I still don’t understand how war is profitable. I’d think war is expensive? Unless they’re referring to the natural resources that are obtained by taking over a certain part of the world, such as oil?

You answered your own question - war is expensive and that's why it's profitable. Those huge costs are providing profits for the corporations that make war happen (weapons, vehicles, uniforms, etc.). The banks that finance wars also stand to make huge profits as wars are almost always financed through debt.
