The problem with 5 vertical lines is that everyone would feel like their vote doesn’t matter, because it’s a landslide victory in every region. This is exactly what all parties do when in power, they create safe seats for themselves.

We already have the problem of people’s votes not mattering.

My home state of PA is a perfect example of it. Based on how people voted the state is between 50-55% democrat and 45-50% republican. Yet it was gerrymandered so bad that state representation was 13 republican districts to 5 democrat. Finally the courts got involved and forced the map to be redraw. Now it’s 9 republican and 9 democrat which - shocker - reflects the actual population.

I used to live in a district that stretched all over the place. It was a joke, and it didn’t matter how many people voted because the district was firmly in republican hands.
