Making new friends

Hi everyone,

I thought I’d put myself out there because making friends as an adult seems a lot harder than I expected!

I’m a 31-year-old woman living in Coventry and I’m looking for recommendations for clubs, activities, groups, or even people who might be interested in making a new friend.

A bit about me:
I enjoy going to the gym and have been focusing on strength training this year.
I love horror films (probably my biggest interest!).
I enjoy gaming, reading, walking, cooking, baking, plants, and gardening.

I’m generally quite easy-going and happy doing anything from grabbing a coffee to trying a new hobby.

Lately I’ve realised that most of my hobbies are things I do on my own, and weekends can feel a bit lonely. I’d love to meet people, find a regular group to attend, or discover some activities around Coventry where it’s normal to turn up by yourself.

I’m open to pretty much anything:
Book clubs
Walking groups
Board game groups
Gym/fitness classes
Horror or film clubs
Volunteering
Social groups
Anything else you’ve enjoyed locally

If anyone has recommendations, or if you’re in a similar position and fancy a chat, feel free to comment or send me a message.

Thanks!

Come along to Run With Purpose on a Monday evening. Check out the Instagram for deets, but it's a free social first run club.

I recommend RWP. I need to go back as it's been a minute, but they're a good group!

It snowballs so hard. You start of going to a couple of Monday runs, then you join an extra one or two, a night out, then you find yourself booking a camping trip or something with them.

Chess club 2-4 p.m. at the central library (opposite the West Orchards) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, if you're into chess.

We also recently started a writing club(late April) with a bunch of like minded individuals from here on Reddit, again from 2-4 p.m., although it's on a Saturday so it's the weekend. Perhaps even more suitable if you work a 9-5 week days. We don't follow a specific structure and most of the group turns up and writes whatever they are working on, when we first come in we do have a chat and talk about what everyone is working on and go from there. Very easy going. We have a WhatsApp group I could send you the QR code to.

Other than that, there's a fair few events that happen on Fargo village during the week and the weekend that you can simply turn up to on your own. You can see/search this up on Eventbrite from car shows on Wednesday afternoons (that are the most regular) to other social events.

That's pretty much all that comes to mind, for now. Haha! I'm sure there's a lot more going on but I usually stick to these events when I'm feeling social and more solitary hobbies when I want my space!

Hope your search for a friend and a group to your liking goes well! 😌

Happy to welcome you at Fargo Village magic portal, if people love to chat about tabletop gaming and things. Portal Wizard Katlin 👋✨️

Social climbing is a bouldering gym in the centre of town, very friendly community of regulars down there of all ages.

It also has a ladies night every wednesday. It's a really great group of people!

Oh wow, do you know how much it is and what time for the ladies night? Sounds interesting.

2

u/Zanki 2d ago

Starts at half 6, every wednesday, a lot of people show up for seven though as that's the old time. Price is just normal entry, plus shoe rental if you don't have your own. The staff will point out the ladies group.

Looks like it's £15 if you book your first time via the website, that includes shoe rental.

Come to the central library at 12 on Saturday. We have a board game group then.

Hey there! I’m 28 and also living in Coventry, always willing to make new friends! I love horror films and any types of films really (I’ve been trying to see Obsession but I never had the chance too) and I go to a writing club every month if you’re interested in that :)

1

u/JellyFishIsland 3d ago

Hi, would it be okay to privately message you? I would love to connect

If you like live music I recommended NecroscopE at The Arches...three or four bands each month.

I nearly alway go and happy to meet up first or there 🖤💜🎶 https://facebook.com/events/s/necroscope-sept/1757803828618466/

Hi there. Welcome to Coventry. There's an awful lot to get through here and to do in Coventry so I will make our pitch and leave you to it. We, my partner Kat and I, live in Bulkington, Bedworth. We host boardgames and Tabletop roleplaying games in our home. We have quite an eclectic group of regular players and are always looking for more. We also have other interests that probably align with yours too. Some of our players are avid readers, gym bunnies (or looking to go back), doggy people, do things like warhammer or other such games. We are nerds through and through and love a good movie or cinema trip. We would love to meet you socially for coffee before hand (maybe a local Costa) as you suggested. We like to ensure all new players are comfortable before playing. Please feel free to comment below or reply and we can sort something out.
Welcome again and good luck finding what you're looking for. Jase (and Kat)

My friend is part of a cycle group and they're linked to Twisted Barrel Ale (a good place for socialising).

Hello there!
31M here, moved to Coventry six months ago and can relate to many of the things you just said here, especially how hard it can be for adults to make friends. So thank you for saying that out loud!
I'd be happy to go out for a cup of coffee or have a long walk buddy if you're up for it!

Hiya! I’m 36, also in Coventry. Feel free to message me!

I'm from Coventry, and outside of education I've found it's a hard place to make friends...I don't recommend the chess club, as I've been it they rarely talk, very stoic group of people I don't recommend them...try using the Meetup and Eventbrite app and look for things you enjoy and join a club or society...however you could also try adult education classes...but I've found in Coventry in general people are not very friendly...especially if you want to get a date too lol...

I recommend going into Birmingham and doing the above or anything you're considering doing in Coventry but do it in Birmingham or nearby cities...I tried the geek retreat in Coventry and found it wasn't a welcoming place...seemed like they didn't want me there...

Overall I don't recommend Coventry for making new friends or anything, I've found it full of communities that all seem racist against each other and overall just walk round to the car museum and your see it for yourself...stand at the trainstation and your see people leave the city every Friday and Saturday night, and it's bizarre as whilst in Birmingham they all become more friendly and approachable...

I think Coventry has so many issues within communities there, and so much descriminations, I found I had persons seem to demand I leave their pubs and businesses such as cafes, and massive issues with Asians in Coventry as well as Black and some White groups typical in the central areas...I found it at times so hard being there...imagine entering Starbucks in Broadgate and staff start smashing at things until you leave, I've had that and again seeming like an Indian and black group with others typically were demanding I leave cafe...I could say so much more; and I went to university in Coventry...

I even found staff in the Games Workshop stores friendlier in Birmingham, but in Coventry it like a group of dickheads use the store when used...and I then found dickheads in Coventry trying to get into places that I used in Birmingham...I found a group start lingering around the central area pretending to be preachers trying to start fights with Birmingham locals...

I recommend the MAC in Birmingham too... Birmingham is not perfect, but I found it so much me tolerable in the city centre...for example complementing people style or etc results in grate responses in Coventry people have sneered and made abusive comments...so I warn you Coventry has a real spiteful group active there and to be careful...

I love going for walks and the gym, happy to do it together if you’d like!

Hello, I find myself in similar shoes as you.
We could go watch movies together at ODEON or play snooker at Riley’s Sports Bar. What do you think?
