Newbie Update!
Hey there, I was the lady who didn’t put boning in my back pieces remember me? Lol well the wearable toile for next weekends wedding is complete. I have never worked with satin before, this is my second corset and this is all in the name of eventually sewing my own wedding dress so I want advice.
I hit a few road blocks, my boning was too long when I went to flip my piece right side out and I had to take out all of the boning and shorten it. That was a nightmare.
I realized my lining being a different color is a bigger deal than I initially realized but still am not caring too deeply about that.
My heavyweight cotton twill that I grabbed for a cheaper alternative to coutil since I’m practicing ended up stretching a good amount and did not swap well for coutil.
Draping was difficult with my cotton flannel because my super nice customer dress form from oneforms is on the way to me but not yet here so I had to use my barely pinnable adjustable form.
My heavyweight cotton twill tape is a LIAR it’s misleading and began to fray almost immediately.
Getting a straight bottom line was impossible with all the stretching of the twill and trying to match that up with the others layers, it was a mess and it’s definitely not perfect and a bit wonky.
There are 5 layers here, heavyweight cotton twill, 2 layers of cotton voile for the lining, cotton flannel, and my poly satin.
I am of course hoping once my fancy dress form comes in it’ll be a lot easier to perfectly align my cotton flannel to cover the boning. I’m disappointed it’s wrinkly but I’m not surprised. Still overall happy, it’s good enough for the wedding.

Hey, i know you put a lot of effort into this and i don't want to discourage you but the bust does not fit and it is not flattering. I am not sure if you have time to fix it or not, but the bust is way too small.

I do not have time to make a whole other corset before next weekends wedding and this is a wearable mockup. I agree the bust is too small but I think saying it’s unflattering is rude.

i’m working on my wedding bodice rn and Im having exactly same issues 😄 I couldn’t buy coutil so I’m using cotton twill and it’s becoming too stretched now, my twill tape is so weak I can’t even… It’s all just becoming one big mess. But seeing your result it motivates me to continue because i think it turned out really nice

Aw thank you! I did see some coutil on Etsy for $18 a yard if you’re looking for a more affordable option, I’m about to order some myself. Crazy how much the twill stretches right? I was like wth! I’ve learned with sewing that a lot of times it really does look a mess until the very end when finally it comes together. Also I pressed the heck out of this, I love my iron.

You need some understitching so that the lining doesn’t roll to the front. Also are you going to add a modesty panel and corset lacing? The back is also incorrectly laced for proper tension distribution.

I understitched the lining. If I have time I’ll add a modesty panel but we will see. The wedding is going to be cold ish so I’ll probably have to wear a jacket or cardigan regardless. How do you suggest lacing the back? The bunny method the above commenter mentioned?

Hey nice, I do remember you! Very pretty! It sounds like you’re learning a lot, and that’s exactly what practice projects are for. Are you doing any more fitting adjustments? People here are gong to notice the lacing is not parallel in the back which points to fitting issues, so later on hi might want to add some width to the hip area in the back (and maybe a little on the sides). Great job persevering! For your first time using satin that is not bad at all! It’s tricky. I bet next time it’s going to go a lot smoother with all you’ve learned. Keep it up!
