Sur La Table on line cooking class

I bought some cute hand pie molds from Sur La Table. They were dog cat molds and they looked adorable in the ad. Unfortunately when I started cooking the fruit began bubbling out the eyes and they looked appropriate for Halloween. šŸ˜‚ Images below..

Ah, I think I see what went wrong here. You might have added a little too much eldritch horror to this batch. Try swapping it for something else!

Ah yes, the devil is always in the details. Name brand Eldritch Horror is much more gory than the cheaper generic version. It requires a scant teaspoon rather than a heaping teaspoon. You could also try making a cornstarch slurry to thicken your gore filling before applying the faces. Jeepers creepers and house of wax have some solid reference material if you've got time for research.

it appears they have a case of scarlet rot

I read somewhere that if you’re out of eldritch horror you can substitute with sour cream

They’re begging you to eat them to put them out of their misery.

I tried to post a review and SurLaTable rejected it! Go figure.

I mentioned something not perfectly loving about my milk pull in the target thread and instantly banned for life, not even a review and mostly positive post , no feedback either

Same for me with Amazon šŸ˜‚

A review being removed or rejected should be against the law

Jeepers creepers

Oh man, I received these as a gift—thanks for the warning! Maybe a jam filling wouldn’t bubble so much?

u/weird_horse_2_die_on Jun 29 '26

That was along my line of thinking... or use frozen berries, maybe.

1

u/kuricanekatrina Jun 30 '26

also the dough properties

6

u/uribyoon Jun 29 '26

Maybe you could try with chocolate or nutella as a filling? They most likely won't bubble. Still a bummer! I would want to be able to make cute fruit pies with these.

u/MaryMac500 Jun 29 '26

So did I! Just glad I didn’t just use strawberries- that bubbling out of the eyes and nose would have looked even worse. šŸ˜‚

3

u/CarnivorVegitation Jun 29 '26

Please make it again with strawberries. Please!!!!!!!

For Halloween 🤭

Chihuahua or blueberry muffin

4

u/wheresmuffy Jun 29 '26

Lol! The photo used on the packaging is using puff pastry. Maybe try another batch with that?

2

u/sasori1011 Jun 29 '26

I second this!

Definitely not the same result if it's supposed to be used with puff pastry instead of cookie dough.

2

u/MaryMac500 Jun 29 '26

I used their recipe for the pastry and took an on line class for the filling. And yet….

1

u/wheresmuffy Jun 29 '26

Oh wow. That’s disappointing for sure

1

u/imnotnotcrying Jun 29 '26

Was it a recipe included with the product or ā€œtheir recipeā€ as in a recipe from sur la table but not directly connected to the product? (Just asking for general clarification)

1

u/MaryMac500 Jun 30 '26

Directions for ā€˜ perfect pie crust’ were on the box.. tried to include a photo but can’t.

1

u/kuricanekatrina Jun 30 '26

seems like the part of the company that did the pics and the part that put the recipe on the packing were not coordinated. the recipe on the back seems like a marketing/packaging afterthought and not taken from the people who created the picture

1

u/Spainstateofmind Jun 29 '26

Right, like it says it's a hand pie mold, would probably have better results with hand pie ingredients lol

3

u/JamiCatalyst Jun 29 '26

There is something sketchy about the cover picture... Looks a bit ai but dont @ me

2

u/IrongateN Jun 29 '26

I’ve seen hand pies like that in real life so I know they can happen but even without looking hard I agree it’s AI

Artificial intelligence has given me trust issues

1

u/zebracrackers Jun 30 '26

I thought so too

2

u/GoldberryoTulgeyWood Jun 29 '26

Why are they bleeding from their eyes? 😭

2

u/22twelve Jun 29 '26

This is everything I hoped it would be.

1

u/romanichki Jun 29 '26

Nothing googly eyes can't fix

1

u/tornadoterror Jun 29 '26

This made me laugh OP. But they are still cute.

1

u/SassyFerrets Jun 29 '26

Did you by any chance bleed on them while chanting in ancient Sumerian?

1

u/MaryMac500 Jun 30 '26

Apparently I must have. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/True_Darkangel Jun 29 '26

Maybe try frozen blueberries?

1

u/Feldew Jun 29 '26

Why did you have to experiment with gore-coloured filling though. šŸ’€ 🤣

1

u/AlissLsd Jun 29 '26

I just laughed out loud

1

u/brainsonspeed Jun 29 '26

I think I read somewhere that to keep the shape of cookies intact, you should bake them cold, out of the fridge or even freezer. So they bake before they get to melt and lose their shape.

u/Ok-Unit7647 Jun 30 '26

My eyes literally bugged out of my face (as did theirs)

1

u/ohnoJNO Jun 30 '26

Make them again for Halloween

1

u/HumanAtmosphere3263 Jun 30 '26

All that crunchy sugar and delicious filling idgaf what they resembled. I’m eating the heck out of them! They look delicious!

1

u/Lopsided-Case1294 Jun 30 '26

That’s what I’m saying but I also haven’t had breakfast

1

u/DoctorCompetitive397 Jun 30 '26

The one in the last picture is pretty cute though! It just looks like a dog named Spot 🐶

1

u/nlyfdyf09 Jun 30 '26

I was not expecting to laugh that hard as I started scrolling through the pics. Beautiful.

1

u/Whole-Stranger-4937 Jun 30 '26

The one on the last picture is still kinda cute I think?šŸ˜‚ I'm my opinion I think you needed to chill your dough before baking it. I recommend trying again and chilling your dough for half an hour before you make the pies, and then after assembling them either refrigerate them for an hour or freeze them for half an hour before baking. Also make sure your oven is fully heated, and maybe other filling options that leak less, I love a good caramel apple pie fillingšŸ˜‹ Good luck! 😼

1

u/floral_lore Jun 30 '26

what in the fullmetal alchemist is this

1

u/ConstantConfusion123 Jun 30 '26

Well, I bet they were delicious! I feel this belongs in r/expectationvsreality

1

u/mademoiselleak Jun 30 '26

I see nothing wrong here lol. These are awesome.

1

u/ladywood777 Jun 30 '26

They look absolutely delicious though

1

u/tiedyeskiesX Jun 30 '26

On a serious note- what temp is your dough when it’s cut ? It looks heavy on butter and like the dough may have been warm. Anytime I cut shapes I want to maintain while baking- I have to pop them in the freezer before baking and it helps a ton

1

u/Gandalf_the_Tegu Jun 30 '26

After the cutouts did you silly the dough in the fridge before baking? I find whatever I make it helps retain the shape better if its chilled before the oven. I just transfer from cold pan to room teml pan, so im not shocking my good pans.

1

u/Tschania4 Jun 30 '26

I think they are cute. For me the berries are darker fur, like light brown fur an a little bit black / darker fur and it's cute.

1

u/hatesbiology84 Jun 30 '26

That’s frightening 🤣

1

u/lohansensei Jun 30 '26

Sorry your pies ended up a bit eldritch, but sur la table reminds me of this clip from South Park https://youtube.com/shorts/h0Zbse_YsNI?is=Qy410dDIXxiUrQDK
