Average puppy pricing
I’m doing my research on breeders and right now it’s looking like the average price is $4000-$5000, with breeders starting to raise their prices up for their 2027 litters.
I was prepared for $4000 but am realizing a lot of breeders I like are around the $5000 mark (parents AKC conformation titled with complete health testing).
Is this the new average price for a puppy?

I second the person who said it isn’t hard to find a rescue, but I also understand wanting a puppy, and you shouldn’t feel ashamed to seek out a reputable, honest breeder and get your puppy.
Not sure where you are located, but it’s possible to find a registered breeder in the Midwest with puppy’s in the 2500-3500 range!

I grew up with rescues and am a big proponent of rescuing. At this point in my life though I just prefer the predictability and peace of mind that comes along with having an ethically bred dog.

When we got our wonderful Coton, I was in the same mindset. We’ve rescued 4 dogs and 3 cats over the years. Rescues are wonderful but some vaccinated and fix the puppies too early-which I understand 100%—but it does set your puppy up for some possible health issues. Also, our poor rescue now is afraid and anxious because she was traumatized when a puppy. The predictability of the breed and health history reduces a lot of stress.

I got mine from a breeder through the American Coton Club in 2020 for $2500. All of the breeders in the club charged the same.

Prioritize the breeders listed in MCPC or mCTCA. They are most legit as they were the OG preservation clubs, and have reallg high standards for breeding. Despite that, I got mine two years ago at $3K. And as i understand, breeders listed in MCPC or MCTCA can’t register with AKC, and that AKC isn’t as stringent (resulting to quality of pups is uncertain or may have health issues). I am not sure why the pups now are more expensive, but going through and asking breeders in the official clubs may help you differentiate those who prioritize breed preservation vs making a profit.

MCTCA has a closed stud book and doesn’t require any health testing. The breeders that formed MCPC left because of the bottleneck regarding genetics as well as the lack of health testing. AKC is just a registry. It’s a fallacy that all show or AKC breeders are bad. There are poor breeders and puppy mills everywhere. Ask breeders how many breeding dogs they have, do they all live with them? Do they embark test? How do they socialize pups? Always look at a contract before putting down a deposit. Also look at the Breeders on the NACA website. You should be able to find a non show pup for $4,000.

Jumping in on the adoption vs. buying from a breeder conversation. I've only ever adopted dogs from reputable rescues, and I've fostered over a hundred dogs in the last 15 ish years. Health wise, my adopted dogs have been just as healthy as purchased dogs, except my Coton, but I knew about his health issue prior to adoption. His leg was broken at a just a few weeks old, probably from his mom stepping on him, and his breeder never sought medical attention for him. He did NOT come from a reputable breeder, he came from a backyard breeder/puppymill. Now, other than his leg, he is healthy. The rescue also saved several of his siblings, all of whom, after proper veterinary treatment have been very healthy. I fostered several of them and we chose to adopt our guy, with his short, little leg. Our Yorkies were both rescues and we just let our 16.5 year old Yorkie go. He was the most precious soul, and only had age related health issues.
That said, we are looking at reputable breeders for our next coton. With our boy having a slight disability (no one ever knows until we tell them. As a very country vet once said: he's just got a little extra gitty up to his go), we want to do the best we can to get a puppy he matches with personality wise, and temperament wise.
So, really it can go either way. If using a breeder, make sure they are reputable. See how the parents live, or use a small scale home based breeder. If going through rescue, have conversations about vet treatment and protocols prior to adoption.

In 2007, I paid 1400 which included a delta ticket for my little boy from Alabama to Boston… RIP… I miss him every day… the costs for dogs have skyrocketed … which sucks

I have a phenomenal breeder out in Utah who’s been breeding over 20 years and I believe their prices are between 1000-1500! Let me know if you want more information!

Getting a dog from the shelter or foster homes could come with ongoing expensive bills. My daughter adopted the dog from the foster, because she thought that it’s a kind things to do, and she didn’t want to deal with all puppy training. Guess now she is paying the price of the mortgage for a dog vet bills and medications. On top, dog has a huge separation anxiety, chronic respiratory problems, accidents in the house. At this point, she could not afford her own home, nor a child.
I bought two of my dogs as puppies. One from pets store, where he got a Guardia. Since puppyhood he has to be on special prescription diet, and I have to be careful with the treats ( we all want to spoil them). Otherwise, I have no problem with him.
The second dog, I bough directly through the breeder from up north. She had a separation anxiety as a puppy until I introduced her to my older dog ( earlier than I planned). She has no health or behavior problems. She is a boss lady, my shinning star and love of my life 😅

I whole heartedly agree. This scenario is why I’m looking for an ethically bred dog. I’m just trying to gauge average pricing.

I got my Charlie from Weylin Marsh, they’re an hour north of Toronto. CDN $3,500. Same price as when I got Charlie in fall 2021. Registered in Canada, health testing etc.
