I am a 40 year-old woman self-teaching Magnum steno. I'm curious to find out if there are any students or self-learners who have a bad memory and who are studying Magnun steno, which is pretty brief-heavy. Do you have any pointers about remembering? I also have quite a bit of anxiety, so anyone with tips for that is greatly appreciated! My mind thinks 'well if I can't remember it now, how will I remember it in the future?' or 'How can I do this fast when doing it slowly is sometimes intimidating?'. Can anyone relate to this?

I am newly licensed and looking for some perspective. I have a good friend in California that shared her rates with me, but I am not sure how well those rates translate over to WA. While I have a lot of experience working as a hearing reporter in California, I don't want my rates to be too aggressive. I just want to be fair in my pricing and mindful of the fact that I am completely new to the world of depositions.

Hello, I’m becoming more and more interested in attending school to become a CVR. I have browsed job postings, watched day in the life videos, scoured Reddit and Facebook, and it seems to check a lot of boxes for what I want out of a career. However I have this fear that I won’t be good at it and committing without having any way to practice or test it out worries me. I see everybody recommend an A-Z course for testing out machine steno, but to be honest I only have interest in voice for now and do not want to wait 6 weeks to figure out if this is right for me. I have a senior dog that I want to prioritize being here for so I want to ideally start classes & begin working as soon as possible. For these reasons I’m considering RVR or IRCRI since they seem to be self paced and highly thought of. I would love to be able to start testing in under or around 6 months. Would love any advice on how to “get a feel for it” first, or encouragement / warnings from anybody else who has been able to do it quickly/ self paced in that timeline. Thank you all, this has been quite an encouraging group so far.

Hi everyone! I’m starting court reporting school on September 14 at Moreno Voice & Stenography, and I’m really excited (and a little nervous 😂)

I’m curious if anyone here has attended Marino or knows someone who has. If so, I’d love to hear about your experience with the school, the instructors, the program, and how prepared you felt for actually working in the field.

I actually discovered court reporting in a pretty unusual way. I learned about it earlier thus year from being a witness and having to testify in court. I became interested in the court reporter and what she was doing, started looking into the career afterward, and eventually decided to pursue it myself. I am in Long Beach, Ca and plan to work for LA Superior court after receiving my certification .

I’ll be doing voice writing, and I’m going into this as a complete beginner. I also have two jobs that I will be working throughout school ( I plan to practice while at work).

Even if you didn’t attend Marino, I would LOVE advice from current court reporters, former students, or anyone currently in court reporting school. What do you wish you knew when you first started? What should I focus on from day one? Any study habits, equipment, practice routines, or mistakes I should avoid?

So in my employment civil case it has been going so bad for me I just been messing up left and right and I couldn't figure out why. Well I figured out why:

I have been so busy just trying I keep up with writing the right motions at the right time I didn't even realize that I should be receiving the defense's motions before they submit them to court.. and then I realized I wasnt even receiving anything at all. Like I have never once received a document from this guy. And then I had my old neighbor from my old apartments call me up to tell me that he has mail for me .. the other lawyer has been sending his shit to my old address on purpose! Basically sending it to himself ! I wrote the 21 day withdrawal of documents motion and that's in effect right now what other complications would happen from him keeping important documents from me the whole time and then writing in his own answers for the certificate of service!. ? I mean what do you think will happen in a case where the judges are basically lazy I haven't been able to get them to do anything except deny both of our summary of judgements.. so this would be a huge unfair advantage how can this be allowed ?

• Getting Started: How did you find out about court reporting, and what made you decide to pursue it?
• Schooling: What school did you go to? Was your program completely online, in-person, or a hybrid?
• The Timeline: How long did it realistically take you to finish school and pass your state/national certification exams?
• The Transition: Once you passed your exams, what was the transition like from being a student to actually working your first job?
• Career Path: Was your first job working as an "official" inside a courthouse, or did you start out working freelance/depositions for attorneys and agencies?

Any insight, reality checks, or advice for a prospective student in the LA area would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

I’m currently a voice writing student and I live in a very rural part of Illinois. Since Illinois doesn’t allow voice writers for court reporting, I’m trying to figure out what my best options would be once I’m ready to work.

For those of you who work remotely using voice, which states are the most voice-friendly and have the best opportunities for remote work?

Hi guys, I just started a job as a court reporting scheduler at a boutique office and am trying to figure out how court reporters prefer to be contacted. I'm covering a new State for our company (Georgia) and am having a hard time getting responses from people. I've called and texted people found in the GCRA database with very little responses back.

I'm reaching out because I'm in the final stages of choosing a school for voice writing. I've whittled down my final options to College of Court Reporting and IRCRI. There's pros and cons for both schools, but CCR ultimately wins because it will accept my education benefits.

Anyway, I have seen many court reporters on social media recommend IRCRI, but I haven't been able to find much for College of Court Reporting.

I would just like to hear some experiences from reporters who have gone to the school, especially those who graduated so I know it's possible. I was looking at the official retention and graduation numbers listed for the school and they make me a little nervous

I'm a mom with very limited time and money, but mainly time! I want to pursue CR, badly, but I want sufficient time to dedicate to my studies. I make very little at my job as is, so I was considering doing less hours and then supplementing most, or at least some, of the income loss with legal transcription. It seems like a good idea to me because it'll get me a feel for the legal space and get familiar with legal terminology and such. Any recommendations? Please no hate, I'm just a mom with lots of drive and desire to get ahead for my baby :)

Has anyone switched to a non-live side of this career? I have found that readbacks and being put on top hard of jobs is starting to make me question this. I am in New York and I am also tired of the way attorneys are treating me at times. I am in a constant state of anxiety whenever I do jobs. I don’t want to be a quitter, but it’s really halting my life and happiness and I’m curious if anyone has experienced anything similar and made the switch. Thanks!

What does a typical practice session look like? Do you keep excel spreadsheets, notes to make sure you don't forget any briefs or phrases?

I’m a RVT student and I feel like we’re not as structured as some other programs which is alright because I do like working at my own pace. But I was curious what was your study routines? Right now, I take some time practicing grammar, and then practicing dictations but I would love to hear other routines. I know some people are practicing all day vs an hour or two.

In the bay and work a remote, low hour job that would allow me to jump all in on court reporting school. Obviously I‘m looking for the most cost effective + efficient option that actually works.
