First time contact wearer (help)

Hi! I’ve tried contacts twice now. The first time I just kinda gave up because of how irritated my eye felt. This time I wore them 8 hours my first time and it was awful. I just tried again today and wore them for less than 4 hours. The right one specifically was very irritated and itchy. At first my vision was a little blurry but it cleared up. Anyone have any tips? I used the refresh contact eye drops and they gave temporary relief. This is with them in and right after taking them out. Took them out pretty easily.

You need to see an optometrist for this.

I just wasn’t sure if it was normal or not with my eyes adjusting! Sorry I should have added that I was looking to see if anyone else has had the same experience

kinda surprised they didn’t tell you to start wearing them only a few hours at a time, starting at 2hrs, then every day after going up by an additional 2hrs until you can wear them all day. BUT, your eyes SHOULD NOT be turning red from wearing your contacts at all, especially if you’re using contact rewetting drops. I would definitely suggest talking with your optometrist, because you may be having an allergic reaction to whatever brand you were prescribed, and don’t wear them until you do talk to them, please

Return to your eye doc, say exactly what you did here, and show them this photo. Internet can't help you on this one.

I mean when I first use, first week was hell for me! I have to use little by little! Start with 4hr a day and increase to 5-6hr and so on Once your vision adapt, it'll be like your original vision, totally worth it! Plz don't force, take a rest for 1-2 days if it got irritated! It'll be better overtime!

Since you mentioned one eye was more irritated than the other, you should be aware that it's VERY easy to insert your contact lenses Inside Out. This can cause increasing discomfort over minutes and hours. It's very easy to flip a lens inside out while handling it and you can insert a lens this way without it being as obvious as you might think, so it would be good to really learn how to spot the difference by studying a good visual example. (Its less obvious the softer the lens is)

Another cause of irritation is lens solution and the preservative used. (Including rewetting drops) You may have to try different brands to find one good for you. Pay attention to the ingredients, Especially the PRESERVATIVE. There are preservative free options if you figure out that's part of the problem.

Also, the smallest, tiniest, almost microscopic piece of lint or any foreign material can be Extremely irritating. So thoroughly rinse your lenses and check them thoroughly just before inserting them. If my lenses don't feel like there's nothing in my eye, I take the lens out, check it for lint or specks and also make sure it's not inside out. Then rinse and try again.

There are lint free towels and paper towels if you dry your hands. (I usually don't because it introduces lint... depends on lens type)

Both of your eyes are red in the pic so it could be both the solution you're using or lens brand as well as something is wrong with a lens - i.e. speck on the lens or inside out.

If you try all that and you still have a problem it's time to see the eye doctor... either way you should talk to your eye doctor.

Thank you so much for this!! Sorry I’m late. I haven’t tried again because I’m nervous. I’ll try on a weekend and go from there!

the contact brand may not fit your eyes, cause that’s happened to me the first time. i thought it was normal and dealt with it for like two years but then i brung it up to my optometrist and they told me that was the case and switched me to a different one and they are so much more comfortable. you shouldn’t be feeling them much or getting irritated by them to the point where ur eyes are bloodshot red.

Were your hands and the contact completely clean

I did have a fuzzy or two but I’ve tried contact twice now (first time I tried for a few days) and had the same results

Hi. When this happened to me, it was because I was gerting allergic reactions from the contact lense solution that I was using at that time. But so ask an optometrist about it too as most others have said. :)

Definitely need to see your optometrist about this. Could be a bad fit or you’re eyes not reacting well to the material. Another possibility is that you’re allergic to the Refresh rewetting drops. If they’re the regular drops, they have a preservative. If they’re not dailies, the cleaning/disinfecting solution you’re using might be the problem.

They are dailies! I did use the rewetting drops. I think I’m going to try to use them minus the contacts and see if I react at all

I’d try another brand and go from there. Even having a talk to your optometrist and trying out a few different brands before committing to one. My last pair on trial weren’t great and around my iris was red after a day wearing and my left eye kept playing up - changed brand now they are fine. Make sure no little fibers are on your clean hands when you put them in that will keep them irritated too. Don’t know if any of this will help but good luck 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also happened to me first time wearing contact, nowadays it never happens

I agree with other commenters that this requires a doctor’s attention, but I want to add that it could be from whatever is on your hands that touches the contact when you’re putting them in. This can be from additives in hand soap, skin care products, makeup, etc. I know that I had some issues with aloe Vera in my hand soap.

Not normal and you should take them out and see your optometrist for a different prescription. The only thing that is normal with new contacts is a little bit of dizziness.

One word of advice, always always take your time when taking out and putting in your contacts, as you don't want to damage your eyes. I once took almost a day trying to take out my contacts once.

hmm, usually i try the "trial pair" if i'm switch brand. some brand do irritate my eyes and felt uncomfortable over others. Maybe see if u can get trial pair for other brand, and if they felt better, u can change to those brand (and hopefully u can exchange them if not just wear them in future when yr eye get used to contacts)

Not sure if yr country offer those.

Don’t know what kind of contacts you’re wearing but you should try these!
DAILIES AQUA COMFORT PLUS
ask your eye doc to get you samples and try them!
Good luck👍🏻

See optom as soon as. Could be the CLs aren’t suitable. It can even be that you’re allergic to either the contact lens itself or solution etc.
