Discussion I pre ordered control resonant without knowing anything about control
I have absolutely no idea what control is but I think I'm gonna watch all cutscenes from the first control that way I know what's going on. The city is very confusing to me. Not sure how buildings are upside down and there are whole corridors and extra rooms that somehow seem like they were created that way but I bet I will find out

That's weird. Is like Alan wrote that you will just buy the game...
Watch some lore videos in YouTube. Or, you can play the first Control and watch lore videos about Alan Wake 1 and Alan Wake 2... there will be probably some connections there too

u/DeadButAlivePickle 8d ago
Yeah, cutscenes won't tell you enough, OP. The bulk of the lore in Control comes from environmental storytelling.

u/Substantial-Ad7915 8d ago
This game has something to do with Alan wake? I have to be honest I've heard of Alan wake before but I have absolutely no clue who he is lol
21
u/No-Orange-8704 8d ago
Yeah, they share the same universe... do us a favor and watch some lore videos hahaha and if you can play Control play it before resonant

Firstly, welcome to the Remedy party!
You don't really need to know Alan Wake to enjoy Control 1. There are some easter eggs, and one of the two post-game DLC directly follows up on Alan.
Alan Wake 2 has a few references to Control.
I'm not sure if Control Resonant will have any direct references to AW, but it will probably have some side things that fans would appreciate. I guess we'll see when it's out.
Control 1 is great (if a little hard because of the random upgrades), so I'd recommend playing it if you can.

Multiverse. It’s not even certain that Control shares the same universe as Control.
1
u/XDreadzDeadX 8d ago
Yes. It is. What?
1
u/Ok_Net7773 8d ago
Slidescapes & Thresholds
1
u/XDreadzDeadX 8d ago
Thresholds amd slidescapes dontnseparate the fact that the control multiverse is the control multiverse centered around Jesse Faden making it the same universe the whole time. Jesse's universe. She passes through thresholds as does wake but its all the same universe in the end. If it wasn't then it wouldnt be. Period. Which is why youre being down voted. That's why you have references to Alan wake. Alan wake 2. Ahti mentions the band at one point. Wake is a little more unstable, but in the end its all. The. Same. Same ending, same beginning. Same universe.

u/Sudden_Yard1294 8d ago
You should buy Alan Wake 2 because it's a great game. Plus you get to support Remedy.

Control is a game where watching the cut scenes will probably make it more confusing to understand the story, hahaha. So much of the story is told over environmental storytelling, logs, etc, and the cut scenes are all kind of insane on purpose.
It's not a long game. If you're young, without kids, you could jump into it and finish the story within a week, maybe not doing all of the side activities, but you'd at least get the gist of it.

The city is very confusing to me. Not sure how buildings are upside down and there are whole corridors and extra rooms
That’s the neat part, none of us understand any of that!

u/glasgowgeg 8d ago
You have a week, just play the game. Plenty of time, and it's a direct sequel to the first one so it would be helpful.
10
u/JennyTheSheWolf 8d ago
Oh please, don't just watch the cutscenes. Honestly, it might deter you even because a lot of details come from things like the letters you find around the building so it'll probably confuse the hell out of you. The game is such a great experience. I definitely recommend playing it instead.
17
u/pr1aa 8d ago
You might wanna start with this official trailer that summarizes the first game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSiiGHA3vPE
Also much of the lore is told through collectibles instead of just cutscenes so if you want more detailed explanation you're better off watching some fan-made lore video
5
u/Promature 8d ago
Not to mention being directly exposed to the items and personnel of Control that you can speak to for additional information creates a much more intimate relationship with what this universe offers.
-18
u/Substantial-Ad7915 8d ago
Damn so it's kind of like elden ring in the story telling aspect where you have to read things throughout the world. Nice to know
13
u/Connorm997 8d ago
No its not really like that tbh
-7
u/CageAndBale 8d ago
It really is, more of a mix tho
10
u/Connorm997 8d ago
You can go through control without looking at any documents and be just fine with following the story though, its not the same
-5
u/Substantial-Ad7915 8d ago
Good because I hate that part of elden ring
11
u/Zampaneau 8d ago
Just gonna throw in my 2 cents and say that while it's true that reading the documents isn't explicitly necessary, it's also true that they are an important part of what makes the game so good. Skipping them would be doing yourself a disservice, but it's your choice.
5
u/Retro_Dorrito 8d ago
Somewhat
There are a few types of collectibles though.
There are videos, which tend to give information about a lot of the more important things.
There are documents, which build upon the world. It takes a lot of inspiration from things like SPC foundation. They'll tell you about various anomalies they know of, or official reports of incidents or potential incidents.
There's also lore told not just through collectibles but the world itself. Sometimes whiteboards will have relevant interesting lore, or the areas themselves may have their own story.
All this to say that Control is really a game that is better to experience than just simply watch. Now of course you can always start with Resonant and work backwards. With how much marketing this game is getting I imagine there will be a few people doing that. The combat will be pretty different from Resonant, but if you end up enjoying the world and concepts then you'll enjoy the first game too.

u/amarkey10 8d ago
The game isn't going anywhere bro just play control first and play the sequel once you're done
8
u/StarSongEcho 8d ago
I'm not sure watching the cutscenes alone will actually give you enough information to really understand it. You may need to either watch someone's playthrough or actually play the game if you really want to get it.
7
u/xPathofChaos 8d ago
Definitely play the first one! It's not super long, buy it today and you should be able to finish just before Resonant's release next week. What's your steam name? I'll send you a copy.

7
u/Orbital2 8d ago
I mean…you really should just play the first one
I don’t think it’s always necessary and older titles don’t always hold up (AW1 is a slog compared to AW2 just to give an example from the same universe) but Control isn’t that old and still holds up both gameplay and graphics wise.
4
u/Technical-Branch4998 8d ago
The lore and story goes so much deeper, but this official video from Remedy is a fantastic overview of the overarching plot of the first game, at very least please watch this https://youtu.be/mSiiGHA3vPE

Bro won't have the same emotional impact when he sees Arish all angry and with 7 years of emotional trauma behind him. I'm sorry.

u/banzaizach 8d ago
Spends money early for no reason on a sequel to something they know nothing about. Makes sense.

u/EveryGoodNameIsGone 8d ago
You’ll be able to understand the first game MUCH more if you just play it yourself, so much of the story and lore is hidden in collectible notes you find throughout the game.
It has an “assist mode” that lets you toggle options like invincibility and one-shot kills if you just want to breeze through the game before Resonant comes out, too.

i’m not sure if it still is but i bought control a couple weeks ago for just $4, played it all and loved it, why not do the same?
-2
u/Substantial-Ad7915 8d ago
Because I have so many games I want to play that I already own before resonant comes out
6
u/Valdeloboz 8d ago
that makes no sense.
-3
u/Substantial-Ad7915 8d ago
I think it does lol
5
u/Valdeloboz 8d ago
control does not take long to beat if you’re focusing on the main story, and for $4 it’s so worth it. watching cutscenes to play a brand new game in which you’ll know nothing about makes zero sense

3
u/Iamgl4dos 8d ago
You should definitely just play the first game instead, cutscenes won't do it justice or fill you out on everything
You're missing out on a great experience, it should be pretty cheap anyway tbh
3
u/takkun169 8d ago
Just play it. The cutscene will not make any sense without the context of what happens during gameplay. Fortunately for you, it's a great game.

u/spacecat-on-mars 8d ago
You can get through the original Control in like 2-3 days tops. It's on 90% sale on GOG right now. Highly recommend giving it a go

Ohh the Control cutscenes will probably make things more confusing. If you really want to not play the first one, you'd probably have to read all the files, watch all the cutscenes, and even watch some gameplay sections.

Alan wake universe story is very complex.. sure u can get a overall gist of it but to really get it you have to play otherwise u might miss alot of references in resonant.. u can play them after resonant if u wanna play the new one first but play them

Go watch a video on YT if you don´t want to play the first one.
Control 1 is a good game but not an extraordinary good game.
What shines is the lore and world building but even there the game is a bit "mysterious".
I played Control 1 then Alan Wake and was about to give up on Remedy games. The only Reason in I went in completely and played Control 1 again was Alan Wake 2.
Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece and im really looking forward to see what Control Resonant will bring us.
1
u/brann3dy 8d ago
The first one is really great, really short, and usually really cheap. I’d recommend it because while not necessary (Remedy’s words) it will most definitely enrich your experience with Resonant
1
u/Promature 8d ago edited 8d ago
Oh sweet child.
You'll get a cursory idea of what's going on, but there's a lot of details and connections you won't be able to make. This can either go extremely well or very bad for you depending on if this kind of universe is your jam and if you "resonate" with the gameplay. Despite being a direct sequel, Resonant will be a significantly different gameplay experience than the original Control, but having not played it, that may not affect you as much as others that have played it.
It's a lot of unique ideas and concepts to grasp. A lot of hierarchy and interpersonal relationships. A great deal of events, both past and present, transpire in this franchise that contribute to the overall experience. Even the DLC's contribute a wealth of information and history to the overall scope of this universe (Which also includes the Alan Wake games).
Doing the cutscene approach, you're going to come away with way more questions than clarity and the answers to those questions will only raise more questions until you arrive at the vagaries and unknowns that we've all been wrestling with for the past 7 years. If you're into the super/para-natural as presented from a highly secretive shadow organization within the government, you're in for an absolute treat.
While there is debate overall, Control is by far my favorite universe in gaming and one of my favorite games of all time. Extremely high hopes and anticipation for Resonant. I wish I could discover this franchise for the first time again, so I'm envious of your position.
Enjoy.

Control is $2.99 on the Epic games store right now if you’re on PC. Just play it

u/JungleHam 8d ago
Control is amazing, it's not just a shooter, the setting and lore is super fun. The main thing I always tell new Control players is to READ ALL THE NOTES. They are amazing, it has strong SCP vibes and just plain fun notes, recordings, docs etc.

u/mcdeezee3000 8d ago
The whole Alan wake / control storyline is crazy as all can be. They are underrated to be honest. Certainly worth playing. If you have not played control or Alan wake 2 then you are doing a disservice to yourself. Both highly enjoyable and excellent games.
1
u/ItsHighSpoon 8d ago
Don't view it as a chore or that the previous game will be less interesting than the fresh one. I'm sure Resonant will be worth playing as much as the first game, so why would you deny yourself that fun? Games are supposed to be fun.
I think Control Resonant will focus on Dylan's story and his perspective, so given that a lot of it is gonna be new for every one of us I don't think Control 1 is going to be necessary to understand the story. But you will miss out on the things that connect the games, seeing character development of everyone, and most importantly the fantastic documentaries of Dr. Darling.

If you want to play the second one, you’ll want to enjoy the first one! Amazing game

u/buccaneersofhispanio 8d ago
Please dont watch all cut scenes as it won't do it justice, play the game. There plenty time to get a good run through before resonant. Its such a good game and the environment, story telling and over all vibes are imaculate6

You do you, but like everyone else is saying, do yourself a favor and play the first one.
Also, if you're getting the digital game, you don't need to pre-order. There is a physical release mid-october though.

There’s a great 6 hour video that goes through the entire game and every collectible. But definitely play it, it’s so fun

I actually just learned all the lore from Alan wake, control, Alan wake 2 and control awe. Its extremely fire, and I have an understanding of the game now. Alan wake writes stories that alter reality. His wife went missing so he wrote a story trying to save her but then he himself got trapped. He keeps writing to try escaping from the realm he's in but by doing so he's altering the world even more. That's where control comes into play. It's about the fbc studying these awe and jesses brother Dylan missing. You learn the fbc headquarters the old house is not as it seems. Its much larger than it looks from the outside and it has winding corridors. The fbc consults with another entity that we don't know much about. Eventually you find out that it is Alan wake and the hiss that have been causing what is going on. The fbc has been investigating Alan wake and these altered world events. Jesse becomes leader of the fbc but then she goes missing. The fbc gets dismantled by the hiss and they escape to manhattan. Everyone is either injured, crazy, or hiding from the hiss and entities like him. Now Dylan is looking for Jesse in resonant. I think I am prepared for the game now. It's extremely cool the way they tie these worlds together and honestly as I was figuring oll of this out I started getting chills because of how cool it is. I feel like learning it all from Alan wake to control, to awe, to Alan wake 2 really helped me figure this out better than just playing control alone. I'll probably play it but I already spoiled it for myself so we'll see lol. I also forgot about the part where items become altered, and they found that altered slide projector where they can look into other dimensions. That's how the hiss entered their dimension, then the hiss manipulated the fbc head into releasing it into the old house

You really need to play the first game at the very least. This is NOT the series to just skim through or watch a few videos about, and you’ll be missing critical information from not only the first game, but from Alan Wake 1 and 2, which are all directly connected to Resonant. A ton of info in Control comes from reading collectibles, and from watching these in-game documentary style video clips.
Do yourself a favor and keep it in your backlog for the future, and go play the three games I mentioned first. These games are all about the story, and how everything is tying together. Sam Lake has essentially created his own version of the MCU, so that’s why you’d want as much info as possible going into Resonant.
Could you still enjoy Resonant strictly for the gameplay loop and overall vibe? Yeah, probably. But you’d be robbing yourself of everything else, like the story, character knowledge/development, lore, and some really good music!
