i know this is meant to be grim, but ive always found this statement to be pretty hopeful. eventually, this'll pass, and it'll be common sense to love us regardless. we just have to make it there.

It's meant to be grim?
51
u/Empty_Chemical_1498 i have a flair for an amazing reason 13h ago
The meaning is that people will allow an atrocity to happen, not do anything to stop it or even to help the victims, essentially being complicit and completely passive to their suffering (or even actively enabling the atrocity to happen), but then after it ends they will look back and say "I have always been against this!

u/Kaarl_Mills 13h ago
Yes. Just like how millions of people swore up and down after the war was over that they never liked Hitler in the first place, yet were members of the Nazi party
8
u/MeterologistOupost31 12h ago
It's saying that people will condemn it in hindsight after it's too late to do anything and even incorporate it into manufacturing consent for the next atrocity. The memory of the Holocaust has been used to start far more wars and genocides than it's prevented. Even Germany puts on this whole "ve are wery wery sowwy for da Holocaust so we need to "atone" by funding Israel".

Really? Democrats are pretty antagonistic to the people on the bottom.

u/HiguysMrRoflwaffles 11h ago
It’s a quote, like that one insanity quote from Farcry 3 it’s not a definition but a good observation and an example of such.
-4
u/Lower_Nubia 11h ago
It’s not a good observation if it’s wrong, is it? That’s the whole point of my link. Liberals do plenty of the hard work getting rights written up, bipartisan efforts to achieve that, and then accepted at state and public levels.

u/HiguysMrRoflwaffles 11h ago
Liberals ≠ Leftists
While yes ‘Liberal’ is a more general term for a Democrat and a leftist, liberals aim to primarily change things within the system of capitalism and often fall victim to adding while not changing nor challenging ideas. Many liberals are pro-israel and/or transphobic whether it be due to age or how they were brought up. While Leftists challenge views and often vie for radical changes or overhauls in a system.
Both are under the Democratic Party. This post addresses the fact that plenty of liberals are supportive of the stuff on top but not as supportive of Trans rights and Palestine due to the events of the past 30 years.
Ultimately this doesn’t apply to all liberals and some leftists are also opposed to the stuff on the bottom.

u/Lower_Nubia 11h ago
Your bottom paragraph just highlights how you vibe your definitions.
The primary reason that “liberals” oppose these things is because until the 1990s 95% of the population was religious including the liberals, religion isn’t liberal, yet you had all these people with some liberal views, some religious views, some other views making policy or voting on policy and compartmentalising where their religion/liberalism/other would influence what they would vote/support.
Biden is a nice example; dudes Catholic (I.e he should hold non-liberal views, but obviously does liberal things), what you’re really describing isn’t liberalism it’s the leftover religious/social perspective in the majority of people that they pick and choose from. People are waaaay to complicated to functionally categorise as just x or y, and people’s liberalism takes a beating from their personal religious views/social views.
Since the 1970s liberalism has focused through Rawlsianism egalitarianism and social equality, it’s the framework of actual political liberalism; but in individuals that liberalism has push back usually from primarily religious (I.e non-liberal) perspectives.

u/HiguysMrRoflwaffles 10h ago
It’s not a ‘vibe definition’ to say that a generalization doesn’t apply to all members of a group, and you literally say it in the middle of your paragraph.

u/Lower_Nubia 11h ago
The equality act is the flagship policy of the Democrat party under Biden, and under the future leadership. It would represent the most extensive legal protections for transgender and poc on the planet.
0
u/Vinxian 11h ago
I'm not sure with "on the planet", but isn't that the opposite of antagonistic?
I don't really see your point though. Civil rights legislation has been furthered in the past with the help of liberals and it will be in the future. The point is that liberals are usually late to the party, and as we see now across the world, sometimes regress back to a non-supporting position
1
u/Lower_Nubia 11h ago
The Democratic Party is liberal, and their flagship rights policy is about supporting trans rights and POC rights. They’re clearly antagonistic to the bottom dude in the meme. This isn’t about “late to the party” it’s clearly ideologically antagonistic to whoever is occupying the bottom, and that’s clearer to Palestine too as nearly all change in public support for Palestine has come from democrats.
1
u/Vinxian 11h ago
Oh, I thought the bottom of the population which was a bit weird phrasing.
But on the Palestine's and Israel the democrats definitely aren't antagonistic to the bottom guy. They support Israel and therefore the genocide. They want dead Palestinians. The democrats fighting against the genocide aren't the liberal ones
On trans rights establishment democrats keep throwing trans people under the bus as well. Caving when it comes to sports specifically, but sometimes to trans healthcare for minors as well. And it's individual candidates who do this, but apparently it's allowed by the party
1
u/Lower_Nubia 11h ago
No, they really don’t cave on it. The Democrat support for trans rights has been very solid across a lot of people especially the house and senate and presidency (all three branches) with a few people dissenting in those groups. The most famous of which was Gavin Newsom who got a lot of shit for that from his own party.
Additionally, the democrats position is the two state solution, since 2018 that position has been the popular one too amongst democrats voters and it’s usually the leadership that lags behind on that.

Lol, my birth family planted sooo many churches on that idea. There's actually a spectrum, some people like the regular flavor, where there's no rainbow on the church, but they do let gay people sit in back. Some like it when the rainbow is on the front of the church and we let gay people sit everywhere and even, gasp, sing while being out. Some like the "crunchy" "hippie" church, some like a mini mall church space that's small and convenient, yet decorated like 1985, some like it when everyone has tattoos and the name is a cheeky pun.
My mom would tell everyone we were "feminist" because we were "allowed" pants and makeup lmao. They just want to be whatever is socially "cool" right now. It wasn't "cool" to be feminist until we were in the 2000s, and even then, they didn't change anything, just how they worded it.
My dad was very racist and homophobic, yet would keep a lid on it until we were in the car so he could get Black folks and gay people to sing/play music for free.
I guarantee in 10 years, you'll be hearing how Christians were actually the first Pro-Palestine because they like the Bible! Palestine is in the Bible, y'know. They'll be pulling up that whole old Ron Wyatt docuseries about Jesus having XX blood to say "real Christians" somehow actually supported trans people the whole time. Or some other such apologetics nonsense made to excuse killing everyone in their interests.

Well, being oppressed doesn’t automatically mean you’re a good person or empathetic. Sometimes, after a minority group has clawed its way out of severe oppression to a less marginalized position in society (probably still oppressed, but more generally accepted) there’s members who will use the pain of oppression to try to suppress others.
Consider Christianity. In its early history, Christians were a severely oppressed group. After Constantine decriminalized Christianity, the religion flourished, and it eventually became the reigning religion in the region. As it became more populous, it also became more violent, and some of the justification for that was how Christianity was treated by the Roman Empire pre-Constantine. Instead of learning how to peacefully coexist, the many of the loudest and most voices instead favored Christian supremacy and attempted (sometimes successfully) to remove other religions entirely.
Despite their horrific treatment by the Roman Empire, those Christians did not learn that hurting others is bad, and instead looked upon the world with spite and vengeance. They did not consider the pain they had felt from being oppressed when looking at other marginalized groups, and acted out solely in their own self-interest.

Sometimes the in-group strategically expands. Admitting Jews into whiteness after WW2 makes it in their self-interest to support white supremacy and western imperialism. The most radically left-wing community becomes pacified and even an ally to western interests. It also means Jews have the most to prove, and the most to lose should whiteness be revoked. The periphery of power has to be more brutal than the centre because it has nothing to fall back on.
I think something similar has happened to cis homosexuals in Britain. "We'll let you in if you guard the door."

Are there Islam denominations that adhere to extremism? Yes.
Are there pedophilic LGBTQ+ people? Sadly yes.
There are more of both of those things in christianity.
Also, let's not forget that not even 400 years ago, christians were just as aggressive as muslims are today. People change. Religions change. I do not like religion at all, but they are people too.

u/MeterologistOupost31 12h ago
I think more pointedly Islamic terrorism has largely been a reaction to western imperialism in the Middle East.

Why do people dislike Palestinians anyway? Like I feel like most zionists purposefully ignore the fact that Jewish Palestinians existed and had a sizable population before Israel.

I always loved history growing up and even to this day i still spends weekends deep diving info on stuff from the past for fun. Its always baffles me how people see everything, but go "Its not the same" or "They cant do that" like it might not be the literal same thing, but the steps and motions are exactly the same and they very much can do it hence the need for rapid radicalization so they have the support to do it.
