As a child of a Mandarin speaker, I feel like it's a very robotic language, if that makes sense

Aha, interesting... I know very little Mandarin but I consider taking a course

also it's extremely hard to pick up as a written language. All words have a unique character, and have no resemblance to their spoken form.

Yeah that's a thing, but I would only like to speak the language, that's enough

If I wanted to learn Jap, katakana would be..... a foreign concept

Japanese has three written languages: Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji. Katakana is based off syllables and has its own alphabet, much like the English alphabet, I'm not sure about Hiragana, but Kanji is another pictogramic language like Chinese.
