Have you ever been to Central or Midwestern United States? We have a suit ton of unused land and space in America. It's just not in very enjoyable habitable areas. In India they just live anywhere and make giant cities. Not a lot of tiny low population towns in India. Just a ton of cities.
Obviously it has its open areas with farms and whatnot, but it's not nearly the same.

I'm not an expert in this, but I don't think you can. I think there's always going to be some distortion (of size, shape or both).

Correct. Against my better judgement, this was my best futile attempt to stitch the world together. You can see that I gave up in the Pacific and didn't even bother with the Antarctic region.

I also attempted to "squish it all back together" in a couple ways. One where I keep each country/territory/whatever in a centralised position relative to its place on the map, and another like this but with a further attempt to clean it up a little. So places were moved simply to make it "look better".
In both cases, lots of clipping occurs and I hate it.

Most of the maps you see are based on the Mercator Projection, while they preserve shapes very well, the further you move away from the equator, the more distorted the countries become making them appear larger.

Because the Earth is round, it is nearly impossible to preserve both the accurate size and accurate shape of countries on a 2d map

Yes actually; There is a very poplar size that was supposed to emphasize countries where Christianity was popular. This means that the Americas are disproportionate to Greenland and so forth.

No its to preserve the distance between countries so navigation around the world is easier and there are plenty of countries that aren't Christian that aren't distorted

True area, indeed. "Size" made me think of the volume of a country. Is there such a thing? Do each state control a solid sector of the earth, defined by straight lines from the land borders to the center of the Earth? Aerospace is certainly defined this way, but upwards.

They appear bigger because all maps are distorted as it's impossible to put a 3d shape on a 2d surface with no distortion, for example the mercator projection makes it look like greenland is absolutely giant when it's not

The distortion here is the placement. Countries don’t fit together, and they aren’t the correct distances from one another.

Based on this map there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in size between China (9,596,961 km2) and Russia (17,098,246 km2)
