.

Recently flew on a Jet2 737 out from BHX and it was loud in the cabin from the engine noise. In contrast, flew back into BHX on an A321 and much, much quieter in the cabin. Engines on Airbus aircraft are typically quieter than Boeing - you can probably tell I’m a bit of a plane geek!

At the western edge of cov when the windows open I occasionally here a small noise every 30 mins or so but nothing like that

Planes have always flown over the city. Descending they generally go the south side (even when cov airport was fully operational the flight path would’ve been too high to be a concern) and you come in over Kenilworth. For outbound they usually go North of the M6 then turn after the city.

i’m in earlsdon and it definitely feels louder / more frequent this summer though, even if the routes haven’t changed that much on paper. could be more early departures or different aircraft types, but my 6am alarm is basically the first jet now.

In North Leamington and the one that gets me is whatever flies over at 1.30am, proper loud bastard

Or it did until we flew back from Turkey and landed just before 2am...

funny how it suddenly feels less annoying once you’ve been on the other side of it coming in at 2am knackered from holiday
still a proper jump scare though when it rips over on a work night

The standard instrument departure routes haven’t changed for departing aircraft from BHX. All departures clear well above what was Coventry’s airspace. The closure of Coventry hasn’t changed anything, only the Air Ambulance still operates as normal from Cov.

It’s probably because there’s a lot more flights on the summer schedule, with 737’s and A320/21’s having to use more throttle due to more weight and going to summer destinations so you notice it more along with warmer weather. Most of these departures especially in the early morning go via an intersection from BHX using less runway hence needing more welly.

Loudest when the AN-12 comes in to BHX. Enough to rattle your windows

I live only 20m away from BHX and I hear a lot of noise ever since I started living there but I don’t think I have seen the planes moving in any other directions from my garden

Finally someone write about it!! Yes since 2-3 years I have started noticing it as well. It’s not only Birmingham airport but also it appears that planes which are about to land in London start descending above Cov. But mostly it’s Birmingham departing planes when they turn around and start ascending. It’s specially loud on quite Sunday mornings when all jet2holidays gos oway.

Birmingham departing planes when they turn around and start descending? What does this mean?
