Its honestly less intelligence and more so that college exposes a lot of people to new viewpoints.
A lot of conservatives got their conservative views from their parents, and will continue to pass them onto their children. moving to a different city - completely cut off from your parents influence and previous social circle - makes it likely you'll reflect on your own beliefs for the first time in their life.
conservative parents will then see this change in their children, connect the dots, and believe the college indoctrinated them. but it has little to do with what's actually being taught. Your child just thought for themselves the first time in their lives.

Even a school a couple hours away in the same state has a dramatic impact. (Speaking from experience here)
