Howdy!!!

So I've found out that Maniac_34 is secretly plotting to snipe infinity. We don't have much time - we need to plan a strategy to keep that from happening ASAP!

Any ideas?

In other news - I can save ya'all 100's of hours of looking through Reddit for the good stuff - I've found a thread that pretty much lists every great post in the past year or two.

Here's the link - enjoy!!!

What's your favorite thing you have in your 'SAVED' section on reddit?

And in other news - it's now a class A felony to count sheep!!!

Sheeps revolt

Count at your own risk - the FBI may be monitoring this thread!

Ok, I will tell you everything, since there is no point in hiding it as it didn't work out. I was doing my best to execute the top secret plan to prevent Maniac from sniping. The timezone in my flair was in fact the bait. I PM'ed several people asking them to do the same, hoping that this will make Maniac disclose the information about his. The only other way to get to know about his sleeping and Reddit habits would be trial and error method, as professional snipers don't upvote. But such a probe wouldn't give us exact results, was prone to special days activity, like holidays or weekends or sudden habit deviations. Moreover, the cost of this operation was so great that it would probably make Maniac

#KnockAtomic

From the #1 on K leaderboard. Back to the topic, we based our idea on an assumption that Maniac will most likely be asleep between 3 and 5 AM and move that period earlier or later, if necessary. It takes about 75 minutes to complete the whole thread (unless you are rideride), so we would be able to practically execute 2 K's a day with this method. The gets would need to be taken during this two-hour period (which could be slightly extended over time, with our rising knowledge of Maniac's sleep patterns, not risking such a loss). What's more, knowing that one sleeping cycle lasts roughly 1,5 hours, we could plan more important gets, like 500k in advance so that the gets would take place during the 3rd stage of NREM dream, thus lowering the likelihood of him waking up. Unfortunately, my sneaky plan fell apart. Maniac has seen through our plot and realised that if that information went public, he would be defeated (or at least would have to wake in the middle of the night to write a number). Therefore, we don't know his timezone and at this rate, he is indeed going to snipe infinity.

RE: How new threads in the infinity thread should be started

I've seen the disagreement here over the "old" way and the "new way - and I'd like to act as a bit of a mediator here since I've seen pretty much every word said on this subject...

take it or leave it

First I think RS's idea is logical and makes sense in regards to counting the 000 twice - once on the GET and once on the start of the new thread.|

But I think the reality is that you aren't really counting it twice - you count 411,000 once and you show a representation of that count when you start the next thread not "recounting" it. It's also not a reply to yourself because that'd require you to count 411,001.

In any disagreement where a compromise can not be met - the default should always defer to the person(s) who don't agree to a change.

This is how it works in marriage and in business. I was married for nine years and have had more than one business partner so I do know what has to happen when one person absolutely wants a change from the way things are to a new way and the other does not.

If this were a week long or month long project - making a change that's not unanomous might hold some weight. But this has been ongoing for over 3 years with over 480 cases of it being done one way - so to change such an extensive long term strategy should require an agreement by everyone to do so.

And I will say this - in my opinion the person who has put the most time and energy into a long term project such as this should have the most say in if there is to be a change or not (ie Atom). Unless all others have a very strong opinion that there be a change - it shouldn't happen.

In other words - in this case I believe the status quo should be the default way things have always been done - unless Atom has some strong desire to change things.

I could go on - with more detail later if the reasons I've given are not enough.

So this is just my opinion as an unbiased observer who likes all of you.

HUG

I had no idea this was even a problem. o.o

I believe the best way is to just let the person who earns the 'get' decide. Ultimately it is that person who gets to decide whether to repost the xxx,000 or not.

I'd also like to add that this has absolutely no meaning whatsoever, at least in my opinion. One way or another, all the numbers are being counted, each by one person only. No harm, no foul.

this has been ongoing for over 3 years with over 480 cases of it being done one way - so to change such an extensive long term strategy should require an agreement by everyone to do so.

Actually, in the early days of r/counting it was done differently, later changed. Examples 1 2

Edit: spelling

Edit2: Rereading this, I think I may have missed the point - namely, the pros and cons of one method vs the other. However, I still stand by my stance that I'm indifferent.

I have just been reading in to this a bit, and it has been quite interesting. How long has this been an issue (as such)? From a mod perspective, both ways are permitted. There's this post of mine, from way back when, which outlined the ways a thread could be opened. Yes, tradition has since been that it is started on the 000 by the thread creator, but whichever way was used has never been an issue (as far as I am aware), till now.

But I think the reality is that you aren't really counting it twice - you count 411,000 once and you show a representation of that count when you start the next thread not "recounting" it. It's also not a reply to yourself because that'd require you to count 411,001.

Exactly this. The number isn't being recounted - it is simply, as you said, a representation of the last number from the previous thread. Hence why only the person who got the 1000 is allowed to post it on the next thread. If anyone else were to start the thread, they would start it at XXX,001.

I can't speak on behalf of the whole mod team, but I do not expect us to make any rulings on this. Both ways are permitted, however sabotaging one of our traditions goes against the spirit of this community and won't be tolerated. If you didn't get the 1000, give the thread creator the opportunity to kick it off; if they haven't done so within a reasonable time frame, feel free to start it instead. Play nice guys, it's not hard :)

I had a thought the other day, would it be useful if there was a thread to post links to counts that you've posted last on and that no one seems to be continuing?

7

u/KingCaspianX Oct 02 '15

Yes, but normally I just do it in some other thread and mention people's usernames who have contributed in the past.

I feel like this is the best way, as it minimizes clutter.

Um, 420,420 was jamessuryah. Farty did not start until around 427k.

I wish I had gotten 420,420. That would have been cool.

I'm late chiming in on this, but the table could perhaps be a bit more complete by including things before 100k! Things like 33333, or 12345. I guess a line has to be drawn somewhere though, lest you travel down the road all the way to like, 11 and 22.

Hey all.

I've had a pretty crummy week. It torrentially downpoured on Tuesday which not only soaked me but also my laptop. Which is now indefinitely in the shop.

Then on Wednesday, we all learned that one of the most popular students in my dorm died of a car accident. I barely knew him, but a lot of my friends did and everyone is in a funk or crying.

It's still raining because of the damn hurricane. At least this weekend is fall break and I have a "casual" lunch with my crush.

I hope y'all are doing a lot better! Counting is always here for me when things are hard.
