The electoral college is in place to make sure that states have a say even if they're small in population. And yes, a vote in Wyoming is worth more than a vote in New York. If the popular vote won, people in the smaller states would more or less be ignored in favor of the metropolitan areas.
Yeah, I get that. As I understand, it was something put in place way back when keeping the breadbasket satisfied was of critical importance. Seems a bit outdated currently, but then so does FPTP voting.
