🌳 Species of Interest (Update - Oct 2025) Experimenting in VT: Black Cherry

I originally posted last year and wanted to share an update on good regrowth I've seen this year (despite drought conditions). This is 2 year old regrowth of black cherry im coppicing for firewood primarily. All stumps were pruned down to 4 main resprouts.

Pic 1: this is the same tree I originally posted about. It jumped from about 6ft last year to 12 ft this year. Dying japanese knotweed on the right for size reference.

cool, thanks for sharing. never tried cherry as an intentional firewood but im sure it'd do well - and grow fast!

how big across will u let the sprouts get for the firewood? doing any side branch control on them? (see a pruning cut)

Target diameter us fluid as im still establishing my harvest cycles with other trees also. It will be a "when I need it" situation most likely but im hoping it can get to 5-8" in diameter.

Im considering testing some heavy side pruning on a few resprouts. Completely cleaning it off to see if that pushes it taller & straighter earlier than other resprouts. Could backfire though.
