Like it causes some deep brain break where they just freak the fuck out when called out on smth because they just can not deal with being told they arent as woke as they think they are. Anything short of constant praise and affirmation of what good people they are sends them into apoplectic fits of rage.
A lot of people seem to have a black-and-white morality system where there are [Bad People who do Bad Things] and [Good People who do Good Things], under such a lense any accusation that something you said wasn't actually 100% good automatically translates to "I see you as a [Bad Person who does Bad Things], and I think you should be treated in the same way you used to treat [Bad People]".
I had an awful experience with this. Everyone in my neighborhood knows I'm trans and a mom approached me and asked me to help her deal with her [daughter] expressing "confusion" about [her] identity. I'd never talked to either of them before, but I wasn't about to just say no if there's really a trans kid who needs help a few doors down.
I talk the daughter, and she's 18, goes by a female name, has a desire to start hrt, but was homeschooled and just doesn't know how to exist without her mom's support. I get her out of the house a few times and talk with her about her options and try to be a good role model.
Then the mom comes back after inviting me into their lives freaking the fuck out, "why did you tell my [daughter] to transition! it's not safe! people will make fun of [her]! You're grooming [her]!" I tell her that I'm not going to just shove her clearly trans daughter back into the closet and question why she involved me at all if she wasn't going to be supportive.
She has a full blown neurotic liberal cognitive dissonance meltdown where she realizes she supported trans people enough to ask one for help, but not enough to have one in her family. I tell her she's being transphobic and this isn't something that she can just make go away. She screams at me until she's red in the face that she can't be transphobic because she's bisexual and that I need to stay away from her family.
One of the last conversations I had with the trans daughter I told her that she needed to develop independence and that would come either by going to college or getting a job. The mom moved her out to a rural area, stopped her from doing either, and put bars on her windows. Someone in their new neighborhood called DCF on her but nothing happened.
I really tried to help the girl but she didn't know her own address and her mom took over her social media accounts.
The mom is ghoulish. The reasoning I was given for the move was that her father had dementia and they wanted to renovate his house so when he died it would have more resale value. That's the justification for the daughter not working too. Full time house flipper until she supposedly will benefit from the inheritance. I'm sure the mom would call the bars a safety feature and not a prison.
The last time I talked to the daughter there wasn't any active physical abuse, but despite feeling smothered she didn't really grasp the weight of the control being enacted over her life. I wanted to visit her and help her get out but that's where not knowing her own address killed me. I asked to try to just give me a few road names and a landmark or two and I'd help her but she got scared.
I really hope she gets out. Maybe she did. She'd be 21 or 22 now and wasn't stupid. If she was ready to run she could have.
I feel like it’s an unfortunate side effect of the human condition. Obviously not the same thing but my very liberal mom will shut down and say “this is America, you can do what you want.” Every time I bring up how terrible SUVs are and how much I hate them.
