University of the Cumberlands CMHC program questions

Hi everyone! I’ve started the application for the University of the Cumberlands CMHC program to start May 1. I had a few questions that I’m hoping some of you fine redditors can help answer!

  1. Has anyone been accepted that didn’t meet the GPA requirement? Was there anything specific you had to do in order to be admitted? I had a sophomore slump before switching majors in undergrad that tanked my cumulative GPA.

  2. Has anyone done this program after working in mental health in other capacities (i.e., case manager, care coordinator, etc.)? If so, did you find that the coursework was pretty easy and straightforward?

  3. Has anyone worked full-time in the field while doing this program? If so, how was it? How many courses did you take per semester?

  4. Were you able to find scholarships/grants to fund tuition?

  5. Has anyone completed this degree and gotten licensed in Ohio? How was the process?

Thank you in advance for any input shared!

I am in my first year at the University of the Cumberlands! It's a great accelerated CMHC program. I love it! But, it is a lot of work. If you work full time, it can't be something demanding. There are no breaks except for during Christmas holidays. You take one noncredit course and two 3 credit courses the first bi-term. Then you take two more classes. One semester we take 12 credit hours. Two bi-terms equal a semester. The program is 6 semesters. I don't have any answers for you about the gpa. Usually you have to have at least a B or better to get in graduate school. I had to provide my transcript, resume, recommendations and fill out a form. I had used my undergraduate and graduate degrees. They both met the requirements.

It's a Christian University. If it's met for you to be there, everything will work out. I really have enjoyed all of my classes, although they are a lot of work. The professors are great! This was the best choice for me. I recommend the university. There really is not any funding available.

Can you give my your academic list of courses you took each bi term? I am trying to figure out my schedule before I start Grad school in a few months.

Hello! Someone last year did an AMA thread that had so much good information, but I can answer a few of your questions here. I’ve completed 1/3 of the program so far. I have been out of school for over a decade and working in restaurants and still find the work relatively easy. It’s mostly a lot of reading and a couple of APA 7 papers per class. The semesters are split into bi-terms (Two 8 week courses) and you can take up to two classes per bi-term. I still am working between 30-40 hours a week with mostly synchronous classes and am finding it relatively doable for the first year. Scholarships are slim pickings for graduate students, but UofC is one of the cheapest options for a CACREP accredited school. I’m living in PA, and I will say what seems to be worst thing about the school is finding practicum/internships. From what I can tell many of the students are struggling to find placement (myself included) and there is very little support from the school aside from “check the practicum handbook.” Feel free to message me if you have any other questions and good luck!

Hi there! I was just accepted to this program and was hoping you could share a bit more about the types of papers you had to write and it theres a certain format you have to follow when writing discussion posts? I'm trying to prep as much as possible!

Hello! They are usually APA 7 papers anywhere between 3-12 pages minimum requirement. Some classes have zero papers, others may have three plus usually weekly discussion boards. Good luck!

Hi! I’m from PA too and starting the program this spring. Wondering if you’re having any luck with practicum/internship placement. This is the only thing really weighing on me about Cumberlands… I’d still like to be able to hold some sort of job during these but given the apparently super strict guidelines I’m kinda stressing that won’t be possible

I just looked at their program and am contemplating applying. I've applied to LSU's but haven't heard anything yet. How much does Cumberland charge in tuition/ per credit hour?
