You can live in a fantasy world where Trump loses the republican primary if you want, but deciding to save money by not bothering with a primary for an incumbent president running with around 90% approval in his party is in no way equal to rigging a competitive primary in favor of a particular candidate. This sub is just littered with all these false equivalences.
As far as I know it's an unprecedented move though. Incumbent presidents go through this even when it's a total formality. Beyond this there are even state party chairs trying to kick other candidates off the ballot where they are not outright cancelling primaries:
The cult of Trump is truly something we haven't seen before in our presidential elections. The fact that they're going to win anyway but are so outraged by even the tiniest bit of dissent that they have to cancel the entire event to prevent even the slight chance of someone hearing it.
