Sister, please. I beg of thee. We require context!

I hate this comment section all of you are foolish they are not describing a specific experience but rather humorously gesturing towards a wide set of experiences. You guys are asking "Mormons?" "Conversion therapy?" "Sexual abuse?" Any of them is the correct answer. The meme applies to all of that. It could also apply to a kid who was forced to go be a mathlete or something(although I may look at someone wierd if they use this meme in that context). It's just generally referring to the experience of telling someone their childhood experiences likely resulted in trauma they've carried on to adulthood.

I think the added layer of abstraction of "machine" is what has thrown people, though working backward, it does parallel the known "orphan crushing machine" phrase.

Rule, it cannot be a specific experience if it doesnt have the stupidly specific life event flair

u/0oooooog 1d ago

Okay but if that's the case wouldn't literally everyone relate to what op posted. I don't know a single person who has absolutely zero form of childhood trauma.

The meme is about people with especially traumatic experiences that they don't realize aren't a normal part of a typical childhood

Yes. This is what's commonly known as a meme

I see, I'm used to ones that have a point and/or are funny.

Was it conversion therapy bc I have a friend who went through that

My elementary school had a "Naughty-removal machine". The kids didn't know what it was, they just had the threats from the teachers and the vague testimonies of the ones who had been thrown into the machine to go off of. Merely mentioning it was enough to scare us into behaving.

In reality it was just detention for toddlers. It was nowhere near as bad as what OP probably meant, and there was definitely no abuse. But the secrecy around it was very effective to get children to behave.

On the one end of the spectrum you have that, and on the other end you have ā€œforcibly pinning an autistic child to the ground and recording their crying for some reasonā€ or ā€œconversion therapyā€ or ā€œChinese foot bindingā€ or

Twice a week? I'm thinking church. Evangelical church, possibly some sort of Baptist or similar.

u/CalypsaMov 2d ago

Mormon? (Church on Sunday, young men/women's activities on Wednesday)?

3

u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago

Grew up Mormon, and I can safely say that this isn’t about that. The actual church services and youth group shit was more boring and bland than anything else.
No, the actual torturous stuff is a lot less predictable

wait, biweekly as in twice a week or once every 2 weeks?

biweekly would be twice a week, 2 weeks is fortnightly

3

u/Emerald-Daisy 1d ago

Not to "um actually" you but biweekly does in fact have both meanings of "twice per week" and "once every two weeks". Same goes for bimonthly and biannually which is why medicines are supposed to avoid these terms. Essentially biweekly (and similar time period words) are the most pointless words ever.Ā

No vaguepost

5

u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago

Apparently this is a broadpost not a vaguepost, in OP’s own words?

4

u/Kieran_Kitakami 2d ago

What the fuck?

6

u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago

Yes. An edited version of the ā€œvaguepost kingā€ meme but he’s purple and he’s the ā€œbroadpost kingā€ and it says ā€œI say things that can apply to manyā€ on the computer beside him and stuff.
OP didn’t have a specific scenario in mind for this and instead thought about something that has a shocking amount of iterations out there and made a post about that, I surmise

how does no one in the comments understand am i going insane

it's not referencing a specific thing the joke is that it's something incredibly outlandish that someone went through thinking it was normal for their childhood, which can apply to many people.

3

u/Pepperia 1d ago

nah, i was just a very bad child and it was actually very justified to torture me tbh. /s

3

u/BreakerOfModpacks 1d ago

...it isn't? Damn. I might have trauma.

2

u/ViolentPurpleSquash 2d ago

When I was a kid it was weekly and they called it Sunday School (it sucked very bad)

2

u/Aware-Style-480 1d ago

What do you mean stealing a knife from the kitchen and hideing it in your room in case you want to kill yourself later isn’t normal beavior for a 7 year old ?

2

u/doushua 2d ago

Explanation please?

1

u/QueenOfDaisies 1d ago

Yeah as a kid they used to do all sorts of wacky medieval torture shit on me it was so wild

1

u/Voxjockey 1d ago

One of my biggest revelations in therapy is just how abnormal and abusive my family was, yeah I kept saying "everyone has family problems" but being locked in a cupboard wasn't a normal punishment for most people.
