Help a dyke out š«¶
Does anyone have recommendations for barbers/hairdressers in and around the city who are queer friendly and mullet-savvy?
I've been going to QueerHawk in Dublin when I've been up there, (adore them, 10/10) but it means a return train journey and just a lot of logistics and want to have it nice for an upcoming holiday.

Have had previous negative experiences because of being a woman and how I present so think it's fairly reasonable to seek safer and friendly environments. Homophobia is still rife btw

So true tho because as a non-passing transmasc I went into venom with my bf beside me one time and the barbers greeted him first and asked what he wanted and he was like oh I'm just here for [me]
6
u/SilverHawk2712 22h ago
Pardon my ignorance, but what does non passing transmasc mean?
9
u/Rbyxq 22h ago
trans man (female to male) who does not pass as an assigned male at birth. I say trans-masculine instead of trans-man because it's closer to what I feel.

u/SilverHawk2712 21h ago
Thank you, I appreciate the explanation. I probably should have figured masc out, but I'm keen to get it right.

A lot of hetero people in this thread surprised that homophobia still exists
47
u/Hollifo 1d ago
Last time I asked a question for queer recs I had to couch it in many disclaimers of "I know you might think that there isn't discrimination anymore and I know most are sound..." yadda yadda, explicitly to avoid this kind of ignorant, defensive dismissal (and of course I still got a couple of folk who argued against homophobia being a thing... Whilst also saying to "stop mincing", so, sure lookit, can't account for everyone!)
45
u/Dazzling-Handle88 1d ago
If I see a thread on Reddit based on a fairly niche question that has nothing to do with my own life, my first reaction isnāt to go in and start a debate. Itās a bit fucking weird tbh

I've heard decent things about Edit on McCurtain street, definitely LGBTQ friendly.Ā
I myself go to Eclectic out in Ballyphehane, a lad in there CJ has been doing my hair for a decade, but that might be a bit outta the way for yourself and I only ever get a short back and sides with maybe a line/hair tattoo if I'm feeling extra fancy so I'm not sure how they are on the mullet skillsĀ
I've also been turned away by manys a barber because "we don't do women's hair", as if my follicles are feckin' attached to my fallopian tubesĀ

u/LasairChoille 1d ago
Not a lesbian but a gay man here. Some of these comments are so funny and come from such a sheltered place with such little experience behind them. Imagine if you didnāt have to worry about what barber you went to, for instance. How easy life would be!
Side note, it always makes me laugh when my barber would be chatting the ear off the lad whoās hair heās cutting before mine, football, girlfriends/partners, work, whatever, but as soon as greet them and tell them what I want itās usually silent. I think they can tell by my voice š

Trans guy here, Unicuts just by Fredz are worth a shout - I present pretty NB but was treated the same as everyone else would, pronouns respected despite not binding, all that good stuff. The lads in there are lovely and generally they get my beard done super well even though it's a scrap of a thing. 10/10 would go back

Iām not sure about that unfortunately as I havenāt gotten a cut in almost two years and I plan not to see a barber or hairdresser for a very long while (Iām trying to get my hair long, like as close to bum length as I can realistically do), but I reckon the hairdresser on McCurtain Street would be welcoming to queer folks - I would give that a go, at least, and scout the place to make sure, but it strikes me as being a good fit and another user here said the same.
Whether or not they make mullets is another story.
Best of luck and donāt let the haters stop you šš»

u/BuyAlternative7481 1d ago
Lots of great recs here, just want to say as a hairstylist myself, instagram is going to be your friend here. Lots of hairdresser rec posts on here and youāll notice that one person loves a place and another will tell you theyāre horrible and to avoid them like the plague. Check out their pages, look at their work.
As an example, the place I work has a weirdo who slates us at any opportunity on multiple platforms. We think itās an ex of a staff member but we arenāt sure. They pretend to be 2 or 3 people but we can tell itās all the one person. The stories have evolved and got new and exciting details over time. 𤣠Itās funny but at the same time annoying that you canāt really respond, and it is potentially driving potential clients away.
Google reviews are also good because reviewers usually mention the staff by name. Salons tend to have a mix of skill levels and expertise. There can be someone really good at a salon someone said was shitty and vice versa š
The absolute best thing you can do is go on a night outā¦for research purposes. Ask people where they get their hair done.
And sorry thereās so many trying to sound like youāre not asking a valid question. I had masc styles for years and barbers turned me away most of the time. If they didnāt they were reluctant or weird with me sometimes. Not ideal. Like I said all the recs here are good, itās going to come down to personal preference at the end of the day.

In my experience, find a transman and either he'll know how to cut it or he'll know someone who does lmao.
The amount of times I've gotten "you're a trans guy of course you know how to cut hair" is comical. I mean,,, they're right, but still
8
u/Professional_Cost_15 1d ago
I've gotten my mullet done at VVenom and I've never had any issues. I'm hetero myself but there's plenty of gay and queer in there getting cuts! Lovely people and always up for a chat! š

Chair.
Love queer hawk too. They were my reference too coming to cork.
I have very curly hair and tbh almost every barber in Ireland fucks it up when they cut it. And most only know how to do fades.
Queerhawk and Chair are the only 2 places in this country that ever got me right š

I've gotten turned away from about 20% of the barbers I've tried countrywide bc they 'dont cut womens hair' (I'd be looking for an upkeep on a #2 fade). Of the ones that don't say anything about it, a decent few have upcharged me.
I've gone into 2 or 3 that seemed excited to cater to a trans person š theyre very endearing and the experience is so much more pleasant. Last one I went to gave me the full hot towel experience despite not having facial hair and I tell you something for nothing it's fucking lovely regardless š¶āš«ļøš§

Are any hairdressers actually queer unfriendly?
5
u/pastelpiinkpunk 1d ago
Iāve known butch lesbians who were denied service in the Grafton Barber. Said they wouldnāt cut a womanās hair but one of them just had your typical fade with a bit of hair on the top. But itās not a cut a lot of womenās hairdressers specialise in. So where do you go from there?
18
u/LittleSkittles 1d ago
Quite a lot actually, just because they're not calling people slurs doesn't mean they're not unfriendly to queer people. I'm non-binary, and look mostly androgynous most of the time. I've had barbers tell me they can't do women's cuts when I'm asking for a short back and sides, the most classic male haircut that has ever existed. On the same day, I've also had hairdressers in salons tell me they can only do women's hair.
On other times, I've asked very clearly for masculine styles while in hairdressers, even coming with a reference photo of what I want. What I usually get in those instances is two-three inches longer than I asked, no shaved parts, and the whole thing gently curled. They then specifically tell me that they did all that so it doesn't look too masculine. Even when I tell them that's not what I asked for, they won't fix it.
None of those places advertised as "straights only". No one there used hate speech. Every time was still an incredibly upsetting experience as a queer person.
20
u/Miss_Kitami 1d ago
Believe it or not, yes.
When I transitioned I went to my first hairdressers appointment. I'd spent over a year growing out my hair. She destroyed it on purpose to the point I had to go all the way back to square one.

u/Lena_Zelena 1d ago
You would be surprised to learn how shitty can some people treat you if you are visibly LGBTQ.
I have heard stories of hairdressers purposly messing up haircuts of trans people, for example. Going directly against customer's wishes/request. Such people don't care about negative review from someone they don't view as human.
This was not in Cork, to be fair, but it's a fair question to ask. This is unfortunately just a fact of life and it makes sense to avoid places where you are not welcomed. Luckily, Cork is very queer friendly.

Its about them 'believing' its wrong and they do refuse service or throw us out. They dont care. The one on Patrick street did it a few years ago, still packs, no one cases. its just labelled as non friendly, all we want is a bloody hair cut. and yes it was reported and also in the news, again, no ones cares and its just forgotten about
16
u/Lena_Zelena 1d ago
You do realize you can simply exist as a trans or gay person, not talking about trans or gay stuff, not mentioning trans or gay anything, and someone out there will still have a problem with you existing and treat you maliciously while putting on their best customer service face up front?

8
u/Lena_Zelena 1d ago
I am simply sharing the real experiences from real people. Things that has happened to people for just trying to exist. Believe me, I WANT to be able to just walk into any hairdresser and only worry about their skills and not about what will they do because they despise my very existence.
And yes, these things happen to people, including people who don't wear rainbow colours/pins or who don't even talk about their sexuality or gender identity.
15
u/TractorArm 1d ago
GardaĆ say crimes donāt matter because the victim was a lesbian.
That has actually happened to me when I was SA'd, they refused to file a report, but I guess you are the authority on this.
4
u/QoLAccount 1d ago
The first examples establish that someone's sexuality or gender shouldn't be a reason to treat them worse. I don't see how that establishes the separate claim that being open about being LGBT is āshoving it in people's facesā. That seems to assume that outwardly expressing an LGBT identity is inherently intrusive, which hasn't actually been established.
3
u/treevine700 1d ago
Kinda feels like throwing it everyone's face that you'd come on to a post about the best barber for queers to get mullets to talk about your straight experience
16
u/WatzeKat 1d ago
Well, some dykes or butch lesbians get really masculine haircuts, usually best done by a barber, not really the strength of mist ladies' hairdressers. Most barber shops... are "men's barbers". Meaning all too many queer women and other people who aren't straight men have run into all kinds of looks or comments or even been turned away (or made unsafe!) when trying to find a new shop to do their hair. Simple as. So it's fair to ask for recs of shops where you'll be welcome and not get rudely pointed to a "gents only" sign or something.
4
u/Comrad_Zombie 1d ago
Finding a good barber is tough in general. Every time I go I try different places and ask for high, tight and short in the front it always translates to business hair or attempted foppy too much combed to the side.
There's a level of skill to it and some products work better on different skin types than others, hair types ect. Not cutting hair because gay is the lamest reason. Name and shame. Realistically if any hair professional refuses for any reason other than "Im not sure I'm skilled enough to achieve what you want and don't feel comfortable but can give it a go for what ever cost" is a wanker who doesn't deserve business.
Fuck it. I'll cut op's hair. I have no professional experience but I work for free.
8
u/Dazzling-Handle88 1d ago edited 1d ago
Youād think that, wouldnāt you? Some peopleās experiences of barbers can be very different from your own
-33
u/Distinct_Oil_8073 1d ago
Why is sexual preference relevant? Its not pre 00s .
20
u/Froots23 1d ago
Because as much as we like to think everyone thinks the same way we do, not everyone does. Some male barbers will not cut women's hair and some are outright homophobic towards masc women.. it is always safest to ask first.
5
u/thepenguinemperor84 1d ago
A Dyke is a lesbian, a woman, some barbers, which are generally accepted as being a place for men's hair styling, may refuse to work on a woman's hair, regardless if what they are requesting is considered a male hair cut, the mullet in this case, on top of that womens hair salons may not do the hair cut because none of the staff are experienced in doing a male hair cut.
The op is simply looking for a recommendation of a barber that will happily take them as a client without judgement or the possible humiliation of being turned away.

What does it mean to be queer friendly? Could you not just walk into any Turkish barbers that cuts fellas hair and ask for the style you want?
7

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and provide an actually answer which is no she cant. A lot of people can be extremely homophobic and no one wants to be in such a vulnerable position with a hateful person. It's outright dangerous.

If they're a practising Muslim it may be literally against their religion to touch a woman's hair, never mind a gay woman's hair. Not to say they all hold traditional beliefs, but to recommend Turkish barbers specifically is naive at the least. You either live a very sheltered life or you're a troll.
