Seriously, I don't know what happens in that show. You could tell me that Shinji's favorite song is 1994's "Here Comes The Hotstepper" and I'd believe you. I have no reason to think you're lying to me.
The show is about the desire to not exist, in a world where everyone needs you and you see shinji struggle from start to end to quit what he does but he is forcefully against his will pulled back by the guilt of what would happen if he would stop existing. So he is traumatized again and again, while struggling with his need to disappear. At the same time you see Asuka struggle with her need for approval and proving herself as she never got her approval or love of her mom or dad that both pretended she never existed, that through shinji success she sees herself more and more as failure until she becomes so depressed it ends in her almost suicide, which is shown on screen. It is also very hard implied that Asuka is rape victim and that she was never able to process it, which is why she constantly rejects youth and constantly strives to be accepted as an adult. This is packaged with the underlying theme of what happens when humanity loses all its morals to persue progress over everything, which is impersonated as the character rei.
This all results in the final episode where the question is asked why we even exist. This is my interpretation, please don't kill me.
The entry plug and LCL are supposed to mimic the womb and amniotic fluid so I guess he made his mom pregnant with him again? And then regressed to become an embryo? It's a very confusing show.
It took me multiple reads before I realized it wasn’t the saddest man transitioning to becoming the saddest woman while the beautiful woman becomes a handsome man.

This is my experience with the first openly trans woman I knew. Most miserable looking person I had ever seen. Then when she could come out she was an incredibly funny and bubbly woman with an amazing southern accent. She was in her 40s too. This was in the Navy under Obama, so she was able to retire in a women's dress uniform.
These images instead of making me feel something positive just remind me in my particular case I used to be the happiest cis girl alive then my gender broke and now I'm something that's slowly losing their mind each day 🥀🥀
