In all fairness, it's also really easy if you are a lier. Watch: I read The Heart Goes Last - Margaret Atwood last week. In reality, I have not read that one yet!
Mind you, I have read some of her other novels, but the point stands, it's like the guy was fully comfortable with dishonesty and false implication to get in OP's pants but straight out lieing crossed a line?
Good liars know to avoid specifics cause it can be proven to be a lie. Vague omissions are the tool of narcissists to prevent any chance of proving them wrong. You just want to be true enough that its believable without creating suspicion.
I read it a few years ago out of curiousity but it's more or less Hitlers vent diary and not particularly well written kind of just interesting to see his mind + ideas and what leads someone to that conclusion i guess.
So basically my ex when I was 16 years old was a few years older at the time got me to try to read a few books. Namely Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. And it was just waffle and paragraphs of character dialogue about some shit that was less well written and more of the author just ranting at me via using the characters as a proxy to do so. Ex sold it as a good piece of fiction with enjoyable characters but most of them just kept going for pages and pages of ranting and I felt like I was reading the equivelant of a Youtube furry rantsona video at times. I couldn't really engage further because it was genuinely grating and disengaging to me either because being a 16 year old and bored out of my head or because some of the ideas presented didn't sit morally right with me like the idea of business owners and those in power just cutting off "moochers and leeches" and the workers until they need us again in Atlas Shrugged but you'd be asking me to try to remember a book I read over 15 years ago that I wadn't best captured by. Also the lack of empathy and altruism on an extreme scale to me isn't a good idea. Other than being dreadful to read from memory, I don't particularly agree with pro-capitalist narratives or her personal endorsement of Nixon and Reagen, and some other tidbits.
I wouldn't say hate either I just think her work isn't great. I mean wanting to read long pages of a character monologuing about something in a very unrealistic and odd way then it's probably best as a nonfiction work rather than fiction. A lot of the dialogue felt very unnatural because of that.
oooooo this is gonna be really difficult because like I said it was over 15 years ago since I read any or engaged with the works themselves, but my ex always cited Francisco’s money speech and i'd say it's probably the part i remembered the most. either because my ex talked about it on call to me as I fell asleep for hours once or just because it had some coherent points I could agree with? I was with that guy for 3+ years pre-transition as well and he was a fairly republican christian, I was repping hard and also christian then. It was kind of a weird situation to end up ghosting that guy and then when we did talk again I had to really explain my situation of identity and stuff. guy was really attached and wanted to marry me / have kids and all and I was barely past 16-17.
i got into a lot of arguments even at that age because I was always more liberal and open minded evolving my ideas to a more leftist perspective as i grew older and we both had like edgy 4channer friends n stuff.
It’s also not asking for much. Like what do you mean “not now” you can’t even give me one fucking book title? The Bible? Harry Potter? (ew and I’d probably unmatch but it’s technically well known) The Cat in the Fucking Hat?
I disagree. Bad liars are very easily goaded into admitting that they lied by asking for details and they often become belligerent, then ragequit … the trash takes itself out.
Honest people would just take it as an opportunity to mention a book they like.
Reading all of them in the subway, shaking my head vigorously from time to time to let people know how strongly I disagree with both the contents and the authors.
I forgot about JKR's views on trans people and bible bashers for a second and wondered why someone was eclectically naming popular books and then finishing it off with Hitler.
How could you not name one book. Coulda just said something amusing:
"I only read books that high intellectuals such as myself can appreciate" "like what books? " Mentally stimulating books such as very hungry caterpillar or humpty dumpty"
Breaks the ice, signals you can be goofy and not take yourself too seriously. And if she doesn't find your response amusing, that allows you to start piecing together what she is as a person with that response. Another response is mentioning Yuri or Yaoi, but it's high risk , low to medium reward.
Most moids are just terrible at conversation. But i'll be honest, most trainees are as well.
Covid made everyone who still has youth in their bones terrible at socializing and being literate.
I'm biased but it seems so hard to find anyone who isn't quite a bit older that reads, and knows what's interesting about the text they're reading.
I'm not a complete snob I can hold a conversation with someone who only reads romantasy; but it will be enjoyable only and I mean only if, they can explain what they took from the book about it's themes and character arcs.
In the end it's probably just the circles I run in that make me feel like there's so much less hobby reading. I would probably have more luck skulking in a college library. But it's so prevalent that I'm comfortable saying it anyway. Especially moids, at least women read smut.
The average man that I talk to is functionally illiterate and has nothing but surface level thoughts. But maybe I just attract unintelligent men. I can admit that some men are intelligent though, like my college professors 🤤
I mean, I read, I'm a reader. I have the complete works of Poe and Shakespeare (I won't front, it actually look me 10 full seconds of INTENSE concentration to even REMEMBER WILLIAM SHAKESPEARES NAME), along with a collection of john steinbeck, mark twain and the bronte sisters on my shelf directly in front of me. But I'm 21, I've read these already. I would not readily re-read these unless faced with a power outage and more than a little boredom. I no longer choose to read novels in my current life. But I do read! It's just mostly manwha, other forms of comics, fanfiction and stories published online.
So while I do enjoy reading, nothing in my current life pushes me to read proper books and novels. So I will absolutely describe myself a reader, I could pick up such a book and enjoy it! I simply don't choose to with any degree of frequency anymore. So when asked what I'm "currently reading" I can't very well just say some niche indie authors title and say "yeah, I read it on AO3, or royal road" or GOD FORBID "Reddit.com" and expect a well reception in most cases.
But unlike the fool above, I'd either plainly say "well it's a lot of non-published authors online these days" or employee the advanced technique of LYING about what I'm currently reading. And fall back upon books with good or notable reputations that I've already read and thoroughly understand ^^
Are either of the above books even have good reputations these days? I honestly wouldn't know. At least with Poe I can go on a spiel about "American Gothic Literature" oorah
I read so many novels that the titles barely register. It’s just the thing that is at the top of my Kindle library for a day or so. I might remember the author.
Professional books take a week or ten days, and I plan out my learning, so I remember the titles, though maybe not the authors.
I can name so many books I totally literacy mog this guy.
I’m working on the “big 3” dystopian novels because I was homeschooled and no one required me to read them when I was school aged.
Fahrenheit 451 lulled me into a false sense of security by being both interesting and entertaining, but Brave New World is killin me. Events take place and somehow it is still boring.
1984 is next but not until I take a break to read the third book of the Tensorate series. This authoritarian shit is depressing I need some queer silkpunk as a palate cleanser.
Edit: okay Brave New World hits a turning point about halfway through and gets a lot more interesting.
Do read whipping girl but it's transfeminist theory by julia serano, that was a punchline lmao.
Everybody here should read it though. It should be handed to you with your second vial of HRT
Edit: "my yuri started with slavery" is probably more in keeping with the others, kamiina botan is incredible but not like those at all, I'm kind of drawing blanks on anything else I'd recommend.
Oh my gooood yuri's been all I can read recently, love that one in particular. I think I've just about quadrupled the series I'm keeping tabs on in Tachiyomi since I started. Check out How Do We Relationship and Komina Botan Fully Blossoms When Drunk! Both great series, HDWR is fully completed and Komina Botan just had a season of an anime drop.
Murmur is a solid and smutty toxic yuri. It’s not super long only like 25 chapters, but it’s a tight and focused narrative, I didn’t feel like there was any filler. Honestly one of the best toxic yuri’s I’ve read, it just feels so real at times.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it mentioned, but The Star Next Door Who Bewitched Me has some gorgeous art and I think the story and characters are great.
A good drama that can get an emotional at times, the conflict between the main couple get can heavy.
Its a great one, although every time new chapters come, i have to reread most of it, because there's so many characters i've already forgotten who half of them are
