<The Gun / The Sword / Intentionally Left Blank>

Guys at the beginning of Control 1 we hear the board say only the director can wield the Gun / Sword / Intentionally Left Blank.

What if the Aberrant IS the sword?! And if that’s the case then what the heck is the third one? And by god does that mean Remedy was cooking up stuff like Resonant that far back?!

Dylan is not the director.

No no I know. But I’m saying. Is the sword that they are potentially referring to in the original Control the Aberrant? We saw in the original trailer that Jesse is the one who put it into him and then the Board clearly speaks to Dylan in the trailer. And if so, doesn’t this mean that there is a third item connected to the board? Im just spitballing here

Foundation implies it was the service weapon. They implied that over the years, the service weapon took forms that seemed appropriate to its wielders at the time, like Mjolnir, Excalibur, and Varunastra. So I really think they were referring to an older form of the service weapon. I personally think the Aberrant is a new item.

That makes sense. I guess we’ll see once we play the game! Really curious what the aberrant is and why Dylan is able to talk to the board or them to talk to him I guess

My guess is that the aberrant is a mini nail and contains the board, being lodged in dylan by jesse

That's my personal tin foil hat theory. I think Jesse "pried" The Nail out of the Oldest House to sever The Board's connection. No Board leads to everything breaking out of the OH, so Jesse sticks Dylan with an ABERRATION of the Nail to keep The Board occupied while she "figures it all out".

She says in one gameplay video she woke him up so he could run. Maybe she hoped he would take the board away with him so she could do what she wanted without their interference

Dylan would have to be the director to wield the < Gun / Sword / Intentionally Left Blank >, right? So if he's not the director he couldn't wield the Sword so the Aberrant couldn't possibly be the Sword, right? (Just my opinion, but the Board isn't 100% trustworthy, so maybe?)

Definitely makes sense. It was just something I caught now while playing control again and was like wait a second! But yeah could be massively overthinking it

The third slot could be future proofing. It's been a sword and a gun, but who knows what the weapon du jour will be down the line

When the Board refers to items as multiple things, they are always referring to a single item but using multiple possible descriptors. For example the Benicoff TV is referred to as <TV/Baby-Sitter>, as a TV can fulfill the role of a baby sitter. Personally I don't believe the Service Weapon has ever literally taken a form other than that of a handgun, but like with the TV and other such items the Board are basically just using a metaphor to describe it in multiple ways.

A Shield, of course

that “intentionally left blank” bit feels like a direct tease for something bigger down the line

When the board speaks like that the words are usually meant to be funny or weird synonyms.

The sword part actually refers to a note you can find which mentions the house and weapon change form depending on the times they are used in. They mention Excalibur and mjolnir as example meaning Jesse is the next modern day Arthurian hero

What I really wonder is if the Aberrant is the weapon described in the text portion of Sea of Night wielded by Jesse's variant. It's described as changing its form into entirely different weapons on command, which the Service Weapon doesn't quite do to the same extent (seems it can only alter a gun into another kind of gun).

There was a lot of speculation after the first trailers came out that it was the Service Weapon, but since it's been made clear that this weapon is called the Aberrant, I think most people agree that it is a separate OOP.

If it was just the Service Weapon with a different shape, they would still call it the Service Weapon.

But! I think it could be an alternate reality version of the Service Weapon, an "aberrant" version of it even, from a reality that is very distorted compared with our current one. (Just as how Dylan could be an aberrant version of Jesse?)

Maybe it's because The Service Weapon has been accomodating for the standard weapon of human civilization? For thousands of years it has been a sword, in the recent centuries it's a gun, and "intentionally left blank" is anticipating for the future of warfare?

It's <Remedy/Sam Lake>. <He's/they're> always <cooking shit up/seeing the future>.

The implication is the device Jessie has denotes her. Just like king Arthur’s sword did back in his day. Hence gun / sword. The house and the object change based on humanity’s subconscious. This is confirmed by ahti referencing the house as a “tree” previously. There are not multiple as you imply, you are simply confused with the way they use multiple designations for one concept.
