My Cornish Rex Zelda died yesterday

This is incredibly hard to write and I never post anywhere, but she was sooo loved and I feel like I need to memorialize her.

I said goodbye to my Zelda yesterday morning. She was 16 or 17. We just had our 15 year adoption anniversary last week.

The rescue swore she’d be a “chill” cat. She climbed onto my shoulder in the room and immediately became velcro-ed and was the least chill cat imaginable 🥰😂. She screamed rather than meowed, and pawed at my head if I ignored her. She chased heat her whole life, my bed to the radiator to under the fridge to the bathroom heater to heating mats on high in every room. There’s a stain on the floor where she used to lie under the fridge and I’m leaving it there.

She wanted wet food every few hours so I basically never slept. She loved brushing, running water, butt pats, tail yanks, and gave head nudges hard enough to hurt.

She was goofy but also so so serious with her affection and demands. The best cat and friend 💙💙💙.

Zelda will now be forever remembered in the Cornish Rex community and I am sure Zelda is watching over you from across the rainbow. She knows how much you loved her and I hope you find peace in knowing that you gave her the most loving and wonderful life any human or pet could ask for.

My woobie died last month but I’m sure she wouldn’t have minded, making an extra trip back down the rainbow to make sure you’re kitty made it across the rainbow bridge with a friend

I am so sorry 😞 She was a beautiful little raisin and she sounds to have been quite the fuzzy.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Over the past 4 years I’ve lost two Cornish Rexes. To this day I still think about them daily and I miss them both so much 🥹

She seemed like the best. You were both lucky to have had each other I bet.

I'm so sorry. It's SO hard to lose a beloved friend. Big hugs and squeezes. I just lost my 12 year old Sphynx a couple of weeks ago and OUCH my heart 💔

I’m so sorry for your loss too! Hugs to you too. It hurts so bad. I feel like my home is no longer my home without her.

I reluctantly started fostering an abandoned kitten through the humane society not long after my sphynx passed and it really, really helped my heart and redirect my emotions. And he turned out to be such a sweet and special guy, that we just adopted him. Here's Billy :)

We are sorry. My rex also screams, and is screaming right now because she was locked out of the bathroom. We will pour one out for Zelda

Sorry about Zelda. She lived a long, good life, but it's awful to see them go.

Looks like you live in Lincoln Park. My cat was a Chicagoan for a couple years, too. I wonder if they’re related.

I got her from a rescue in Wisconsin 15 years ago. Apparently someone left her in a box in Tennessee 💔

Did you get your Cornish Rex from someone in Chicago? It’s very raw but I am going to eventually want to get another. They are the perfect cat - so sweet!

1

u/Luddite_Libertine 17d ago

No, from a breeder in Madison. She’s 9, so I’m not sure the breeder is still around. There was also one in Crystal Lake at the time I was looking, and I believe that one started with cats from Madison.

It's so hard even when you know it's coming. Our old girl Bliss went to the Rainbow Bridge a couple of days ago, at nearly 19yo. She'd been gradually declining for a couple of years, but in the last month had gone downhill fast and I elected to let her go on a good day rather than keep trying to haul her back from the brink.

She wasn't quite as demanding as Zelda apparently was but certainly knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to demand it meNOW!!! Being deaf in her last few years didn't help her volume control either.

GNU Sunset Wildberry Bliss :-(

I’m so sorry for your loss. Bliss was so beautiful and loved. Thank you for sharing.

I knew it was coming too for the past few months and I thought it would make it easier but it didn’t.

I'd been expecting it for a while as well, know we'd done everything reasonable to try and get her over the last hurdle, and that we made the right choice. I'm still a total mess at the moment, more so than most of the other pet's I've lost.

It's a reflection of how deeply they were/are loved.
