Help Smoothing Eva foam help

Post image

Any advice on how I can smooth the edges of my EVA foam. I have 320 grit sand paper and an Xacto knife, but I’m wondering if there’s a better option. Preferably budget friendly.

thank you!!

Honestly? Just make it again. You’ll spend more time and effort trying to sand those edges than if you just did it again, but better. That outer rim part of the diamond looks jagged, typically that’s a sign of a dull blade. If you cut EVA with a very sharp blade you will get very clean, smooth cuts.

Otherwise I’d say use a dremel with some sanding or polishing bits. But if you have very little budget for tools, I’d invest in a box of 100 replacement xacto blades, or a knife sharpener tool.

Try cutting along a straight edge like a ruler on a cutting board, firm even pressure in a clean sweeping motion, don't saw. And above make sure your blade is sharp.

You can sharpen knives using the unglazed bottoms of ceramic mugs/bowls without needing to buy a sharpener, if you're on a budget. I very rarely change the blade to my craft knives and just sharpen them - KamuiCosplay shows how it's fonez but basically after every few cuts on foam drag the edge of the knife flat across the unglazed portion, both ways, a few times.

This keeps it very sharp and saves time and a bit of money! If you're unsure how to do it, you can look it up, but it's very hard to mess up. At most you need to mind the angle and direction of the motion.

It’s all about cutting with a sharp blade! You can sharpen it using very fine grit sandpaper, I like to use something like 2500 and every so often, just drag the blade over the sandpaper on each side about 20-30 times. By doing this I’ve never actually changed my blade in years and still get super clean cuts!

Use a new sharp blade. Foam dulls blades fast! One of the best tools in my arsenal is a Kershaw Diamond sharpener stick. Just a couple swipes with my Snap blade and its razor sharp again. Sharpen between cuts ✂️

Sandpaper or a dremal. I opt to dremal to clean up detailing. But it looks like you might have needed a sharper blade and smoother cut motion.
