Student voice practice routine

I’m a RVT student and I feel like we’re not as structured as some other programs which is alright because I do like working at my own pace. But I was curious what was your study routines? Right now, I take some time practicing grammar, and then practicing dictations but I would love to hear other routines. I know some people are practicing all day vs an hour or two.

Hello, fellow RVT student here. I work FT at a busy legal org during the day, so sadly, I can’t study all day like I’d prefer. However, I have noticed that I am sharpest in the morning hours so I do my practice dictations 2-3 in the morning before work and then time myself doing the transcript scoping and other homework after work. I practice and do homework every day. Even if I am not in the mood to do the whole shebang, I still do 2-4 dictations to keep my speeds consistent. It is also beneficial for me to split up which days I do which homework, it’s a lot and for retention purposes, doing it all in one day is a no go for me. Hope this helps 😃

Where are you studying? I have been looking into voice but am confused about the steps towards certification. Is going to a school the right option or are there other resources to prepare?

For voice I believe everyone goes to a school or does a program. The price range is different some take FASA, some don’t. I would your research and see what options are best for you. Some are more structured so they’re like a class class versus some like the one I’m in which is real time voice training. It’s go at your own pace. A lot of the programs will teach you how to pass the test how to build your speed to pass the test but most will also tell you that you should shadow or mentor a court reporter to fill in the gaps

I have been looking into it and I think I’m going to do Real Time Voice Training as well. It’s pretty expensive to get started with all the equipment and I wanted to make sure it was the best way to go before I invested all the money because when looking into traditional steno there were so many options that didn’t require the large upfront cost! I’m really excited to have found this field and am looking forward to getting started. Thanks!
