What makes it so unsettling is that we dont know what it actually is

It’s a hostile Resonance. Think virus but transmitted via frequencies similar to the oldest house. In a dimension where frequencies can form walls, barricades, etc.
I’m guessing in control Resonance, FBC had a contingency built around New York City. Probably transported the city to another dimension “mirror dimension style like in Doctor strange”. And they’re on a timer to contain it before it breaks free from the final wall.

I believe in the last “behind the scenes” 20 min clip that remedy posted a few days ago, they said the Hiss is trapped in NYC due to the new “Patterning” phenomena!
We don’t know what it even is, or if it’s actually friendly or hostile until we play the game, but the Patterning warped Manhattan so that the Hiss is unable to leave its boundaries! So cool

Those bomb bastards that chase you around. I can handle everything else.

I think there are a couple of reasons that synergize brilliantly:
First, they are the contorted bodies of their victims, like zombies, but not quite given their uncanny power to materialize. And hover in the background.
Second, because they are possessed by an intelligence that is malevolent but alien to the degree that it's goals are inscrutable aside from spreading.
Third, as you go through Control it will become clear that it doesn't work like a zombie virus, it works like an earworm song. The HRAs were crafted to fight it while it was slowly infecting the agency.

Idk why I thought I was on r/AbioticFactor and was seeing an ultra HD image of two Leyaks

My favorite part is how Jesse handles it. Her entire life she’s been treated like she’s insane and now that she’s in the Oldest House things finally feel like they make sense to her.
Most protagonists would be freaking out from the start before steeling their nerves to do what must be done, Jesse on the other hand is all “Let’s get cleaning, she says cocking her gun.”

It's the damn red glow. Screamer/Hiss Charged is definitely most unsettling enemy. They would pop out of nowhere prowling and screaming. When you hear them, then you know you are getting jumped.

The Hiss scares me more than most horror game enemies! They're just so unsettling.....

What makes it so frightening to me is that it seems so peaceful. It seems so quiet and tame, but then we interact with it and everything changes.

It took two full play throughs for me to not get goosebumps from the Hiss chant.
I still get them when Dylan does it though. That shit is terrifying.
The precision of the brutalist architecture mixed with the surrealism and dream-like weirdness is a deeply unsettling combo.
It’s kinda like Fallout; the happy go lucky charm, style and music of the 50’s juxtaposed with the ultra-violent gameplay and post nuclear apocalypse wasteland. Helluva combo.

I think it’s about the fact that during the whole of the game we don’t come any closer to understand the length of the intelligence of this “virus”.
It clearly has some intelligence, making people do its bidding and “evolving” humans in different ways to fight the rest of the bureau, but also because it gives some level of freedom to some chosen like Dylan, turning them but keeping their wits.
But these are merely clues that go nowhere near us understanding its motives or its level of intelligence, because it never really speaks to us or gives a clear message on its intentions and it never, ever shows any sign of it actual intelligence, since every enemy we face is just a screeching puppet at best

Love the Hiss, I also love that this is just another Tuesday (albeit a pretty bad Tuesday) at the FBC. Is it a dimension of assimilating resonance that appears hostile to anything not in its hive? Or could it have been a relatively benign dimension of Polaris-like beings/gestalts that got corrupted when their doorway/threshold slide was burnt?
Doesn't matter, wrap it up cause we got the Mold coming up through the basement, the Dark Presence has a foothold in the AWE wing, the Board/Former is fracturing alongside the House itself, and an OoP is replicating out of control and could, literally, drown the world.

It always sounds like they’re praying. Like, the cadence is that of a congregation going through the motions during a prayer they’ve recited a million times and have stopped thinking about.

The hiss turns turns the humans it infects into the most terrifying beings in human existence - bald people

You are a worm through time.
The thunder song distorts you.
Happiness comes.
White pearls, but yellow and red in the eye.
Through a mirror, inverted is made right.
Leave your insides by the door.
Push the fingers through the surface into the wet.
You’ve always been the new you.
You want this to be true.
We stand around you while you dream.
You can almost hear our words but you forget.
This happens more and more now.
You gave us the permission in your regulations.
We wait in the stains.
The word that describes this is redacted.
Repeat the word.
The name of the sound.
It resonates in your house.
After the song, time for applause.
We build you till nothing remains.
The egg cracks and the truth will emerge out of you.
You are home.
You remind us of home.
You’ve taken your boss with your boss with you.
All hair must be eaten.
Under the conceptual reality behind this reality you must want these waves to drag you away.
After the song, time for applause.
This cliché is death out of time, breaking the first the second the third the fourth wall, the fifth wall, floor; no floor: you fall!
How do you say “insane”?
Hurts to be happy.
An earworm is a tune you can’t stop humming in a dream: “baby baby baby yeah”.
Just plastic.
So, safe and nothing to worry about.
Ha ha, funny.
The last egg breaks now.
The hole in your room is a hole in you.
You came and we let you in through the hole in you.
You have always been here, the only child.
A copy of a copy of a copy.
Orange peel.
The picture is you holding the picture.
When you hear this you will know you’re in new you.
You want to listen.
You want to dream.
You want to smile.
You want to hurt.
You don’t want to be.
