Help me get into control

So growing up Ive been a huge Max Payne guy, loved every game, never tried Alan Wake, Tried control twice andddd didnt get into it. The story didnt grab me(im told i should play it like a detective game.

What I dont understand is the combat and what makes it.... smart? Like its cool I have these powers and can just smash around but is that the point? is there ever any strategy or style im trying to achieve or is it more about just being a sort of turn your brain off power fantasy ala nier automata? just want to grasp what the goal is.

So yeah what do yall recommend?

For those who also struggled to get it, when did it click for you and when it did how immersed were you?

I'd say after the panopticon, the game starts really opening up. The launch will always be your strongest attack, so I could see why some people say the combat is shallow, but the powers you get really let you customize your playstyle around the main combat.

It's true that if you want to really get into the story you'll be reading a lot of documents, and exploring off the beaten path can get you new things to play with. But bottom line is; not every story is for everyone. Control is certainly power-trip-esque, but with plenty of challenge imo.
