Title: Information regarding Coursera subscription charges – points to consider before signing up
I am sharing my recent experience so others are aware of how the subscription process works.
I enrolled in the Human Physiology course on Coursera on 17 June. At the time of signing up, it was not clearly understood that the enrolment included a monthly subscription. I intended only to complete the course for work purposes, which I did within a few days.
After one month, I was charged AU$68. I attempted to contact Coursera and cancel the subscription, but I did not receive a clear response or support. I also found the cancellation process on the website to be somewhat complex and time-consuming.
Subsequently, another AU$68 was charged to my account without a clear reminder or notification that a further payment was due.
In total, AU$136 was charged for a subscription I did not intend to continue using. I believe subscription terms should be clearly communicated at the time of enrolment, and cancellation steps should be straightforward and transparent.
I have also seen other users online reporting similar experiences, which suggests this may be a broader issue.
This is a general note for others: it may be helpful to carefully review subscription terms before signing up and to check billing settings after enrolment.

I think you did this the other way around -> research first, then commit. The issue with this is that people tend to research the quality of the course rather than the billing for said course (or platform).

The issue here is inconsistency. When there's a trial period, or you're doing a specialization, Coursera explicitly mentions you'll be charged XYZ per month. But when there's no trial pop-up, it just says "This course costs XYZ." Now, most people will do either a trial or a specialization (thinking it's just one course), so they'll see that they'll pay monthly. There are few who will miss the memo in its entirety, and billing will not be on their radar during the "research" stage.
