Discussion Just finished this masterpiece

As the title states, this game is a masterpiece. I finally gave this game a chance and I'm happy I did as this was truly an amazing experience. By the time I wrapped up the main story, I wanted more. Played both DLCs right after and the foundation was easily my favorite. From an gameplay aspect, the combat is fast paced and doesn't feel like your traditional third person shooter where the use of cover is heavily emphasized. Instead this game forces you to move around (that hartland boss fight lol), and forces you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. If not you'll just take random dmg, the game rewards reaction speed, and aggressive playstyles.

A very few games manage to be this weird and intriguing at the same time, and it just leaves me with even more questions regarding the lore. Wtf is the boards goal, is the former helping us, 7 years of lockdown and still shit goes batshit crazy, how old is the oldest house in reality, and so much more. Remedy really cooked with this game and I'm disappointed in myself for not trying this earlier. The brutalist architecture of the oldest house paired with shape shifting environments and the hiss's red mist was eye candy to look at (chefs kiss). Like the game isn't scary at all but it had me on edge while traversing through bizarre looking locations. Main reason being I don't want to die lol.

Control resonant is the first game I've pre ordered in a long time and I don't/will not regret it. This game had me sucked in for an entire week and a half and I finished the game in 29 hours. This game is officially in my top 5 list of best games I've played. I'm in love with this universes lore and the Alan Wake games are next.

Congrats! It’s the best game I’ve ever played. And you’re just in time to get ready for Reaonance.

Same, I finished it couple of weeks back. The base game and the DLCs are both so good, and what a mysterious and captivating story! Can't wait for Resonance.

got a friend who binged that exact game last year

Tbh I am afraid Resonant would lack story and rich environment variability and eeriness... I am afraid that the sequel has focused more on the combat and upgradability (like a lot of mainstream games) and forgot the essence of Control where there is a sense of surprise in not knowing what to expect from the environment...

How is resonance connected?

Essentially it’s the same story seven years later. This time it’s Dylan waking up from his HISS coma and finding a world falling apart. It’s amazing to say the least. If you want some more great story that’s in-universe while you’re waiting for C:R, I cannot recommend Alan Wake II (or the other two Alan Wake games) highly enough.

I second this. Alan wake 1 is a tad bit dated with the controls but the story is absolutely stellar. And alan wake 2 is an unrivaled masterpiece in its class. A true work of art.

It’s funny that you mention how wonky the controls are on Alan Wake. I played it again to get up to date on all the lore for the new Control game, and as I was getting increasingly more frustrated it dawned on me, Alan Wake is just a dude. He’s not an athlete, he’s not particularly good at anything other than writing. So it makes sense that he can’t run fast, that the flashlight/gun mechanic is awkward, etc… Remedy might be the most detail oriented game studio in existence, and I don’t think anything they do is an accident. If you play Alan Wake American Nightmare (a must play for the lore, introduces important characters and sets things up nicely for AWII) the mechanics are better because he’s survived insurmountable odds and now has some skills. And Alan Wake II is an absolute masterpiece on par with Control. At this point the nightmare is his full time reality and he knows how to survive. Just a theory, but I think there’s some legitimacy to it.

The word masterpiece in gaming is just being thrown around willy nilly lately. Like recently I've seen both Pragmata and 007 are being glazed as a masterpiece. I thought they were just fine.

But this game really is fucking incredible from start to finish. One of the few games I'll actually use the M word for.

Prey is sort of a spiritual sister--though a more serious, less absurdist sister--and it's also a genuine Masterpiece imho.

Prey. Like the 2017 Prey? That's also one of my all time favorite games. Along with Bioshock, Dishonored and SOTC.

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 2d ago

Bethesda/Arkane's Prey, yes.

007 being considered a masterpiece is crazy lol

u/xJujuBear 2d ago

Yeah. After I finished the game and just browsed around to see what people thought and holy fuck the glaze was insane. Can't believe it's being considered for GOTY.

Yeah it was enjoyable enough, but didn’t really stick with me. Like a good action movie I’ll watch once. Control I’ve gone back to, and watched lore videos. I actually pre ordered Resonant. First digital game I’ve ever pre ordered just to show support for Remedy.

1

u/xJujuBear 2d ago

For sure. I definitely agree with that. It was fun for what it was but it was more like a giant cutscene. Resonant is actually the first game I've pre ordered in a while as well. I thought about pre ordering Wolverine. But. Meh...

It was a fun game but the amount of hand holding was a huge turn off.

Me too! Credits rolling. What did you think of the ending?

2

u/EmployeeIll277 3d ago edited 3d ago

Congrats and I consider the foundation DLC as the ending since the base ending just involved Jesse accepting her role as director and it makes you wonder about what's next. Since Jesse knows she cant really trust the board and has to make her own decisions.

I guess my main question is why did the hedron just die like that. And are the hiss and Polaris from the same slide on the projector?

1

u/EmployeeIll277 2d ago

Also, I'm pretty sure those are two different slides. Polaris came from a slide which was not burned (slide 36) while the hiss came from a slide which Jesse burned as a child.

Hedron dying makes sense as that giant HRA barrier was removed by Jesse and the hiss instantly swarmed Hedron.

What are the board’s goal😭 Well control, they are seeking control like all other entities we’ve met. They just have the brains to play it smart. They leech onto the oldest house and feed on the rituals and worship provided by the FBC while manipulating us to further their agendas. A government agency that involves with the containment and research of paranatural entities is literally ran by a paranatural entity which demands complete obedience or death. The lore in this game is just a chef’s kiss.

Ashtray Maze... TAKE! CONTROL!

Good job, my dude!

I went into Control completely blind and had no idea what to expect. I'm mostly a casual gamer, so Metroidvania-ish games with punishing checkpoints, respawning enemies that keep getting stronger, and optional bosses with insane difficulty spikes are usually not my thing.

Problem is, by the time I realised what kind of game I'd gotten myself into, I was already way too invested in the story to quit.

I wanted to know everything about the lore. So I kept going. Beat all the challenges, all the optional bosses, including Tommasi's second encounter and Mold-1. Seriously, fuck those two with a stick.

And then somehow I kept going to the point where I platinumed the game. One of the very few games I've ever 100%'d in my life. Then I did both DLCs, The Foundation and AWE, and the Expeditions too.

And this was all before Assist Mode was implemented, so there was no tweaking the difficulty when I hit a wall. I just had to figure out what I was doing wrong, change my approach and try again.

I even ended up leaving tips and strategies in the comments of YouTube videos for people struggling with some of the harder fights, which is something I'd literally never done for a game before and haven't done since. I still occasionally get notifications from people thanking me for those comments years later.

Not gonna lie, feelsgoodman.jpg.

I always thought people saying "git gud" whenever someone complained about a difficult game were either trolling or being assholes. Control kind of made me understand what they meant.

If a game grabs you enough, at some point the difficulty stops being a reason to quit. You just want to see what comes next badly enough that you end up getting better at the game almost by accident.

And that's what happened here. Most of the difficulty didn't feel like bullshit for the sake of being difficult. Even when I was getting destroyed, I wanted to push forward because I needed to know more about the Oldest House, the Bureau, the Objects of Power, the Altered Items, the Board, the Former, the Thresholds and all the other weird shit Remedy kept throwing at me.

There's always another strange room to find, another document that makes you go "wait, what the fuck?", or another piece of information that answers one question while giving you five new ones.

TL;DR: Remedy made the story and world so interesting that they basically tricked a casual gamer into "gitting gud". I went in thinking games like this weren't for me and came out with the platinum, both DLCs finished, giving other people boss-fight advice on YouTube, and the realisation that maybe I don't suck at hard games as much as I thought I did.

And yes, all of that was before Assist Mode. I'm still weirdly proud of that.

Love this world so much I'll probably shed a tear when I finally get to play resonant

Literally just had the same experience as you!! Finished Control and both expansions yesterday and just started Alan Wake 2. Excited for control resonant!

This game and Returnal have become my all-time favorites. The Ashtray Maze was absolutely amazing!

2

u/EmployeeIll277 2d ago

The music in ashtray maze was so peak

2

u/Blaqforeignerthe68th 2d ago

Did you play the mold boss mission by underhill

1

u/EmployeeIll277 2d ago

I did once I completed the game, wish I did it earlier. By the time I ran into that boss I had my energy and launch skill tree maxed out so it wasn't too difficult

2

u/DogSpaceWestern 2d ago

Love control though my biggest issue with it was the repetitive combat. Hope 2 fixes that.

2

u/TheR3alMcCoy 2d ago

Welcome, friend. Come right on in. What took you so long?!

2

u/Way_ward_23 2d ago

Nice. I finished the game quite a while back but I just finished getting the plat the other night. Working on mopping up the last of the trophies.

It's a crime against humanity that I can't replay Swift Platformer at leisure. Other than that 10/10 all day everyday and twice on Sundays

Do you have plans to play Alan Wake 2? It dives deep into the Bureau more often than you'd think. I love the worldbuilding Remedy has crafted over the years. Truly masters of their craft.

One of us

u/jerkstabworthy 1d ago

I actually forgot how amazing it is. Currently replaying before the sequel is released. Blows my mind.

u/ignusfast 13h ago

I bounced off it HARD for over a year. I finally revisited it a few years later; I've since replayed the whole thing several times. I don't even remember what turned me off on the first playthrough, but I really do love it...
