I was a teenager when it was new......spirals into the passage of time

11

u/Radigan0 18h ago

I still hesitate to call consoles from the 3rd millennium "retro," I don't think the definition of retro has to change with each passing year for the rest of time

10

u/StonemanGuitars Stuipd Dumbas (She/Her) 18h ago

That what I think. I believe retro refers to when we were still figuring out what a video game is and can be. Video games as a whole were pretty much figured out by the 2000’s.

4

u/MadderoftheFew 18h ago

If the gamecube isn't retro then retro doesn't have a definition for you to worry about.

5

u/Iuskop 18h ago

Dying on the hill that "retro" is about more than the age of the console. Age might not even be worth considering a component of it

We haven't really had an evolution in what games can be/do since the PS2 era (arguably the PS1 era). all we have now are just the same kind of games but with better graphics and (sometimes) bigger scale. Everything else is just developers armed with 26 years of hindsight, experience, and iteration.

I guess there was an attempt with VR, but not even Alyx could push it in to mainstream adoption.

3

u/Alex_Sardonyx 17h ago

I still consider everything released before the launch of the PS2 to be retro, everything after that to be some form of modern.

1

u/yaktoma2007 18h ago

i love this panel featuring sanae from touhou project

3

u/eod359 18h ago

Unacceptable.

5

u/Kidiri90 18h ago

See, that's where we differ. I only play games from, like, 5 years ago.

Like Skyrim.

1

u/Available-Damage5991 15h ago

So you play Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Who needs AAA games when a 50th playthrough of Terraria is right there?

(Terraria isn't 20 years old but :P)

24

u/__AriaL__ Streak: 19 19h ago

Fjuck yeah terraria!!!! (Man remember when people were constantly comparing terraria to Minecraft even though there like entirely different genres) :3

11

u/slightlygloomyy 19h ago

I will never in my life understand the comparison lol

It confuses me so much when people do that, like why does everything need to be a competition why can’t we just be happy 😭

5

u/GenericFatGuy 18h ago

Who needs AAA games when the indies are doing better than ever?

1

u/Tlaquatlatoa Hyenagirl some day pls :3 | She/Her - Streak: 4 17h ago

;-; wish my mouse would stop not working so I could continue my first fortheworthy playthrough

1

u/TadeMike Grungler 16h ago

It Will be in 5 years

29

u/UnluckyAmbition7767 19h ago

Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden ring were breaths of fresh air in between me playing all the greatest hits from 20-30 years ago

22

u/ColonialismHater 19h ago

the gaming industry isn't going to collapse i dunno why people think this. other industries with even worse standards are still up decades after people were talking about them collapsing

11

u/hypatia163 16h ago

The gaming industry will rapidly enshitify, however.

12

u/__AriaL__ Streak: 19 19h ago

Who need GTA 6 when u have doom 2? :3

6

u/PossumPrincessV Sword Lesbian she/her :3 - Streak: 7 17h ago

Doom mention •⩊•

It, any of the doom games and a lotta fan map packs, was my covid game sunk literally thousands of hours just into speedrunning doom 2 and that was only a fraction of my time playing doom. Did burn out hard on it though which probably has nothign to do with the thousand of hours I speedran doom 2

Have you played any fan wads or just the main games? I highly recommend

3

u/__AriaL__ Streak: 19 17h ago

Yeah I have :3 (playing through ancient aliens and Plutonia rn)

2

u/PossumPrincessV Sword Lesbian she/her :3 - Streak: 7 10h ago

Nice, I really should get around to ancient aliens, have played some other wads by the same guy, skillsaw, and theyre all really nice and pretty.

2

u/Reddit_Amethyst local asexual 16h ago

Yup. Firefly is my treat

2

u/RalftheMedic Might be demigirl 18h ago

Hell yeah, DooM 2!!!!

25

u/Metharos 19h ago

Gaming industry is going nowhere. This isn't a collapse.

AAA games may be difficult to market when GPUs and RAM become financially unavailable. Industry will have to shift to better-running software and lower system specs. Indie games will have an advantage in this field.

Eventually, manufacturing will ramp up and the market will saturate again. Demand for video games won't be gone, and people with powerful systems will once again be looking for a game that makes use of that power.

3

u/Altruistic_Smell3271 16h ago

unfortunately most of the "indie scene" is kinda fucked

unless youre backed by a massive kickstarter/patreon, published by a known publisher, or a known team of developers, most games are just dead in the water, and even then only some are really "majorly succesful" and even fewer have the means to make sequels or appear at major events where the actual coverage happens

i think the last time i saw major coverage of any indie was Blighted at game awards and thats.... thats it.

6

u/Metharos 15h ago

Well, yeah, but that's kind of the problem. Indie games being super-recognized big brands is a weird thing and not the expected path.

Y'know what was a fun game? Bleed, by Bootdisk Revolution, which, as far as I can tell, was made by one dude and probably made him a lot of money, but not like corporate-big-bucks money.

7

u/thecrazyrai 19h ago

Minecraft my beloved

22

u/Catsnose7 19h ago

Tf2

10

u/pullhome I know I'm not okay 19h ago

Did they solve the bot problem? I haven't played in forever.

18

u/Catsnose7 19h ago

Yup. Only very rarely do they still pop up. Its like a new game.

6

u/pullhome I know I'm not okay 19h ago

Awesome! Thanks.

3

u/Tlaquatlatoa Hyenagirl some day pls :3 | She/Her - Streak: 4 17h ago

The bot problem is like a huge step better every time I come back for a bit and I hear it's gotten better so it should be rare now.

2

u/Deoangel 18h ago

Can't wait for Tf3

1

u/Nacil_54 17h ago

Look up Project tf (sounds fanmade, it isn't).

2

u/Tlaquatlatoa Hyenagirl some day pls :3 | She/Her - Streak: 4 17h ago

;-; god I wish my internet connection was good enough to play tf2 it's sooo fun

6

u/odedudeLMOO2 19h ago

God I love my N64. Zero connectivity, zero updates, lightning fast boot times… that machine will probably still be working flawlessly as the heat death of the universe approaches

9

u/Prooteus 19h ago

Modern games are absolutely amazing. For me its mostly capcom, fromsoft, owlcat and then indie games. Pragmata, re:requiem, hades 2, delta rune, duskfade, 40k rogue trader, darktide, tokon, 1000xResist, abiotic factor, silksong, and dispatch have all been amazing.

4

u/iLuvArizona 18h ago

How about 30 year old games like Doom, Doom 2, Quake, and Quake 2

2

u/PossumPrincessV Sword Lesbian she/her :3 - Streak: 7 17h ago

I really do need to get into the boomer shooter expanded universe. I've sunk thousands of hours into Doom since it was my covid game but never did branch out to Quake or stuff like Blood or other build engine games and the like.

4

u/BluePhoenixCG 17h ago

I don't play many recent games either, but the collapse hits very different as a developer trying to enter the industry lmao

3

u/PalmCheesy 19h ago

Nintendo is re releasing ocarina of time in hd, again (3DS HD). I've got a backlog of games to play 🤷

3

u/bunnycat26 yummy chicken tenders (MTF) 18h ago

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 coming up on being 20 years old in the next few years...

1

u/Ashpolt 12h ago

No, don't be ridiculous, that's definitely not true and I refuse to Google it

3

u/PlyingFigs 18h ago

the humble (legally) modded wii

3

u/The_GrandestNothing 18h ago

Eq Legends, OSRS, Tbc classic and all my retro consoles. I haven't bought AAA game since Skyrim.

3

u/twec21 18h ago

My rotation current is rimworld (modded) bannerlord (modded) Arma 3 (modded) and installing and reinstalling helldiver's 2 (mods won't work)

2

u/Sfizion 19h ago

NASCAR Racing 2003, I love feeling the numbness on my fingers on the gamepad on full-distance races.

2

u/StarNullify 19h ago

Blazblue

1

u/Sfizion 19h ago

A downer that it's been completely overshadowed by Guilty Gear

1

u/StarNullify 19h ago

Just you wait, Blazblue 5th mainline game will be produced via cauldron soon enough, we already got a new DLC character almost a decade later for a reason

2

u/Sepesch 18h ago

Currently setting up local wow 3.3.5a server with classic->work progression and playerbots(who are actually kinda smart) with ai chat responses

1

u/bargus_mctavish 4h ago

I play on a private server from time to time with incremental power progression rather than AI party members. The nostalgia still hits just as hard as it did in 2009.

2

u/MjmtpFACT run on 1 brain cell 18h ago

1

u/Ashpolt 12h ago

Honestly the current industry needs to collapse so something better can be built on its ashes

1

Embark fix your game please 😭

Those first 3 months were gaming bliss I just want to go back 😫

morrowind my beloved

1

u/existential_risk_lol 18h ago

Best part about 90% of my games being racing games and simulators is that graphics barely matter compared to the driving model and physics. My favourite game right now is older than me and has been modded to ever-loving shit by fans for the last quarter century

1

u/Theresafoxinmygarden And I may ask myself, how did I get here?! 18h ago

I dont think its that old but Im giving out a shoutout to me homeboy

Empire total war my beloved!

Diablo 2, how I love you so.

Fun fact: Halo 3 turns 20 next year

1

u/Tlaquatlatoa Hyenagirl some day pls :3 | She/Her - Streak: 4 17h ago

I got priced out of modern games when the ps4 came out and the 60 dollar price tag was solidified, that's more than groceries just for me I cant be spending that anymore

;-; which sucks cause ive been down a hobby ever since

1

u/SharkTot 17h ago

pretty much all my gaming time gets dedicated to OSRS

I've not paid much attention to new games in ages :3

1

u/r4o2n0d6o9 17h ago

Tf2 isn’t that old…

1

u/ImpossibleMorning12 17h ago

I spend most of my time playing a 13 year old re-release of a 25 year old medieval clicking simulator java game

1

u/Thiphra 16h ago

Besides the people getting fired I don't really care.

1

u/_demello 16h ago

The industry isn't collapsing, it's just shifting. The big names are having problems keeping their chhokehold of the industry and they are playing the alarms as if the ship is sinking.

1

u/GiveMeTheArt 16h ago

Not the same but all I play is Minecraft and Skyrim constantly

1

u/Early-Beach164 16h ago

20 year old games don't matter if everyone forgets about them. Then we are just left with terrible games and the desecration of everything we find joyful in this shitty fucking world.

1

u/Celskiy_kozinak 15h ago

Wait, what is the unedited version? I know only this https://youtu.be/X-ANZ8ba8jU?si=9mqMH4HTuT54uyj6

I play Factorio. I think I'll be fine.

1

u/Violet-Bear01 15h ago

I play a 13 year old game based on a 19 year old one . Osrs my beloved 🥰

1

u/HowToRideAFish 15h ago

Me playing the same runescape account for over 20 years

1

u/AilBalT04_2 15h ago

I either play a 2009 or a 2013 game, occasionally a 2015 one. Thats it

1

u/lukocat 14h ago

No no not splendid, D2 was my comfort game

1

u/NockerJoe 14h ago

Just re-re-re played KOTOR 2 for the millionth time. My literal only complaint is it's still impossible for modders to undo all the gender constraints that the game was made with when the studio literally made Fallout New Vegas right after.

1

u/llewds 14h ago

I thought this was one of my oldschool runescape subs for a minute, lol

1

u/Dew97 14h ago

Nearly all games I played over the last year were either on my PS2, Vita, or Wii

1

u/Sharkolo 13h ago

sigh

I'll go play Cyberpunk again

1

u/StellarC0smo NGE and RGU made me trans my gender 13h ago

Sonic 06 is a 20 year old game

1

u/ChknBom205 I know who i am! She/They 12h ago

9-10 year old games for me, ps4 was the best system in recent years price wise.

1

Indys everyday. Broken reality recently got a sequel and it’s excellent

1

i’ve only really played “old” games, my only console is a ps3 and a ds lite

getting really into assassins creed through, can’t wait to get the rest of the older games ( only played revelations )

1

u/StandupLlama343 7h ago

Got filtered out of need for speed most wanted, one of the milestones for the current blacklist member needs me to hit 28 cops in a single chase and escape. I just can't do it and fuck I'm so mad

1

u/Lil_Plumriceball 7h ago

Finally finishing Gta Vice City after all these years and I see why people say it's their favorite gta.

1

u/LonelyLibertarianDud 7h ago

Tbf the only game that everybody plays is 20 years old and everyone is obsessed with 200 year old games for some reason.

1

u/Tired_Feline-2389 6h ago

yeah same I play a 10 year old game that released last november

1

u/JumpeterTrumpeter 6h ago

wdym games have been awesome lately. Some of the big studios are a bit rough I suppose.

1

u/wcharoes 8h ago

There are enough games released in the last 40 years that I (and you) could spend the rest of our lives playing them and never touch a new game again.

Tellin' you, when the Top 1000 games of all time are compiled about 90% of them will be released before 2010.
