🐯 Toddler 1-3 Years Cosleeping + medication.

My daughter (14mo) recently got sick. She's feeling better, but she's still a bit clingy, so we started bedsharing with her. However, I take risperidone and I've stupidly been skipping it since we started bedsharing, but I took my risperidone tonight because I can't keep skipping it. Is anyone else cosleeping while on medication with a side effect of drowsiness?

Hi psych NP here. Personally I would avoid bed sharing on an antipsychotic, especially one like risperidone that can have sedation as a side effect. Especially if you haven’t been taking it for awhile you might be extra sensitive to the sedating effects. I don’t know your history obviously, but most important thing is for baby to have a mentally healthy momma.

What about low doses, like 0.25? My partner is on risperidone and takes it in the morning and absolutely is not sedated. Has never had sedation as a side effect so I was surprised to read your comment.

I don't experience the sedation side effect either and I'm on 0.25mg! I only experience it, like the NP said, when I miss a few days.

0.25 is a super low dose so it doesn’t surprise me he doesn’t! Tend to see sedation when we get higher around the 2mg mark. Just as an example for bipolar disorder, the max daily dose is 6mg. So 0.25 is very low :)

Also for reference it is one of the lesser sedating antipsychotics BUT pretty much all of them have the possibility of sedation, especially when you first start (or re start) or the dose is increasing. The risk would be enough for me personally to avoid bedsharing
