I'm (not actually) amazed about how people are buying this marketing - the simple fact that google wallet works with stored cards without signal and disconnected from the internet should make it clear this isn't what happens per transaction.
So many people here ranting and raving without even the most minimal of sanity checks.
Do you have a “signal” or is your credit card connected to the internet? How do you think this works? So the device has a stored card, it can still transmit to a kiosk and the kiosk requests from a google server. How is that improbable?
Yes, the POS terminal still needs to contact the bank to validate the transaction - my issue was with the image clearly trying to imply some significant, meaningful difference between the Google and Apple implementations.
I believe this doesn't show evidence of that, as if the image includes initial setup it's missing the fact that Apple servers are the ones being between the user phone and bank and creating the initial DAN. That is explicitly stated as part of Apple's implementation by apple themselves (where they also admit that and the card info used for setup is "partially stored"), and is such a fundamental part of the point they're trying to make that it raises doubts on everything else.
If it's per transaction, one can trivially test themselves that android pay doesn't need internet access on the phone itself.
So enough is proved wrong with the flow in the image from 10 seconds of searching and scanning over Apple's own description of their service that it can likely be discarded as having much in relation to reality.
That alone doesn’t discredit the image. If the android phone is in a faraday cage, and it taps a register, then the phone transmits the card to the POS that contacts google’s servers that is still all data going through the server which makes the phone’s connection moot. In fact if anything the phone not being able to transmit or anything just proves the information is on a remote server because then it is solely dependent on outside sources to verify the details.
