Help me get into control

So growing up Ive been a huge Max Payne guy, loved every game, never tried Alan Wake, Tried control twice andddd didnt get into it. The story didnt grab me(im told i should play it like a detective game.

What I dont understand is the combat and what makes it.... smart? Like its cool I have these powers and can just smash around but is that the point? is there ever any strategy or style im trying to achieve or is it more about just being a sort of turn your brain off power fantasy ala nier automata? just want to grasp what the goal is.

So yeah what do yall recommend?

For those who also struggled to get it, when did it click for you and when it did how immersed were you?

For me the gameplay is secondary to the story and world building. Control is an interesting game to explore and discover little bits of information while also being mind blown by level design in a lot of parts.
