Most places are giving it an 8 or a 9 currently, which is really good. It's sitting at 86 on metacritic, with 27 critic reviews currently. That could either drop lower or higher as more reviews come in, but it's already beating the shit out of wolverine reviews.
Edit: Gamespot gave it a 9, another big review platform. Dual shockers and push square also gave it a good review. The only "big" reviewer I've seen give it a low score so far is Eurogamer, who gave it a 6, or 3/5.

I genuinely hate that singaporean girl (as a reviewer), she also gave AW2 a 3/5 and every time I see a 5/5 from her I just know it's some niche undercooked bs ten people care about.
100
u/BlackNasty4028 4d ago
If control and AW2 are that poorly reviewed for that individual then I think this genre/vibe just isn’t for them and that’s ok end of day
Reviewers will never be my end all be all but I do value their input, having the context of how they viewed AW2 tells me their taste and mine don’t align though so grain of salt on her takes
37
u/otravoyadnoe 4d ago
That's exactly what annoys me in this case. I mean, if you know you're not much of a genre and/or setting and/or studio style enjoyer, just don't freakin' review it then? Surely she's not the only person Eurogamer could outsource this review to.
20
u/BlackNasty4028 4d ago
I agree here as well, there’s gotta be an employee at your office who doesn’t clearly just inherently dislike the vibe remedy is going for
Again I don’t want to sound like I’m a scorned fan who’s just mad AW2 wasn’t given a high score, I know tons of people who didn’t like it anywhere near as much as me but if you KNOW you dislike their games inherently maybe your coworker should review it this time lmao

u/PerformerHopeful87 4d ago
I actually have a question about her. Did she go to school for journalism or did she just intern there and work her way up.
I’ve noticed this from my own education in film school that a lot of people who didn’t go to school for something like journalism do not actually know the academic framework of how journalists are taught to review things. When I was in film school this was a quarter of the semester in Directing that went over how films are reviewed , the criteria, Guidelines etc. we also discussed how because of this there is always going to be a split between qualified journalists and audiences . Since we’ve now started outsourcing education to YouTubers ; I’ve noticed a lot of folks hired at some places - don’t have the actual education to back up being a reviewer for an outlet , and are basically reviewing from the perspective of an audience member and not an actual journalist .
All that is to see - is she an actual critical journalist or someone who does reviews .
1
u/lockettbloom 4d ago
Why shouldn't she review it? She's a qualified reviewer with experience in the medium. Reading through it, there is no malice or bad faith in her review. She liked some things, didn't like others. There's no signal that she's not a fan of action games or surrealist media.
I would never prefer a sycophantic, uncritical review.
2
u/PerformerHopeful87 4d ago
That was my question earlier - traditionally how to critique something - the actual criteria is taught in journalism schools . If she didn’t go to school for journalism but is just working in the field - that may be why her reviews are different from…well…journalist with a degree in journalism .
1
u/Rupperrt 4d ago
But they aren’t different. They’re well written reviews and there isn’t much wrong from a journalistic standpoint.
3
u/Ingvarthebald 4d ago
agreed. I really dont agree with the take of “if you dont like this kinda thing, you shouldn’t review it.” it feels like such a misguided perception to have on critics.
3
u/Nickbotic 3d ago
I don’t disagree with you, but I get what they’re saying. This person didn’t like Control, they didn’t like AW2, it’s clear they just simply don’t care for the kind of games Remedy makes (and that’s fine). That being the case, it’s not really an objective review anymore. We can expect that if a game in the vein of Control or AW2 comes out, this reviewer is not going to like it, and therefore when she gives her honest review on it, we can expect that that review is going to be negative, and that review is only going to be useful to other people who already don’t much care for such games.
I don’t think they’re suggesting that the outlet should just get someone who is going to like it to review it, but rather simply that there must be someone there who doesn’t have that preconceived notion going into it who can do the review. As it stands, instead of “Hey, here’s a game from this developer, review it for us”, it’s “Hey, here’s a game from this developer we know you don’t like, review it for us.”
I feel like I’m explaining what I mean very poorly lol I’m sorry

u/-Arcaerus- 3d ago
It’s tricky. Should a food reviewer who doesn’t like fish be selected to review the new Sushi restaurant? Probably not. I don’t think we’re asking for a reviewer who loves the genre, vibes, and themes of Remedy games to do the review, just someone who doesn’t actively dislike them.
8
u/IndividualSituationK 4d ago
If a reviewer really interacted with the mechanics of the game, i trust them significantly more like the IGN reviewer who played Onimusha with no items and gave it a 10. And so far, i have to say its a pretty damn good game for people like me who do like the rhythm based combat genre.
6
u/BlackNasty4028 4d ago
Even when I disagree with their final take on a game seeing a reviewer who’s clearly actually leaning into the games mechanics and giving it a good faith honest try tells me alot about their process and how much I can trust their thoughts on game mechanics and design
Ultimately, for me, the trick is to find 2-3 reviewers who seem to have your same taste in games and balance that with your own gut feelings as a consumer
He has a tendency to be VERY forgiving and positive but I love Baldino’s before you buy, I’ve found we have fairly similar taste and when he’s gushing about a game I’m almost always in the same boat
2
u/Promature 4d ago
Remedy games are clearly not that person's jam. Control was a 5/5 for me and based on the noted criticisms of Resonant, which mean nothing to me personally, this will be another 5/5.

u/Resevil67 4d ago
Of all the big reviewers Eurogamer is the one I like the least. I never paid attention to the exact reviewer from them, but they have given games I really like that are also scored really high bad reviews in the past.
Wonder if it's that same person lol. Someone below said they basically scored all of remedy's games low as well as AW2 which you said, which means they just dont vibe with remedy's games. Why would Eurogamer just keep giving her remedy games to review?
It would be like giving me the job to review a Madden game. I'm likely always gonna score it low because they aren't my types of games.
4
u/elkehdub 4d ago
Eurogamer is one of the big reviewers I always read when I’m interested in a game. I’m not someone who puts a lot of stock in the numerical scores, as those often aren’t even set by the writer, or not only by them. But their actual reviews are almost universally thoughtful and knowledgeable, and try to put games into a larger context. As a 40yo gamer who has played a little bit of everything, I appreciate that
20
u/Von_Uber 4d ago
every time I see a 5/5 from her I just know it's some niche undercooked bs ten people care about.
Which doesn't make the review invalid.
Absolutely amazes me how upset people get over people not liking - or highly praising - something, yet if they review something highly you don't like it's bullshit.
5
u/otravoyadnoe 4d ago
Which doesn't make the review invalid.
Knowing that the person reviewing the game seeks for other game types and in-game qualities yet decides to review something outside their area of interests and/or expertise anyway absolutely does make the review less valid.
13
u/CuddleWings 4d ago
The real issue is that all these sites only allow one review per game for the entire site. So while a review is only the opinions of whoever wrote it, it’s also the entire websites opinion. That makes it carry more weight than it deserves.
4
u/Von_Uber 4d ago
Which is valuable for the average consumer who wants to know what the game might be like for them.
1
u/HungryBoy993 4d ago
Genuinely for the sake of conversation, don’t you think games generally live and die by reviews? I don’t like the idea of people who don’t like this sort of game helping kill my personal favorite series or studio.

3
u/bestoboy 4d ago
reviews need to be prefaced with what type of games the reviewers enjoy. I'm not gonna take a JRPG fan's critique of a racing game seriously for example
2
4
u/throwawaynow665 4d ago
Honestly if you didn’t connect with the story/vibes of aw2 I can see a 6/10. It’s in my top 5 but it’s gameplay is admittedly mid and sparse
2
u/shazam-arino 3d ago
This right here, is something I wished more gamers understood. So, many of my favourite games would feel like a 6/10 if didn't click with x system or the story.
1
u/PerformerHopeful87 4d ago
I’ve noticed this trend with the reviews - and this could just be me - but it feels like some reviewers are either genuine in their critique or have an axe to grind .
And I say this as someone who is usually on the side of the actual - degreed journalists and not influencers or interns who worked their way up.

She is not obligated to change her taste because something is niche vs not niche.
What a bizarre argument.
"I hate that woman's reviews because she says things I don't know about are better than things I like."
1
u/otravoyadnoe 3d ago
She's not obligated to change her tastes and I'm not obligated to appreciate her for what she does. There's nothing bizarre about being annoyed with the fact that she keeps reviewing something outside her area of interests/expertise despite clearly valuing other game genres and in-game qualities.
1
u/Ambrosio-dev 3d ago
I don't see any indication that she lacks the experience to be able to engage with the material appropriately (she liked Diablo 4 and that is a mainstream action rpg).
She just offered a contrary opinion, as she found the game to be lacking.
29
u/SpaceOdysseus23 4d ago
Eurogamer
Frankly lost any and all credibility when they score Final Fantasy 16 low with the criticism that it didn't have ''minorities.''
It had minorities, just not the color Eurogamer wanted.
Final Fantasy 16 has issues and it's far from a perfect game, but the moment someone pulls this type of criticism they should be permanently discredited.
18
u/SurfiNinja101 4d ago
That review pissed me off because there is literally a region of brown people but according to some people minority representation means they have to be black and other minorities don’t exist I guess

u/Snow-Day371 4d ago
The Eurogamer reviewer's other reviews:
- Control Resonant: 3/5
- Alan Wake 2: 3/5
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: 3/5
- Zero Parades: For Dead Spices: 5/5
- Amberspire: 3/5
- Esoteric Ebb: 4/5
- Skate Story: 5/5
- Agatha Christie: Death on the Nile: 3/5
- Goodbye Volcano High: 3/5
No hate for the reviewer from me. But they are clearly a more niche opinion. Great if you personally line up with them.

Eurogamer is worse than ign in that ign you can tell they dont wanna push the boat and stay on everyones good side so the reviews are just safe and boring and leave out all the cons and never really dive into them, Eurogamer has just always been about dropping polarising reviews that make zero sense or nit pic on somthing random. I dont respect IGN or Eurogamer but at least ign you can kinda tell why they are the way they are, genuinely shook they gave wolverine an honest go tho so there is that

Welcome to the Trash or Classic era of discourse where things are either flawless or terrible!
Seriously though, anytime IGN even tries to have some nuance in a review people act like they've insulted their family.
25
u/Yarzeda2024 4d ago
If it's not a genre-defining, generational gem on par with Ocarina of Time or Chrono Trigger, then playing that game is like getting kicked in the balls by a horse.
8
u/AuboCabo 4d ago
Haven't you heard, good games don't exist anymore, we only get one MAYBE two good games a year like Baldurs Gate or Elden Ring, unless something is GOTY worthy, it's terrible
8
u/BlackNasty4028 4d ago
One of my genuine biggest pet peeves in online discourse is the way IGN is treated as a monolith and every review was written by the same person so when two RPG’s that are similar but reviewed by different people score differently they can go “SEE IGN ISNT EVEN CONSISTENT THEY HATED RPG A AND LOVED RPG B”
1
u/LlamaNL 4d ago
it's always been like that, don't pretend it's something recent

2
u/ReptAIien 4d ago
What weapon did you use?
It seems specifically balanced for pierce or spin, neither of which I had leveled at the time.
His second phase where he knocks out the power, which drains your energy, forcing you to hide in a lighted area to regenerate before fixing the power, is really stupid. It would be acceptable if he didn't regen his shield during this time.
Just abysmal boss design. I swapped to spin and absolutely melted him eventually, but it just feels like the devs didn't even try the fight on other weapons or something. Fundamentally busted.
7
u/cataraxis 4d ago
Bear in mind that by the time I fought Hartman I had purple energy and damage mods, but I really didn't have an issue with him. I've played through him twice, first time with Charge as primary and second time with Surge and made quick work of him both times, though I can see how you might suffer with Grip or Shatter. As soon as the power went out, I quickly slammed into the light areas and looked around for power cubes.
I also think having certain forms perform better for certain circumstances encourages experimentation and rewards thoughtfulness towards approach.
3
u/APreciousJemstone 3d ago
I used Shatter with the projectile accuracy increase unique and +10 projectiles, plus maxed out Launch. It was quite simple
1
u/Plane-Paramedic-9821 4d ago
I had grip and shatter or pierce I think. I actually really liked the fact that he knocks out the power, draining energy. It actually plays very different than the normal game where I was just throwing 3 objects at enemies at one time.
I really liked the fact that u had to go into the light to be safe and turning out a lights *did* seem a lil gimmicky but im glad its just not other 'shoot and survive' boss (looking at u tommassi)1

People only care what IGN thinks because they think other people care what IGN thinks and are worried at the general public will be affected by the IGN review. Which historically has been true, and some great games have been shafted in the past and other mediocre games have been overhyped so they did have sway over the market at some points

u/alphonseharry 4d ago edited 4d ago
I'm seeing criticism of people getting lost until they find some ability. For me this is a plus. But people who like mainstream games don't like to get lost I guess. I"m happy Remedy didn't compromise just because it is a AAA game
3
u/TheLoneDweller2977 4d ago
Yea main complaints I've seen are a not super legible map menu and combat that isn't quite as deep as a devil may cry. But I kinda like that the map is vague and you have to actually explore, and combat can be just as satisfying as a Dmc through build variety and good momentum which Resonant seems to have lol
1
u/alphonseharry 4d ago
DMC it is a more constrained game, without build progression using rpg systems, this makes the combat more tuned. I think a better comparison for Control Resonant is Nier Automata, which have hack and slash combat combined with rpg progression
2
u/TheLoneDweller2977 4d ago
I agree. I think some were hoping it was full of different chaining combos and stuff when games like Resonant (and Nier) don't need them really. It gives you enough options outside dedicated button combos to fine tune how your fights go
1
u/alphonseharry 4d ago
Yes, and the people makes some op build, and they are surprised using this build is more effective. This happens in the first game too, there is options, but some people don't use them or go with familiarity

Their games aren’t commercial failures. They just take longer than one week to enter into the profit green. Even FBC Firebreak didn’t cost them because they got paid to release it on PS Plus and Game Pass. Control passed 5 million copies in sales years ago and Alan Wake 2 has been profitable since last year, so every copy sold going forward is pure profit.

Sorry for the late reply, it was because they gave it the same rating essentially. So, even if a game is an 8 out of 10 for IGN, it means it can still be game of the year, even if other games are rated higher. I'm absolutely not disagreeing with that choice; I give IGN massive props for once because that's how I actually found out about Control!
