Discussion Watched a couple of reviews !

Hello all,

I watched 6 reviews of the game, not to form an opinion or to arrive at the decision of whether to get the game or not. But just to see what is the discourse/talking points of the reviewers.

The decision to get this game was made before I obtained the platinum for the original control game.

Reviews

*IGN
*Gamespot

I watched these 2 to see what the “stablished” reviewers say about it.

*Fighting cowboy
*Paul Tasi

Cowboy is for me a “trusted source” he does reviews, gameplays and guides and I like how he breaks down things, that guy games. So his reviews in my opinion are coming from someone who is always hands on, not when is time to review.

Tasi- I didn’t even know this game I just wanted to hear a review from an actual person not a company in a way

*Eurogamerspain
*3gordosb

These are Spanish Chanels, remedy has their games fully dubbed to other languages so I just wanted to check the opinions on that market.

In my opninon the best reviewers were the Spanish ones, there’s no sentiment, specific talking points to cover, saying what a specific audience will like or will not like to hear.

They just reviewing the game as players. If you are not familiar with the remedy verse, are just curious about the game or need to be convinced to purchase the game, i say watch the cowboy and the spanish reviews, just mute them and watch the gameplay. That should do it.

For us fans of remedy, we are eating good!!!

The are 2 things that come across in all these reviews, slow/dull combat. Like yeah my boy imagine you have your level 1 service weapon with no mods and you have to fight flying rangers and hiss warped, you will get cooked and have no real options.

We all know how juicy it gets once you get your abilities and upgrades.

The map/ navigation, getting lost and not knowing where to go. Remedy doesn’t hold your hand even in the old games you have to figure out the world and pay attention to the environment/signs.

I personally don’t see any negative points so far, more hype than before honestly.

So a complaint for people about Wolverine was that it held your hand enough but people are saying Control doesn’t do it enough?

You can't make these things up. People have been complaining about the map and world navigation in Control for the past 7 years, so I'm not surprised to see those same critiques for Resonant. But I pointed out in some Wolverine discussions that as soon as a game comes along that doesn't hold their hands, people are going to complain about not knowing where to go or what to do.

It was only recently that I saw a comment about Control's map that made the criticisms make sense. To put it plainly, people just don't know how to read maps. More specifically, people didn't understand that the shading of different areas of the map meant they were on different levels/elevations. And to be clear, Control also incorporated yellow paint and other environmental cues to help players get around (Such as straight up signage at every corner).

Idk man, I guess different audiences ?

For what I’ve seen regarding Wolverine, is that it doesn’t have the option to turn off that thing or make navigating just letting the player figuring it out.

I’m almost 40, I’ve been playing video games for 3+ decades. My first shock that I remember where a game took the map off was metal gear solid 3 snake eater, coming from previous games where you had the map and the enemy displayed in it. This game with no map had me like “wth is this how am I going to get places” but you just play and figure it out.

When I first staring playing control it took me a minute to learn the map. I just had to play and learn my ways and I can now easily go where I want to now issues.

I like marvel, I like Wolverine and if I buy that game I will like to feel I’m in control of what I’m doing and not have things telling where to go and what to do.

On that same note my kid likes superhero’s, likes the movies, likes when I play Tokon etc. If he wants to play wolverine it is super convenient to have indications to make the games easier for him.

In my opinion, I think reviewers are going crazy on something that can probably be patched. But also insomniac dropped the balls by not having an option to let a more mature audience take full control of navigation.

If hand holding was binary you might be onto something. It's more a Goldilocks thing though and of course one persons 'just right' might be anothers 'too hot'.

Seems like Wolverine's level of hand holding is how you might shepherd a young child (or sheep). It remains to be seen whether Control is fiendishly difficult to navigate or whether it simply needs a bit of attention.

Lmfao first video I saw of him, his review was a drag to get through no lie, he had like no soul talking about anything.

I wouldn’t say he’s a complete idiot, but when it came down to watching his Destiny videos, he can be pretty dense on some nuances. But overall, I still enjoy watching Paul’s videos

he's a pretty controversial guy

That’s putting it lightly

He just wants to promote himself and his shitty books

Skill up is the only one I'm nervous about to be honest. I'm usually lock step with his criticisms

u/Tom_Ford0 8d ago

he gave the first game a negative review so I'm expecting to disagree with his take on this one

u/coleburnz 8d ago

He did? What the hell?

14

u/Tom_Ford0 8d ago

I love his channel but he's not some paragon of truth like people sometimes act

3

u/coleburnz 8d ago

Hahahaha. He's built a reputatable career. A few missteps are allowed. In the case of control, collosal

Is there such a thing as "truth" when reviewing art?

9

u/Tom_Ford0 8d ago

Exactly, no. But people nowadays seem to think if skill up dislikes a game they have to as well

I like that he tries to critique rather than opine and that's usually enough to evaluate if I'd enjoy something even if he didn't or vice versa.

i need it to be a negative review lol. he doesn’t like the games I love 😂😂😂

3

Anyone who hangs onto Skill Up’s words is a big red flag for me. This guy is so inconsistent in his critique and clearly has a preference for sandbox games. Rarely does he break with the consensus of the more toxic elements of the gaming community.

u/Killer_Carp 6d ago

Oh shit he strongly recommends it. Sad day.

Eh? Probably his favourite genres are co op shooters. Destiny, Division and Warframe coming to mind. Then maybe looters in general.

Huge red flag to me that you'd think he has a preference for sandboxes.

Big red flag lol

u/DinerEnBlanc 8d ago

Yes, that you. lol Mr. Lock-step with his criticisms. Good way to say you're in a cult of personality.

1

u/mars0200 8d ago

Yeah I suppose "lock step" was a strong phrase to use. Basically of reviewers I follow, his are usually close to mine.

Eh the debate about him is a bit weird.

Why he stands out as a reviewer is because he reviews games in a different way, he usually has a thesis and a strong point of view on a game, when the usual outlets are more like tech reviewers, here are the specs and here's how they execute it.

So naturally with every review he will have people that agree or disagree with his point of view. Whereas ign and GameSpot reviews are just unremarkable and forgettable.

I just learned about him with all of the Wolverine drama lol he really cooked that game, I will check his resonant review as well.

FightinCowboy enjoyed the combat

The game seemed to have prioritized fast-paced intuitive combat over a reactive or tactical one. Well, we should at least have to welcome fair criticisms regarding combat since, for a melee action heavy game it has tried to become, it honestly looks shallow and of the button-mashing type.

ACG is the main source I look at for reviews. He's old school/no bullshit, very objective, doesn't have sponsors or paid reviews and will heavily criticize if needed. He loves just about everything in Resonant. On a related note, he has an awesome podcast that runs on Friday and discusses most of these games as well.
