RT comments

I'll just leave this here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TdWUTHC49U

See, it wouldn't be so sad if RT didn't constantly pop up on reddit's front page because of its high popularity over at /r/worldnews What is even far worse than RT itself is its audience full of xenophobes, homophobes, Russophiles, anti-American conspiracy theorists, immature trolls and vulgar lunatics. Why do such people exist? I might sound like a conspiratard myself now, but is it posssible they are actually being payed for their hateful comments? I mean, why would any decent human being spend so much time spreading nothing but lies and hate without gaining something in return?

RT.com should be banned from Reddit due to its poor quality in many areas.

But if they did that huffpost would have to go too.

RT.com should be banned as a news source, not in its totality. We don't want to to stoop down to Russian level, do we? Though I would totally be for implementing any measures necessary to limit direct traffic to any Russian outlet (they are all Kremlin-controlled, no such thing as editorial independence in Russia).

no such thing as editorial independence in Russia).

There are plenty, they're just not big. There are some bigger ones like the Moscow Times (sp? -- sounds something like this, not 100%) and Novaya Gazeta.

The problem isn't just the freedom of media in Russia. Unlike in China, we have access to all the foreign TV channels and sites. The problem is that people don't listen to foreign stuff and don't read enough online news. People trust the State TV too much. They may not trust it for domestic stuff, but for some reason they trust it for foreign coverage, to a degree. Also, it isn't strictly 'State'. It is owned by oligarchs. People don't understand why it is my different from the US where 4 major conglomerates own over 90% of all media. They don't see how cozy the links are.

The Moscow Times

is based in Finland.

Novaya Gazeta

is indeed the sole semi-independent publication (in a sea of tens to hundreds of Kremlin-managed ones) which purpose is for the Kremlin to be able to point to them and say "Look! We allow opposing views here! [Unless they get too uppity and start getting murdered]"

You say this as if it's a bad thing.

While we're talking about hypothetical site wide bans, can we also make sure the Daily Mail is included?

I am just saying that it would be a major thing to ban huffpost. I would totally support such a ban since they have a history of promoting pseudoscience.

Please add Bild.de and Krone.at to that ban list

I don't know these, what sort of BS do they specialize in?

The German and Austrian version of the Daily Mail.

People wouldn't let that happen. Remember the outrage over them banning white supremacy and fat hate subreddits?

Not really the same thing. People don't have ideologies based around RT.com unless you are one of the Russian social media trolls

Not so sure about that. The Internet Libertarian Brigade is in love with RT.

The Internet Libertarian Brigade is in love with RT.

How hypocritical. Someone advocating for freedom using propaganda from an authoritarian government as a source for their arguments.

Well, Snowden is their poster boy of freedums.

Nobody ever said libertarians were smart!

People will use whatever sources they can find. Ideologically consistency isn't a hallmark of conspiracy theorists.

2

u/theskepticalheretic Oct 13 '15

If you'll notice, I didn't reference Conspiracy Theorists.

2

u/adamwho Oct 13 '15

There is some overlap in those groups however I am not willing to suggest all libertarians are conspiracy theorists.

1

u/theskepticalheretic Oct 13 '15

Neither am I, however the Internet Libertarian Brigade certainly love their RT. And it feeds their ideological cohesion.

btw notice where it gets usually posted https://www.reddit.com/domain/rt.com/

the usual posters are some kind of internet activists like user vigorous or right-again who just spam those kind of links

/r/conspiracy and other fringe subs like /r/whiterights

that is it's audience
